Searching intelligence, flexibility and imagination are fused by means of an essential love of children to produce this image. Mcpham is fortunate to have on its faculty a person whose attributes personify these ideals. Honesty, kindness, exuberance and understanding are qualities that characterize Mrs. Theresa Hudson. She was never too busy to discuss a student’s problems, or debate world affairs, and for three years this senior class experienced her warm and vibrant personality. Above all, we remember her devotion: to her job; to her students; and to her country. Therefore, with pride and honor, and especially with reverence, we the Senior Class of 1965, dedicate our Treasure Chest to Mrs. Hudson in appreciation of her immeasurable contribution to Wellington C. Mepham High School. 4 Mrs. Theresa Hudson s Capital Appearance—'The Beatles performed for a youthful audience in Washington on the night of February 12. Under this year’s president, Miss Katherine E. Reif, its activities included raising money to operate the schools in Central High School District 3, keeping abreast of new educational developments, and hiring the teaching staff of the district. As a result of a yearly report received by the Board on the upkeep and maintenance of the district’s buildings, Calhoun’s field is being upgraded, and the roofs of three of the schools are being repaired. Briefs are prepared each year to be sent to the New York legislature regarding the financial state of the district. In addition, the Board meets for discussions and lectures on current educational trends. The Public Relations Committee keeps the public informed about Board activities, as the Board is actually only a representative of the people. The members of the Board of Education are dedicated to the improvement of schools in this district. They are actively concerned with every student, and their efforts have earned our greatest thanks and admiration. Board of Education 10 STANDING: Dr. Julius Braun, Mr. Harry Cambell, Mr. Charles Reinhart, Mr. Richard Irwin, Mr. John Martin, Mr. William Klare, SEATED: Mr. Eugene Adams, Miss Katherine Reif, Mr. Edward Lehman. To our Mepham High School Students: It has been a pleasure to serve you as Principal of the District during the past school year. The record shows many fine accomplishments on your part in all phases of educational activity. Your school and your community congratulate you and join you in a sense of pride for a job well done. The work of chief school administrator for Central High School District No. 3 encompasses many duties and responsibilities. Our main concern is that each of you take full advantage, in terms of your ability, of the many varied opportunities that are made available to you. Our Board of Education sets the policy under which this school system operates. This policy is then administered through the central office, the Mepham High School office and the faculty. The fine quality of education that you have received results from the cooperation on the part of all concerned and the degree to which you have applied yourself. Our many scholarship winners are to be congratulated upon demonstrating their use of their ability and talents. Mr. Tennant, Mr. Tarbell, and Mr. Rutley as administrators, as well as your teachers, deserve a great deal of credit for their personal interest in you and your progress. As this Senior Class leaves Mepham High School to pursue higher education, or take its place in our ever-changing world, I extend my very best wishes. Dr. Julius C. Braun Principal of the District District Staff Mr. Ralph K. Alger Supervisor of English Dr. Fredrick H. Stunt Administrative Assistant Mr. Eugene E. Hallcnbcck Administrative Assistant The accomplishments and achievements of Mepham High School have been maintained in the past, as well as the present, with the help of the District StafT. The Staff works diligently to keep the standards of our district high. We, the Senior Class of 1965, express both appreciation for the past accomplishments of our District StafT and confidence in its future plans to help the individual and the school. MR. EVERETT THOMAS Business Education MR. STANLEY TRYBULSKI Language MR ROBERT BAKER Mathematics Education MR. GEORGE L. STAHL Vocational Educational MR. BURTON CADRO Industrial Arts MR. HERBERT SCHOALES Music MR. THEODORE LEVINE District Psychologist MR. NICHOLAS SABETTO Physical Education Heads of Departments 13 The Principal Mr. Herman Tennant Mr. Tennant feels that the most rewarding aspect of his position as Mepham’s principal is watching and measuring the growth and increasing self-reliance of the students as they pass through their high school years. He expresses pride at seeing them take their part as young men and women. Having spent a good many years in the education field, he is well equipped to gauge the progress they are making. