1968 lior Clas m H.S., is of Bellmore, New York Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. —John Donne Mr. Raymond Weaver Mr. Weaver came to Mepham when the school opened in 1937. Before he came here, he taught at Springs, a 'small place near East Hampton. Prior to his profession as a counselor, he was a social studies teacher; and at times, he taught general science and other topics. He became a guidance counselor in 1958. He was the first Mepham debate coach, and he was also a rifle coach. He was chosen as a delegate to represent the teachers in the New York State Teachers’ Association. He is a member of the governing body, which is a part of the retirement system. We are grateful to Mr. Weaver for his contribution to Mepham, and he will be missed by all. 13 Dedication Kenneth Hunte is probably the most able and experienced coach in Nassau County, a fact he has proven as leader of Mepham's wrestling and soccer teams. He graduated from Mepham in 1947 and then entered Syracuse University; where in 1949 and 1950, he won the Eastern Intercollegiate Championship and the trophy for most valuable wrestler. He also played varsity lacross. Coach Hunte was second in both the National Intercollegiate Tournament and the National A.A.U. He graduated with a BA in education in January 1952 and went on to receive an MA degree from Syracuse in 1954. Coach Hunte taught fifth grade at Winthrop Avenue School from 1952-1954. In 1954, he moved to District Three and became the first coach and teacher at Jerusalem Avenue Junior High School. He later came to Mepham High in the same capacity. In 1958, he took over when Frank Sprig” Gardner left as wrestling coach. Coach Hunte has made our wrestling team one of the finest and most famous teams in the county and state. With all of this, he managed to serve in the United States Navy. It is therefore with deep gratitude and respect that we, the Class of 1968. dedicate our yearbook, the 1968 Treasure Chest, to Coach Kenneth Hunte. 14 Mr. Kenneth Hunte MR. An element of mature wisdom must temper youthful exuberance to obtain success. As a guide, a willing and helpful friend, the class of 1968 would like to express its thanks to the class advisor. Mr. Arthur McQuillan. Mr. McQuillan’s main work concerns the Senior Planning and Senior Sales Committees, whose meetings he attends, adding occasional suggestions and helpful guidance. He also is a willing chaperone at class functions such as the Harvest Moon Ball and the Senior Prom. In planning activities, Mr. McQuillan serves as a liaison between the Senior Planning Committee and the administration. 38 Gregory Loos. President Douglas Altabef. Feldman Senior Planning The Senior Planning Committee of 1967-68, under the leadership of President Greg Loos and Vice President Doug Altabef. was busy in planning many activities for the school. Senior Planning also helped in financing many of the senior class activities. They voted on senior button designs and beanies, sponsored the allschool dance, the annual Harvest Moon Ball in November. and planned the fourth annual Operation Goodwill during a cheerful pre-Christmas weekend. Senior Planning worked in conjunction with Senior Sales on ideas for the new school mug and the selling of new Mepham sweat shirts. They also conducted elections in junior homerooms for Junior Planning. 40 Senior Sales The Senior Sales Committee under the energetic leadership of President Bill Tortu has been responsible for creating spirited school support for its students. To do this, they were most successful selling refreshments at sports events, and selling senior buttons and beanies. In October the Senior Sales Committee was successful in the sixth annual Magazine Sale. This major fund raising activity of the Senior Class netted a profit of $4,200. Other endeavors included the selling of Mepham sweat shirts and mugs and the selling of hot chocolate during lunch. Senior Sales also took part in collecting money and making favors for the Senior Prom. 41 achenbach, claude—radio club 2,3; track 2,3. alien, wendy—house of representatives 3; pep club 2; fna 2; volleyball 2,3,4: jr. classical league 3. alpert, steven—leo club 4; skull and bones 2,3,4; treasure chest 3,4; ski club 4. alpren, lynn—ski club 2,3,4; pep club 2.3; volleyball 2,3,4; basketball 3: gymnastics 3. alschuler, ronald—leo