Mr. Gerald E. Tarbell, our Assistant Principal, has become one of the outstanding personalities of the district. He attended St. Lawrence University, where he received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. To further his education, he spent several summers studying at the University of Maine, the University of Michigan, and New York University. He came to our school district in the fall of 1953, and taught physics at Mcpham until 1958. In addition to his teaching, Mr. Tarbell found time to serve as advisor of the P.A. Club and Secretary of the Dad’s Club. In 1959 he was named Mcpham’s Assistant Principal. Mr. Tarbell has shown himself to be an efficient administrator with a deep interest in both the activities of Mepham’s students and the problems and needs of high school youth in general. He realizes the importance of future goals to each individual student. Assistant to the Principal Assistant Principal Mr. Gerald Tarbell Mr. Kenneth Rutley After having taught eight years in our mathematics’ department, Mr. Kenneth R. Rutley became Assistant to the Principal this September. Mr. Rutley earned both his Bachelor's degree and Master’s degree at Albany State Teacher’s College; and after attending New York University and Hofstra University, he began teaching at Mepham. He coached the junior varsity baseball teams and varsity and junior bowling teams, among other activities in which he participated. As a result of Mr. Rutley’s interest in administration, he took administration courses while attending Hofstra. There, he received his principal’s certificate, enabling him to assume his present position. 15

The Principal Mr. Herman Tennant Mr. Tennant feels that the most rewarding aspect of his position as Mepham’s principal is watching and measuring the growth and increasing self-reliance of the students as they pass through their high school years. He expresses pride at seeing them take their part as young men and women. Having spent a good many years in the education field, he is well equipped to gauge the progress they are making. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree from Hobart College and his Master’s from New York University, he entered the teaching profession. In 1935 Mr. Tennant became a member of Mepham High School’s first faculty. He left in 1954 to become principal of Merrick Avenue Junior High School, but returned to Mepham four years later to assume his present position. A man who is “interested in people as people” misses the opportunity for close contact with the students that the classroom afforded him. He does, however, derive much satisfaction from his position as principal and takes pride in the contributions and accomplishments of the student body. He also stresses that it is here the students must learn to be a part of a democratic society and to develop the right attitude towards living. Mr. Tennant emphasizes the importance for each individual to respect the talents and accomplishments of others. Mr. Tennant has an inherent faith in the younger generation. He considers most teenagers fine people who have much to contend with and who need an opportunity to demonstrate their ability and maturity. 14