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree from Hobart College and his Master’s from New York University, he entered the teaching profession. In 1935 Mr. Tennant became a member of Mepham High School’s first faculty. He left in 1954 to become principal of Merrick Avenue Junior High School, but returned to Mepham four years later to assume his present position. A man who is “interested in people as people” misses the opportunity for close contact with the students that the classroom afforded him. He does, however, derive much satisfaction from his position as principal and takes pride in the contributions and accomplishments of the student body. He also stresses that it is here the students must learn to be a part of a democratic society and to develop the right attitude towards living. Mr. Tennant emphasizes the importance for each individual to respect the talents and accomplishments of others. Mr. Tennant has an inherent faith in the younger generation. He considers most teenagers fine people who have much to contend with and who need an opportunity to demonstrate their ability and maturity. 14 Mr. Gerald E. Tarbell, our Assistant Principal, has become one of the outstanding personalities of the district. He attended St. Lawrence University, where he received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. To further his education, he spent several summers studying at the University of Maine, the University of Michigan, and New York University. He came to our school district in the fall of 1953, and taught physics at Mcpham until 1958. In addition to his teaching, Mr. Tarbell found time to serve as advisor of the P.A. Club and Secretary of the Dad’s Club. In 1959 he was named Mcpham’s Assistant Principal. Mr. Tarbell has shown himself to be an efficient administrator with a deep interest in both the activities of Mepham’s students and the problems and needs of high school youth in general. He realizes the importance of future goals to each individual student. Assistant to the Principal Assistant Principal Mr. Gerald Tarbell Mr. Kenneth Rutley After having taught eight years in our mathematics’ department, Mr. Kenneth R. Rutley became Assistant to the Principal this September. Mr. Rutley earned both his Bachelor's degree and Master’s degree at Albany State Teacher’s College; and after attending New York University and Hofstra University, he began teaching at Mepham. He coached the junior varsity baseball teams and varsity and junior bowling teams, among other activities in which he participated. As a result of Mr. Rutley’s interest in administration, he took administration courses while attending Hofstra. There, he received his principal’s certificate, enabling him to assume his present position. 15 Educational relations make the strongest tie. DiTeodoro Senior Class Advisor The success of this year’s Senior Class is a result of the cooperation between the members of the student body and the administration. This cooperation could never have been achieved without the valuable aid of Mr. Vincent A. DiTeodoro, the senior advisor. As advisor to the Class of 1965, Mr. DiTeodoro’s invaluable counseling and guidance helped to make this year’s class one of the most successful in the history of Mepham. The senior advisor serves as a guide and director of the Senior Planning Committee in its work. The Harvest Moon Ball, Senior Play, Magazine Sale and other Senior Class projects were just a few of the many class functions to which Mr. DiTeodoro contributed unstintingly of his time and effort. For this the Class of 1965 is indebted to Mr. DiTeodoro, and expresses its admiration and gratitude. 30 DANNY NUSSBAUM I Senior Officers PAT GERRATO The achievements and success of the Class of 1965 can be attributed in great part to the initiative, enthusiasm and perseverance of the class officers. Under the leadership of President Daniel Nuss-baum and Vice-President Patricia Gerrato, the Senior Class has demonstrated what can be accomplished through effort, combined boundless spirit and energy. Working with the Senior Planning Committee, the officers aided in the planning and directing of the Harvest Moon Ball, Sadie Hawkins Dance, Senior Prom, Mepham-Calhoun Night, Senior Play, Alumni Dance, Senior Trip, and Student-Faculty games. Credit must also be given to Secretary Audrey Snipes, who was in charge of the minutes and all correspondence, and to the Treasurer Marcia MacLeod, who handled the finances of die Senior Class. To carry on its many activities, the Senior Class is in constant need of funds. The Senior Sales Committee, under Chairman Harvey Yablon and co-chairman Ronnie Edelman, was responsible for raising the money used by the Senior Class for various projects. Assisting the Senior Planning Committee in many of its functions Senior Sales, open to all seniors, was in charge of all the purchasing and selling transactions of the Senior Class. At athletic events, there were always members of the committee present selling hot dogs, soda, candy and programs. The most outstanding and profitable accomplishment, which was a credit to the spirit and initiative of both Senior Sales and the Senior Class, was the magazine sale. Other successful activities of the group included selling senior buttons, mementoes, and tickets to the Senior Play. Through the conscientious work of the members, the Senior Sales Committee has justly earned the gratitude and respect of the Class of 1965 for its unending service to Mepham High School. Composed of two elected representatives from each senior homeroom, and directed by the senior class officers, the Committee determines the class’s policies and programs for the year. Senior Planning proved to be one of the most effective and active student organizations in Mepham. A Majority of One, this year’s play, was planned by the Committee. The Committee also arranged and organized the very profitable Magazine Sale held at the end of October. This year’s Senior Class well passed its quota of $9,000. The Class of 1965 would like to express its thanks to the forty-seven members of the Senior Planning Committee for the fine work they have done in making this year one of both progress and achievement. 