club 4; skull and bones 2,3.4; treasure chest 3,4. Their first activity of the year was the Kick-Off Dance, which was a complete sellout. This was followed by the highly successful Winter Sports Mixer before the Mepham-Calhoun football game. The House then organized the annual Adopt-A-Family for Christmas program. House of Representatives For the first time, the House sponsored the first Mid-Winter Ball. This dance, replacing the traditional Junior Prom, had the discotek as its theme. Along with Kennedy and Calhoun's Student Councils. Mepham sponsored an Invitational Bowl similar to It's Academic”. The House sponsored the annual Scholarship Drive, and also initiated the first class night—a contest between the sophomore, junior and senior classes. The most significant new activity was the carnival-circus, an affair which made use of both gyms. Deserving students are chosen on the basis of leadership—playing an active role in an extra-curricular activity, scholarship—being in the top third of their class, character— being trustworthy and respectful, and service-participating in school functions and organizations. Seniors are inducted in December and May, Juniors in May. Douglas Altabef is this year's president, with James Garber vice president, Steve Kaufman treasurer, and Marian Cohn secretary. Mrs. Urgese is the advisor. ni Throughout the football season, the band contributed to the spectators' enjoyment by precision marching at half time. In addition to home football games, the band marched on Memorial Day. They also entered in the annual state competition. Without fail, Mepham's musical entry had received top ratings. The consis-tantly high quality of the band’s performance this year has been due to the devoted efforts of Mr. Schoales and Mr. Gephardt. 112 Band Officers: S. Epstein, R. Gabel—Librarian, R. The club presented its 1968 play, The Man Who Came to Dinner”, on March 15 and March 16. With the help of publicity chairman Kenny Goodman and program chairman Shelley Duckstein, the play was a great success. Let us not forget that a good part of its success is due to Skull and Bones' advisor Miss Isabel Ramel. Miss Ramel and the Senior Class presented R.U.R.”, as their first production. Skull and Bones has also worked with the music department to put on their musical. In order to become a member of Skull and Bones, a student must work with the dramatics club for 100 hours. They began the year by revising the club constitution. They then went on to perform services for various charities; they worked for the Retarded Children Fund Drive, they collected money for the March of Dimes through a Bread Sale, and they visited both the Belare and A. Holly Patterson Homes for the aged, playing bingo and giving prizes to the residents. A few days before Election Day, the club held a “mock” election for the Nassau County Executive and the New York Constitution. In aiding the community, the members sold flags for a war memorial in Merrick and sold bonds to help support the local chapter of the American Field Service. On a wider scale, the club issued a newsletter to other Interact clubs around the world and collected items for the soldiers in Vietnam. Throughout the year, they hope to keep pace with this formidable record. Schulman. M. Feldman. A. LaVine, D. Kutner. C. Bank. S. Greenberg. S. Goldner. ROW 4: D. Marx. K. Matsil, S. Breslow. C t Y C L U B Under the leadership of president Greg Loos, the Key Club has sponsored many activities. They organized College Night in December, enabling interested high school students to investigate a range of colleges represented by Mepham graduates. They also held a Christmas party for the children in the Cerebral Palsy Center in Roosevelt, and adopted a child in South America. Leo Club A new service club, sponsored by Lions, has been introduced into Mepham this year. It has already performed an admirable number of services under the leadership of its very first president, Bruce Task, and its advisor, Mr. Jerome Post. Members of the Leo Club were on hand at the Winter Sports Mixer and the Harvest Moon Ball, where they helped with refreshments, in the cloak room, and cleaning up. They sold bread for the March of Dimes and AFS bonds for the American Field Service. Leo Club members collected money for the Anna Selver Suburban Chapter of Cancer Care, and participated in Selling Light for Sight . In addition, they distributed fliers for the art sale held by the South East Nassau Guidance Center. Just recently, Leo Club began holding elections for Student of the Month, an idea that became popular in a very short time. Leo Club also attends the Service Home in Bellmore Weekly, a service that is appreciated greatly by all. Mepham High School is proud to have such an ambitious new addition within her walls. 