The Class of 1962 Presents Treasure Chest Wellington C. Mepham High Bellmore, New York i r TT-------- lit Avv..' •tflH’lV, OUR ADMINISTRATION, COUNSELORS OF YOUTH 12-25 Through an efficient administration and faculty, we learn much in our years at Mepham in preparation for the years to come. A LOOK AT YOUTH 28-45 It is to the sophomores and juniors that we, the class of 1962. look to carry on the traditions so well associated with Mepham’s history. SPIRIT IN OUR ACTIVITIES 48-73 From eight to three we are busy with our studies, but after school, many of us remain to participate in extra-curricular activities. In this way we lend our time and talents to better our school. BUILDING YOUTH'S PHYSICAL FITNESS 76-93 Mepham’s physical education program is based on the principle that all should have the opportunity to participate, whether in intramural or varsity. PRESENTING OUR GRADUATES — CLASS OF 1962 96-139 The high school years pass quickly and at graduation we reflect on our past achievements. We look back with pride: and forward with expectation. YOUTH IN OUR COMMUNITY 142-160 Our activities are not confined to our home and school alone, but also include our community. All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. At first the infant, Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms. And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel And shining morning face, creeping the snail Unwillingly to school. And then the lover, Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier, Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard, Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel, Seeking the bubble reputation Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice, In fair round belly with good capon lin’d, With eyes severe, and beard of formal cut. Full of wise saws and modern instances; And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts Into the lean and slipper’d pantaloon, With spectacles on nose and pouch on side; His youthful hose well sav’d a world too wide For his shrunk shank: and his big manly voice. Turning again toward childish treble, pipes And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all, That ends this strange eventful history. Is second childishness and mere oblivion: Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything. — William Shakespeare To the Class of 1962: You have noted and you remember the map of Long Island on the north wall of the Auditorium. There is a star on that map which indicates our school, Mepham High School. As you look at the map. it appears large because it covers most of the wall. You know that actually it is quite small in comparison to Long Island itself. Long Island seems large as you live on it because it covers most of your perspective. As you travel far and wide, when you turn your thoughts back to Long Island it may seem small in comparison to the World. You have progressed during your year at Mepham, making individual use of your abilities according to your determinations. You have joined in cooperative activities to a high degree of achievement. You have found that the insurmountable obstacles have diminished before your enterprise. As the years continue, your experience in coping with situations should enable you to solve the problems of life and citizenship. Problems that at first may appear overwhelming will shrink to manageable size as you keep them in proper perspective. The star on the map attracts your attention when you look at it — I hope the school will always be a shining beacon for you for pleasant memories and as a source of strength. As it is liiy privilege to address you now, I wish you happiness. As you read this in the future, you will know that your real happiness is in the satisfaction you receive from things well done. Sincerely, 5 Herman A. Tennant Dedication So often we have cried, “Give us light that we might tread safely into the unknown.” Exasperated, the adults have smiled . . . wearily waiting for us to be disillusioned — “Youth is a passing thing. Give them time.” But we lack the patience for this. We stand on the edge of a hemisphere of light and a hemisphere of darkness. We peer out into the black sky and laugh at the twinkling host. Our forefathers thought the stars to be holy, and so worshipped them. We ask to conquer the stars. We stand within the confines of two everlasting hostile empires. And we ask to be allowed to go and slay the dragon. We have-the moral energy. We have the imagination. We are restless, turbulent, cynical idealists. Soon we will have the knowledge. We are Youth! There are lights and moral beacons shining in this world. They are the lights of the old who have remained young. They reflect our exuberances and refract our impatience. They are the mellowed idealists. For this we are grateful, and to them we dedicate our lives and our hopes, that our deeds may have within them glory for these souls who so inspire us. Their names may be forgotten — do not let their spirits die. One name we wish to keep with us, and so, to thee we dedicate this yearbook, Miss Margaret E. Winheim. Principal of the District and the Board “The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future life.” — PLATO. This is the concept upon which the Board of Education functions. It is their responsibility to convene regularly to discuss possible alterations to be made in the secondary schools to insure that this direction never be deterred from that of a well-informed anti free-thinking American. Much attention to details of organization and construction are required to- adapt our ever-expanding school system to changing needs. The Board works diligently to provide for the students the well-rounded education necessary in today’s world. Through the Board’s tireless efforts and suggestions, many measures have been proposed. The planned expansion and renovation of Mepham High School is due, in part, to the efTorts of our Board. One can appreciate the work which these devoted individuals have contributed toward the educational progress of the school district by simply citing the fact that Mepham operates under one of the best educational systems in the United States. Mr. John Mahon. T reasurer Mrs. Ruth Hamilton District Clerk Mr. Bernard Morris. Attorney of Education Guide Our School Policy. Dr. Julius C. Braun Mr. Julius C. Braun, chief administrator of the district, is invested with the responsibility of providing for the students’ welfare. His principal concern is the preparation of the students for success in their future endeavors. As Supervising Principal of the District, Mr. Braun faces the difficult task of directing the activities and formulating the policies of the junior and senior high schools of our district. Mr. Braun, a native of Buffalo, New York, is certainly well qualified to assume his varied responsibilities. A graduate of the University of BulTalo, Mr. Braun received his doctorate from Columbia University. Because of his association with students as a classroom teacher, Mr. Braun is keenly aware of youth’s problems. His position as superintendent of schools in western New York gave him considerable experience in the field of school administration. Consequently, the education of 7200 students has been entrusted to a man well qualified to meet all the needs of each student as an individual. Since the United States is founded on a democratic system of government by the people and for the people, we the people must be prepared to meet the challenge of the future and to deal capably with it. We, therefore, owe much gratitude to Mr. Braun, who has given us the opportunity to obtain this necessary training to become better citizens. 