33 LESTER ABRAMS: Baseball 2,3,4; Football 4. Its one hundred fifty-three members are divided into different committees. They are: the school affairs committee; the general welfare committee; and a committee which organizes the student of the w'eek display. The committees have sponsored various activities including: the sophomore dance; adopting a family for Christmas; and providing a warm atmosphere for our exchange students. Outstanding assemblies sponsored by the House were the sophomore orientation assembly held at the beginning Lcs Corwin, speaker of the House of the year, and the assembly which took place during National Education Week. The guest speaker at the assembly was Dean Bratton of Adelphi Col-lege. Aside from these activities, bills which voice the opinions of the majority of the students are passed. This year a bill enabling juniors to purchase their senior rings in their junor year was passed. The other officers of the club are: Bonnie Carroll, secretary; Kenny Baer, parliamentarian; and Barbara Levitz, attendance officer. Without the House of Representatives, the many activities successfully sponsored for the benefit of the student body, could not have been possible. One can be admitted on any one of three occasions: at the end of the junior year, in the middle of the senior year, and at the end of the senior year. Any student with at least an 85 average is eligible for membership. Applicants are chosen by an executive board of the faculty, and on the recommendation of the faculty and present members. Those outstanding in character, scholarship, leadership, and service are inducted at the solemn and impressive ceremonies held in December and May. Officers for Honor Society were voted upon on only one occasion, a change from last year when two elections were held. Elected to positions were: Patricia Pavlovich as president, Timothy Balunis as vice president, Marjorie Albert as secretary, and John Johnson as treasurer. One of their spectacular achievements was the formation of a big M for Mepham at the Calhoun-Mepham football game. Aside from the half time entertainment, the band did a splendid job of cheering the team on. The Senior Band consists of eighty-one members with Howard Fisher as band captain, Bob Devereaux as band manager, and Gail Frankenstein as secretary. Competition for membership is stiff, but the end results are well worth it. This was evident in the successful performance given at the winter concert on January 23. A trip to Maynard, Massachusetts took place in March. Here our band members performed in a high school concert. As part of the exchange program the band from the high school in Maynard performed here in May. 122 FIRST ROW: Priorc, Falkowitz, Scher, Yares. SECOND ROW: Tcntas, Cahill, Eycrman, Envin. They have performed at many concerts including the winter concert in January at Mepham. The ensemble is made up of violins, violas, and a single bass. The violinists from this group combined with some of the band members were chosen to accompany the Bye Bye Birdie stars during the spring play in March. The ensemble is hoping for a new addition, a violincel-lo, by next year which should add a final touch to the group. One of the best known musical groups in Mepham is the ever-popular Jolly Rogers. Under the expert direction of Mr. Herbert Shoales and Band Captain Howard Fisher, the all Mepham group admits only outstanding members of the band. The repetoire of the Jolly Rogers includes both stamdard selections and jazz. In addition to performing at dances and school functions, the Jolly Rogers is the main feature at the annual Pop Concert. The group participated in a program with the succcssfid exchange of musical programs with the high school in Maynard, Massachusetts. David Eller—Managing editor The main function of the Buccaneer is to inform the student body of the various activities taking place in Mepham. The success of the Buccaneer could not have been attained without the efforts and co-operation of the editors, staff, and advisor, Mr. Kellner. The editors of the newspaper are: Ricky Altabef, Editor-in-Chief; Nancy Greenberg, News Editor; Ellen Fisher, Assistant News Editor; Michal Bourne, Feature Editor; Les Corwin and Barbara Forrester, Sports Editors; David Eller, Managing Editor; Stewart Brazina, Photographer. Outstanding and worthwhile editorials are the comer stone of the editorial page. Each publication is enriched by the advice and viewpoints of Ricky Altabef. TOP: Interact Edmund Berridge Advisor Until October of 1963, Mephamites were unfamiliar with the term “Interact.” However, everyone at Me-pham soon learned about the club by sharing in the benefits of the efforts of this service