128 The Girls' Service Club, under the leadership of President Margaret Hennessey, and Vice-President Karin Helmke desires to help anyone in the local community who needs aid. Under faculty advisor Mrs. Helen Kelly, the club is active in serving the school and community. The Girls’ Service Club makes many contributions to school activities. Cupcake sales, held twice a year, are used to raise funds for the club, each year Halloween favors are made for the sick children in one of Nassau's many hospitals, a Thanksgiving dinner was supplied to a needy family in the area in November, and in December there was a toy and clothing drive for children in Vietnam. The club also ushers at the Pop Concert and the Senior Prom. More recently, they have adopted a Korean child and hope to continue sponsoring this orphan until he is old enough to care for himself. Girls’ Service Club 129 Future Teachers of America FTA is one of Mepham's service clubs designed to give its members knowledge and experience in the teaching profession. The good and bad points of teaching are carefully examined. Members are required to earn hours for membership by working for one teacher grading papers, making dittos, and doing bulletin boards. Club meetings consist of business, panel discussions, guest speakers, films and teas. Many of the members have been involved in working with mentally disturbed children. Two fall projects were displays for American Education Week and the attendance at an FTA conference at Hofstra University. Planned for the spring are a project for Teacher’s Recognition Day and for seniors, the project of teaching for one day at a neighboring school. This year the club is under the advisement of Mrs. Calitri. Club officers are: President—Sharon Rothstein, Vice-President—Lillianne Sabia, Recording Secretary—Virginia Izzo, Corresponding Secretary—Linda Santos, and Historian-Librarian—Stephanie Singer. Awards are given out at the completion of the school term to those members who have done outstanding work for FTA. 130 The thirty-six members of the Library Club serve the school under the guidance of the school's two librarians, Miss Wilma Cope and Mrs. Mildred Klips. The purpose of this club is to do most of the clerical work of the library. This is to give the librarians more time to help the students and teachers. President Lois Reder and Vice-President Marietta Fuentes help the librarians in keeping the club organized and in interviewing potential members. New members are accepted in the spring of their sophomore year after a six week apprenticeship, an interview with the librarians and the officers of the club, and a written test. As a symbol of the service these girls provide to the school, members of the Library Club receive a key at the end of their junior year, and a Varsity “M letter in the middle of their senior year. American Field Service Club The American Field Service Club, a part of the Bellmore-Merrick chapter of A.F.S., under the leadership of president Donna Keren, helped to promote world understanding. The club brought information concerning foreign exchange programs to the school. The A.F.S. welcomed Rosa Maria Cobos from Bilbao, Spain to Mepham last September. Unfortunately, Rosa hurt her leg and was forced to return home a few months later. At regular meetings, the members viewed films and carried on discussions under their advisor, Mrs. Risberg. 