organization, which is sponsored by Rotary International. The purpose of Interact, or more properly, the International Youth Action Committee, is to serve Mepham and the community by furthering the ideals of brotherhood and harmony. As one of its activities, Interact conducted a mock presidential election. The members have served at school functions such as dances and athletic events and have done a creditable job in the many community projects and charity works they have attempted. One of the club’s most ambitious projects was the creation of a tutorial program to aid underprivileged children. Only through a core of hard working members and leaders has this been made possible. This is why Interact maintains a high standard which applicants must meet in order to be eligible for membership. Under the leadership of John Nagle, Stuart Rubin, Ricky Altabef, and John Pridans, Interact had a most successful year. The Mepham High School Key Club, now in its thirteenth year of existence, has remained a valuable organization both in the school and in the community. This year the Key Club received the coveted “Parent’s Magazine” award for the fourth time. To add to its many Honors the Key Club has also won the New York State District Achievement Award. Under the guidance of Mr. John C. Coby, Robert Storyk, president; Bruce Jonas, vice-president; John Johnson, secretary; and Stan Jacobson, treasurer; members of Key Club have undertaken many worthwhile projects. Among these projects have been fund raising drives, publishing the Senior and Sophomore guides, adoption of a child from Columbia, and hosting the annual Christmas party at the United Cerebral Palsy Center in Roosevelt. The club has been honored by sending representative, James Fischer, to the District Convention and the International Key Club Convention, held in Dallas, Texas. The Key Club has been, and will continue to be, an asset to Mepham High School and the entire community. Mr. John Coby Advisor Key Club FIRST ROW: Storyk; Jacobson, Jonas, Johnson. International Relations Club Mrs. Hudson Advisor The International Relations Club is an organization which attempts to develop the growth of international understanding. It serves as a forum for the airing of the opinions of foreign affairs of Mepham students. Led by co-ordinator Barbara Levitz and co-chainnan Ricky Altabef and David Eller, this years I.R.C. presented lectures, debates, films and discussions on topics of both national and international interest. Several outstanding programs of the year included informal talks by Annie Stern and a United Nations representative. The group also sponsored a group meeting with the Calhoun I.R.C. gave a tea and discussion period for the five American Field Service foreign students who visited Mepham in February. These special programs, combined with frequent stimulating group discussions, made this year one of the most successful that the Mepham I.R.C. has ever seen. The interest and advice of the group’s advisor, Mrs. Theresa Hudson, was an important factor in the success of the I.R.C. 132 FIRST ROW: Hafner, Sveda, Cristman, Jordan, Hutchinson, Stone. Library Club The Library Club is one of Mepham’s outstanding girls’ service organizations. The members of the club, under the leadership of the two librarians, Miss Wilma Cope and Mrs. Mildred Klips, are always ready and willing to aid any student or faculty member in the library. With Carolyn Crusius as president; Rosemarie Mascola, vice president; Ellen Fisher, recording secretary; and Joan Handler, corresponding secretary, this years Library Club has lived up to its tradition as one of the most efficient organizations in Mepham. The major function of the club is to assist the student body and faculty in the use of the li- brary sources. Among the social activities of the Library Club is a monthly tea and an annual trip. In order to earn a letter, each senior is required to keep her hours up to date and do a certain project. These projects may include the cataloging of short stories, completion of a biography index or the reorganization of the magazine room. Membership to the Library Club opens to sophomore girls every spring. Those interested in becoming members must serve as apprentices for a period of six weeks. During this period they learn how to perform the various tasks undertaken by library members. 134 FIRST ROW: Friedman, Schwartz, Roberts, Greenberg, Welsh. Future Teachers Mepham’s chapter of the Future Teachers of America is named in honor of its founder, Miss Agnes J. Berwind. The goal of the club, as quoted by Miss Runkle, its head advisor, is, “To help the members better appreciate the aims and responsibilities of a teacher through working directly with teachers.” At present, F.T.A. consists of eighty girls with Carol Roberts as president and Nancy Greenberg as vice president. Club membership isn’t open to boys as yet, but this is feasible in the near future. Programs planned by the F.T.A., under the direc- tion of the program chairman, consist of group panel discussions with guest speakers such as Mr. Rutley, assistant to the principal, and Mrs. Tracten-berg, the reading specialist. Additional activities are trips to unversities and other schools. These trips are designed to give members a wider scope of opportunities in the teaching profession. The requirements for membership in F.T.A. are: willingness to fulfill twelve hours of work after school per semester, attendance at two program planning committee meetings, and the desire to become a teacher. of America FIRST ROW, SEATED: Kopito, Margolies, Handler, Buffa, Cotter, Harrison. The Art Club, now in its third year, has provided a valuable insight to art for the students of Mepham. The Art Club’s goal is aimed at stimulating the appreciation and understanding of art contributed by the student body. Members gain knowledge of many forms of art. The members plan trips to various museums, including the Met. Guggenheim, and smaller galleries. The informal meetings held by the Art Club give members an opportunity to discuss art and the school's curricula pertaining to art. Students are also given the chance to express their artistic abilities. Under the direction of Mr. Mesoligetes and Mrs. Bavuso, the club works on various projects around the school. These include the office exhibits and various showcases throughout the school. This year, with Jonathan Menche acting as president, Michael Greene as art chairman, and Alice Hornug as secretary, the Art Club has succeeded in instilling the love of art onto the student body. The Green Thumb Club, under the direction of Mrs. Weiner, is a constructive after school activity and a distinct asset to our school. It consists of twenty members, (except in special circumstances when an extra candidate can be voted in by a majority vote of members.) Gabriele Hafner, president for the past two years, conducts business meetings and takes charge of any club activities. The club meets every Wednesday in room 304 where the members work on projects and experiments to gain further knowledge in botany research. The club’s activities are centered around its greenhouse located outside room 304. The club’s main purposes, as quoted from its constitution, are: “To beautify the school, inside and out, by providing flowers and plants; to further our knowledge of botany: and to increase our appreciation of natural beauty.” Trips to greenhouses, the Cutting Arboretum and other outings arc sponsored by the club. Its purpose is to acquaint students with French cultural life, so they may better understand and enjoy the language. Among the many activities of the French Club are the production of French plays, excursions to New York City to view plays by French dramatists, and to learn about French art and food first hand, instead of from a textbook. In short, the French club enriches the study of the French language with actual experience. Mepham’s chapter of the Junior Classical League welcomes all students taking Latin, or those who have completed a course in Latin. The League’s purpose is to encourage an appreciation of the classical cultures, promote an interest in the language, civilization, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome, and to show the extent of classical influence on our culture. One of the most interesting projects of the Junior Classical League was a Roman banquet to celebrate the Roman Saturnalia holiday. In addition, during National Education Week, the club worked to present Latin culture to the school. Nina Kestin and Mark Tager are the consuls, or the heads, of this years League. With the aid of its advisor, Mr. Greenblatt; and president Robert Bandera, the club teachers its members the various details of radiation equipment and radiation. The Math Team allows students to test their mathematical ability against that of other students and against the clock. The club meets weekly under the leadership of Bob Devereaux. At their meetings, the members work on sample problems and prepare themselves for the competition of league meets. They learn to think and reason quickly, making efforts to arrive at the correct answer in the smallest possible amount of time. Club render an important service to the student body by watchful scrutiny and reliable broadcasting A P.A. announcer must know his “stuff” if he is to relay the proper information to the crowds gathered at all Mepham home games and meets. Under the guidance of Mr. Seastedt and Presidency of Stewart Brazina, P.A. members not only patronize the microphone, they must also operate the scoreboard. A member should be available at short notice for announcing scores and be extremely attentive to the game he is announcing. Besides having a good voice, he should be alert and carefully watch all the actions of the game. The P.A. Club is the place to gain the experience needed if you are considering broadcasting in your future. It is also a place for hard work. A member is always on an immediate “alert” for he may be called to announce at any game if the situation warrants it. Members don't complain about the work, since it is both exciting and fun. The services rendered by the Audio Visual Squad arc appreciated by the faculty and student body alike. Each member gives up several study halls a week to aid in the presentation of film strips and slides in the various classrooms. Every Monday morning the squad members receive schedule cards which assigns them to various rooms. During these assigned periods they set up equipment or run