132 Future Nurses of America Secretarial Practice Club ROW 1: M. Collura. J. Mandelion, M. As a group assigned specifically of the Junior Class, the committee had a chance to experience the governing and organizing of an independent program of events in preparation for their Senior year. Steven Kaminshine acted as President for the Junior Planning Committee. With his leadership, the Junior Committee was able to enjoy a rewarding year. 136 World Youth Forum Nurein Etamedor Nurein Etamedor and Russ Feldman From March 3rd to March 24th, Mepham was privileged to host one of the thirty-four delegates to the annual World Youth Forum. Formally under the auspicions of the Herald Tribune, it is now sponsered by W.C.B.S. Television. Mepham’s guest was Nurein Etaneoor from Lagos, Nigeria. While here, he lived with Russ Feldman and his family. Nurein attended numerous Social Studies classes, speaking on topics ranging from civil rights to black magic to the Vietnam war. He also attended a wide variety of other classes from Physics with Miss Lau, Advanced Placement Social Studies with Mr. Wilson to Math with Mr. Walters. Nurein’s great sense of humor and warm personality made him very popular with the student body. While here, he had attended numerous functions including the Skull and Bones play and the Latin Banquet. Before attending Mepham, Nurein attended schools in New Jersey and New York City and travelled to Virginia and Washington, D.C. After his stay, Nurein went on to St. Louis and then to Philadelphia. On April 10, Nurein left for home. Audio-Visual Squad 137 Debate Club 138 Varsity M 139 Ski Club Chess Club luuuir ROW 1: E. Carpentiere. H. Weiss. M. Carpentiere ROW 2: S. Leffler. D. Kaufman. B. The team was first under Coach Frank Sprig Gardner, and is now under the expert and experienced leadership of Coach Kenneth Hunte. Coach Hunte is probably the finest wrestling coach in Nassau County. The team has shaped up into a fine coordinated group of ambitious competitors. The wrestling squad was made up of Al Petermann, who received a high placement in the county tournaments, Kevin Stock, Larry Kalvar, Ronnie Weisel, Vinnie Chionchio, Howie Smolin, Tom Koche, Jim Renton, Dave DeSario, Steve Buczak, and Bob Pinsdorf. In the Massapequa Invitational Christmas Tournament, the matmen finished second with a total of 97 points. The team's final record was four wins and four losses. 148 150 Wrestling Candids 151 ROW 1: T. Paranifo—Manager. R. Daigen. J. Shul-man, L. Lang. T. Roche. R. Uriarte. A. Petermann, R. Pinsdorf. J. The football season may be over for most of the students at Mepham, but the Mepham Pirates, full of fight and determination, promise better things for '68. Our determined gridiron players struggled, though unsuccessfully, but could not defeat the opponents. Returning from last year’s team were familiar faces such as Charlie Mazza, Richard Uriarte—voted most valuable player. Jay Shulman, Larry Lang, Bob Pinsdorf. Al Petermann, and Vinnie Chionchio. This year three key Mepham players were injured. In the October 7th game against Hewlett. Jeff Kantor, quarterback, and end Charlie Mazza were clipped, keeping them sidelined. At the end of the second quarter, fullback Vinnie Chionchio was also injured. Hewlett then scored and went on to win the game 40-12. Other scores of the season were: Levittown Memorial 38 and Mepham 18, Long Beach 28 and Mepham 13, and Calhoun 37 to Mepham’s 7. Coach Zuckerman has pointed out that a lack of depth and a lack of experience have been great problems, along with the injuries to players. The Pirates of 1968 will be a better ball team because of their experience in 1967. Our football team, after an unsuccessful year, are more than determined to make amends for the following football season. ROW 3: Coach Fitz. S. Ludlow—Manager P. Torone —Manager, J. The team, under Coach Douglas Gerek, has been successful in defeating many opponents. Our starting lineup included seniors Ira Goodleman, who was the team's captain. Frank Spencer, Steve Stillwagon and juniors Alan Maddaleno and Dennis Charney. Richard Moreno and Matt Mazza were used as alternates. One of this years highlights was the Kennedy Festival during the Christmas Vacation. We split the two games, winning one and losing one. After the third quarter, we lost the lead to Mineola and never regained it. The final score was Mineola 83 to Mepham's 75. However, the second game against Bellmore Kennedy was won by the Pirates 72—43. 156 ROW 1: G. Hertel, J. De Carlo, R. Hallem, R. Trachtenberg, K. Piegari, M. Cutino, J. Rummell, E. Goldberg, a. Mepham's greatest effort this season came against Long Beach. Long Beach, rated one of the top teams on the island, was held to a scoreless tie when overtime came. Finally in the second overtime, Long Beach defeated Mepham 1—0.