films. Persons who are sincerely interested in handling projection equipment receive great enjoyment and satisfaction which comes from serving this organization. FIRST ROW: Christmann, Brisotti, Coleman. Besides these debates, the Debate Club also participated in the Student Congress, the Original Oratory Contest, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Dramatic Interpretation. Membership into the Mepham chapter of DECA, Distributive Education Clubs of America, is open to any student enrolled in the distribution classes. This club attempts to develop future leaders for marketing and distribution. Among the many DECA projects is a county and state wide contest which judges students in such areas as job interviews, sales demonstration, and ad layout and copies. In addition to sending students to participate in this contest, members of DECA operate the school store. The club is sponsored by Mr. Marlborough. Libby Greenberg is the president, Mary Ann Klimkowski, Leonard Cacioppo, and Jeanne Cannon arc vice presidents, Nanci Lou Testa is secretary, Joseph Anzalone is treasurer, Barbara Michel is parliamentarian, and Jack Gennamo is historian. DECA is an educational and worthwhile organization that provides good experiences for its members. TOP ROW: Mandel, Golub, Simms, Komarov, Wiess, Gurian, Blum, Tobiias, Rielly, Le Pore, Mr. McQuillan. BOTTOM ROW: Marks, Morrison, Wand, Yares Witlen, Schwartz, Blinder, Katcher, Sehman. Debate Club 145 SEATED: Kestin, Carroll, Wand, Laskin, Roberts, Siebert. STANDING: Klein, Katcher, Morrison, Colasuano, Yarris, Epstein, Levine. Smith. Although it has only been in existence for one year, the Philosophical Society is already an active student organization in Mepham. Under the direction of Mrs. Day, advisor, Martin Laskin and Mitchell Wand, chairman and co-chairman, the club meets once a week to discuss questions pertaining to philosophical viewpoints. While discussing extemporaneous topics, members learn to reason and to discover strong points and fallacies in others’ arguments. At meetings various viewpoints arc discussed and participants benefit from other’s opinions. Chairman Laskin explains, “By introspection we can grow into a better part of our society.” Philosophy Club Although this fall marked the debut of the Pep Club, it has already proven itself an important and worthwhile organization. Under the guidance of Miss Runkle as moderator and Judy Jankes as president, the club has tried to instill school spirit in the student body. Its purpose is to inform Mepham students when and where games are held, and to encourage student attendance and participation. With the help of co-chairmen Margaret Valentine and Diane Thomas, many projects were pursued by the club. Members worked diligently on posters and pins for upcoming games. Other activities included planning a parade at the Mcpham-Cal-houn football game, and working for student awareness concerning National Education Week. The Pep Club has accomplished much in its first year of existence. Pep Club ROW 1: Godfrey, Liston, Jankes, Buczat, Reiss. Monks, Waswo. FOURTH ROW: Coach Limmcr, Coach Thurbcr, Skretch, Paz, Gozdzeiwski, Storyk, Sore, Marin, Barocas, Licata, Off, Lapidus, Coach Johnson. Football Coach Risberg Although Mepham’s football team suffered its poorest season in many years, there were many factors that contributed to the Buc’s downfall. In a league where three teams were tied for top honors, the Pirates faced such formidable foes as Lawrence, Hempstead, Freeport, and East Meadow. A second factor was the injuries that hampered the team throughout the season. Without ample reserves, it was difficult for Coach Reisberg to make successful replacements. Stan Jacobson at center, Stan Joye and Phil Grebinar at guards, Tom Kizis, Bob Storyk and Timmy Balunis at tackles, Steve God-ziewski, and Dan Rooney at ends, Dennis Dore at fullback, and Larry Ross at halfback were among those who sustained serious injuries. There were, however, a few highlights to the “64” season. Mepham’s offensive attack looked optimistic when on the first play of the season Larry Ross raced 72 yards for a tally. In the second quarter, Dore carried the ball over the top from the three yard line. Prospects again looked bright when Mepham beat Baldwin in the second game with Dore and Lapidus carrying for the score on short yardage plays. The coming year looks bright with many letter men returning and the able leadership of Coaches Reisberg, Limmer, and Johnson. 150 FIRST ROW: Sandler, Stock, Munno, Fisher, Muscara, Gallagher, Dussich. Wrestling Mepham has long been known for its excellence in wrestling, and this year was no exception. Our matmen, in addition to winning the section and county championships, set a new Nassau County record of 44 consecutive victories. The fantastic winning streak which began in 1962 was broken by a powerful Wantagh squad, who nosed out a 21—19 victory. In spite of this upset, Mepham went on to defeat the rest of its opponents, and win the championships. One of the high points of this wrestling season was the victory over rival Calhoun. Mepham picked up the needed points in the unlimited bout and emerged victorious with a score of 21—19. With this victory Mepham broke the county record of 41 consecutive wins set by Valley Stream Central. The grapplers then went on to win two more matches before being stopped by Wantagh. Mepham has three section one champions, Jim Nanos, Mike Fitzgerald and Tim Balunis. These boys helped her tally 102 points to take the South Shore Division title, leading the closest contender, Calhoun, by 11 points. Ken Baer. Bill Munno, Ala’ Stock, and Chuck Ritchie took second place honors, with Garry Nussbaum, Gary Colasuano, and Bob Paz placing third. These ten then won the Nassau County Section 8 championship for the fourth year in a row. Tim Balunis placed second in unlimited, and Alan Stock third in his weight class. Mike Fitzgerald, in addition to being a county champion in his class, was chosen as the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament. Mike then won first place honors in the state competition. With boys like these in our corner it was no wonder that Mepham did so well. Stan Joye, Dennis Bressack, Bill Kendrick, Mike Atwell, and Tom Ki-zis should also be congratulated for their fine performances. Manager Stan Jacobson did an excellent job. The remarkable Coach Ken Huntc and assistant Coach Donald Jackson have our sincere admiration and thanks. They arc the men setting a tradition of wrestling excellence, a tradition which the Mepham wrestlers seem to uphold, and which makes the students of Mepham very proud. 152 KNEELING: Ashworth, Furtak. STANDING: Peshkin, Gooler, Jordan, Breslow, Zoback, Newman, Nealy, Reiter, Goldncr. Basketball Coach Gerck Competing in the best league in Nassau County, the Mepham High hoopsters found themsleves outclassed during the 1964-65 season. The Bucs were able to win only one league game and three games overall. The season opened in fine fashion as the Pirates easily handled last year's county champs, the mules, from Malverne. The streak was halted when Berner defeated the Mepham Squad. Mepham competed in the Calhoun Holiday Festival, inspired by coach Ge-rek to a superb performance. After defeating Mineola in the opening round, Mepham’s five played their best ball of the year in a losing cause against arch-rival Calhoun. Though the colts came out on top by a point, the Mepham team should be justifiably proud of this fine performance. The rest of the season contained few bright spots for Mepham’s pirates. Twice the Bucs gave such outstanding teams as Lawrence, and Massapequa some uneasy moments but the opponent was always able to overcome our team’s efforts. Against a strong St. Agnes, squad Mepham narrowly missed pulling a big upset. Stand-outs for this year’s team were Bill Ashworth, the only returning player from last year’s starting five; Jim Nealy, steady junior backcourt performer; Stan Furtak, who kept the team in action in even the roughest spots and Ira Breslow, playing some good ball for the Pirates in the early season before untimely injury, particularly against Calhoun High. 154 Tennis This year the tennis team, under the guidance of Coach Friedman, encountered a difficult, but challenging season. The loss of six of last year's racketmen seriously hampered the team’s efforts in a very competitive league, since there were only two seniors left on the squad. However, this year’s team served as a proving ground for next year. Fred Eisen, the only returning first-string player, improved steadily and should continue to be outstanding at first singles. Richie and Billie Seader will play the second and third slots respectively, while Richie Schop, Harold Wilncr, Len Zwclling, Rich Chipkin, and Richie Diamond should round out the doubles ranks. Credit must also be given to the hard-working efforts of Bill Lerner, and Stu Rubin. The marked improvement of the team at the end of the season demonstrated the potential for a successful season next year. KNEELING: Wilner, Lerner, Eisen, Schop. STANDING: Ganz, K. Grossman, Zwelling, D. Grossman, Rubin, Mr. Friedman. This year’s cross country team, under the excellent guidance of Coach Hawthorne, worked hard to make a successful showing in an extremely grueling sport in which the man who has the most stamina, perseverance, and drive emerges as the victor. The boys competed in S.S.A.L. Section I competition and finals. They would often run two and one half miles at the Salisbury Athletic Field or Bethpage State Park. Among the outstanding point scorers were Ray Jordan, Keith Nealy, Neil Long, Dave Carter, Ron Plutino, and Andy Streit. Much credit should be given to these hard-working members of the cross country team. FIRST ROW: Vrooman, Strait, Long, Wenich. SECOND ROW: Armson, Carter, Peyser, Reilly, Nealy, Gren. Cross Country FIRST ROW: Bruno, Tonkinson, Mulligan, Neili, Nealy, SECOND ROW: Mr. Felskc, Chapin, Goldsmith, Katz, Reilly, Philips, Loop. To some the sport of ri fiery is considered to be uninteresting, but to the six members involved it is a test of steady nerves and keen sight. The season started off with a bang, but as it progressed the record started to slide ending at 5—5. The team was led by high scorer Paul Cadro and rounded out by Keith Nealy, Joe Bruno, Russell Nieli, Bruce Mulli- KNEELING: Franco. BACK ROW: Mr. DesJardins, Turney, Furman, Messina, Beck. gan, Russ Tonkinson, Ken Reilly and manager, Jim Chapin. Under the experienced coaching of Mr. Felske, the team expects to improve considerably. Potential record breakers for next year are Russell Nieli and Ken Reilly. With several underclassmen coming up next year, the team has a chance for good record. Mepham’s bowling team has compiled an outstanding record over the last few years. This year’s team was no exception. Although some individuals bowl only for personal glory and reward, bowling is essentially a team sport where everyone’s efforts are important. The varsity members are: George Furman, John Beck, Daniel Turney, Joseph De Riso, Frank Messina and Vincent Franco. Frank Messina led the team throughout the season with his fine bowling. The team’s greatest accomplishments were in tournament play. During Christmas Vacation they placed fourth after two days of bowling. In the Roll-Offs of the SSAL tournament we finished fourth. The team performed best in the Section VIII tournament, where we placed second in a close battle with Levittown Memorial. With Mr. Des Jardines as coach, the bowling team has risen to new heights. Bowling 157 Indoor Track FRONT ROW: Talesnick, Hutzlcr, Reilly, Carter, Peiser, Feldman, Rooney. SECOND ROW: Vrooman, Fircstein, Gren, Kash. Hensley, Sandler. THIRD ROW: Sweeting, Krinsky, Wicks, Bruno, Greene, Brunetti. FOURTH ROW: Mathews, Swidinsky, Malka, Schwaidclson, Hoelzer, Wenisch. FIFTH ROW: Hagin, Mosko-witz, Katzenstein, Wcissman, Pollack. New events take place at Mepham each year and this year marked the beginning of our soccer team. Since this was the first year for the team only a junior varsity team was organized and no captain was chosen. However, under the able leadership of Coach Hunt, next year the soccer team will consist of a junior varsity and varsity team. This year thirty members were picked and their good record was well worth the effort they put into their practice. The soccer team is looking forward to many successful years at Mepham. This year has marked the beginning of several new teams, among which is the indoor track. Even though this was the first year that the team was formally organized, many students participated to make this a successful year. Among the participants were: Andre Swidzinski in the quarter mile, Bill Hutzler in high hurdles, Dan Rooney running the half mile, Alan Sandler and Leslie Corwin in the 60 yard dash, and Mike Tranzino and Dave Carter in the two mile. During the year, the team entered several tournaments, including the St. Francis Prep Meet and the Section 8 Meet. The indoor track team is looking forward to many successful years at Mepham. SECOND ROW: Alonge, Muscara, Abrams, Gros- Nealy, Ncmroff, Gclbman. so, Clarin, Ficco, Meirau, Cohen. THIRD ROW: True, Baseball Coach Gerek Besides being a year of transition and building, 1965 may very well witness one of the most talented baseball squads in recent years make their bid to capture the sectional championship. Although most of the starting lineup of last year’s nine have graduated, some of the most able veterans are back to lead a youthful team. In Buddy Martin, Coach Gerek may have his finest prospect since Mike Carubia. As a sophomore last year, Buddy led the team in hitting after immediately securing a starting berth at first base. Back at second base for the third year is senior Larry Ross. This lefty’s size is deceiving, but his bat does his talking. The other half of the keystone combination has not been sewed up as yet, but sophomore Joe Ficco is making a strong bid to break into the lineup. Rounding out the infield at third base will probably be Paul Alonge, a junior who hit well over .300 last year on Junior Varsity. Another sophomore, Bruce Clarin, seems to be the number one catcher. The most probable outfield will consist of Barry Nemeroff, Cliff Voege, and Richard Cohen. The top hurlers will be Phil Newman, returning from last year, Bruce Gelbman, Charles Gableman, Phil Jantz, Roger Schleuter, and Alan True. Coach Gerek can indeed hope for success this year, and expect it in the years to come. 159 FOURTH—Jacobson, Staryk, Roche, Hensley, Grebinar, Godzewski; THIRD—Esposito, McHalc, Slade, Wallace, Weiss, Cash, Jordan, Barnard, Fuentes, SECOND-— Mathews, Field, Feldman, Breslow, Minutello, Skretch, Reilly, FIRST—Swidzinski, Hutzler, Fishman, Fireslain, Corwin, Sardlin, Roony, Balunis, Malka.—this only includes a partial section of the track team of 1965. Track Coach Risbcrg As we go to press on this year’s Treasure Chest, our track team, under its new coach, Coach Reis-berg, is looking forward to one of the best seasons of the last few years. The enthusiasm of the boys has been awakened by Coach Reisberg. Returning cindermen Bill Hutzler, Andre Swidzinski, Jra Breslow, Sam Malka, Dave Fishman, Les Corwin, Alan Sandler, Ralph Hensley, Steve Firestein, and Pat Minetello are expected to form the nucleus of the team. Graduating seniors Grody, Hagelman, and Cowan, will be missed by traditional track fans, but the vacant positions on the starting team are expected to be filled by very capable boys. Track is traditionally the last athletic event of the school year, and if all goes as expected, the class of 1965 will leave Mepham at the conclusion of a successful track season. 160 fir Varsity Cheerleaders KNEELING: Harris, Falco.