13 Herman A. Tennant The most valuable asset that any graduating class possesses is a determined, dedicated and inspiring high school principal. Mr. Herman Tennant, principal of Mepham High School, has long been considered an outstanding leader of youth in this community. Mr. Tennant’s exceptional success as an administrator may well be attributed to his extensive experience. After coming to District Number Three in 1935, Mr. Tennant became chairman of the Mathematics Department. During World War II he served as assistant principal of Mepham for two and a half years and was, for several years, principal of Merrick Avenue Junior High. Gerald E. Tarbell “Education has for its object the formation of character.” — HERBERT SPENCER. This has been the aim and chief concern of Mepham’s Assistant Principal, Mr. Gerald E. Tarbell. Having held this position since September, 1958. Mr. Tarbell has displayed a great interest in the welfare and activities of the student body. District Staff The high standards and achievements of which Mepham is so proud owe much of their success to the dedicated efforts of our district staff. Both administrative assistants, Mr. Eugene Hallen-back and Dr. Frederick Stunt, are former Mepham principals. Other members of the staff include Miss Agnes J. Bcrwind, director of instruction and curri- culum, Mr. Harold McCourt, director ol Pupil Personnel Services, and Mr. Ralph K. Alger, supervisor of English. We certainly owe a debt of thanks to the district staff for its tireless work, which makes possible the continued excellence of achievement in our district. Mr. Ralph K. Alger Miss Agnes J. Our Policy Makers The opinions and wishes of the student body are reflected in the work of the House of Representatives. To date, this organization has effected many important achievements. It has been successful in organizing the annual bonfire. To ensure an encouraging student representation at “away games,” the House arranged transportation for the student body. By means of petition, the student government has succeeded in changing the dates of the Junior and Senior Proms. The Varsity letter represents a goal, a goal which every student strives to attain. It represents pride, the pride that every student has in himself and his accomplishments. It also represents the tremendous amount of industry that every student must devote to attain this highest of awards. Winners of the Varsity M ‘ arc the leaders of Mcpham. They reflect the high ideals of industry, achievement, and opportunity for which Mepham has earned recognition. 65 One of the finest and oldest of Mepham's many institutions is the A Cappella Choir. Throughout the years, the Choir's high standards have remained intact; consequently, it has become renowned as an excellent group of singers of consistently fine quality. The Christmas Season brought the band indoors. The Christmas Concert, presented in January, was the music department’s foremost production. In addition to its numerous concerts, the band also participated annually in state competition. Without fail, Mc-pham’s musical entry has received top ratings. The consistantly high quality of the band’s performance this year has been due, not only to the devoted efTorts of Dr. Ritchie, but also to the fine performances of Robert Bcnanti, Captain, and Robert Livingston, Manager. 68 Band Dr. Ritchie. The highlight of the year’s performances was the annual Band and Orchestra Concert presented in January. The District Orchestra also travelled to other high schools on Long Island to perform for school assemblies. Mepham places a great emphasis on entertainment, and, consequently, it has many talented organizations. Among the leading organizations formed for such a purpose is the chorus. Under the direction of Mr. Alderfer, and the leadership of president Ellen Graziano, the chorus annually performs admirably at the Spring Arts Festival and the Christmas Concert. Under the inspiring leadership of President Virginia Abruzzo, the Pep Club has worked diligently to achieve this goal. Wearing white blouses and dark skirts, the members enthusiastically cheer at athletic events and pep rallies, waving shakers to emphasize their already abundant spirit. Both the teams on the field as the spectators in the stands have greatly appreciated this display of spirit. The Pirettes, Mepham’s precision formation dance team, although in existence for only 10 years, has earned a reputation as one of the foremost kicklines on Long Island. Dancing at sporting events and at the annual Pop Concert, it performs intricate routines. Starting an “if and but ' season with a definite problem of lack of si e and depth, the football team compiled a 3-5 record while facing the county’s top football teams. The season opened promisingly enough as Mepham easily defeated archrival Calhoun. During the game, Mepham presented a strong offensive attack, but a lax defense kept the score close. This was the pattern for the rest of the year. Coach Sabetto's new “pro T” formation was added to the single wing offense. This gave Mepham a good passing attack in which quarterback Bob Fuglister threw repeatedly to ends Bill Piner, Marshal Hardy and halfback Tony Abruzzo. Mepham also possessed a strong running game featuring the powerful inside running of fullback Dennis Hayes and the spectacular outside sprints of “All League” halfback Robert Porfidio. The blocking was provided bv “All County guard Nick Luby. Roger Curran. Donald Joyce and Ken Long. Excellent performances were turned in by a fine crop of sophomores. Halfbacks Charles Grodv. Other leading performers are James Hochfelder, Mike Intemicola and Donald Gushing. Two promising juniors who should see regular action are Richard Papenhausen and Mark De-Micco while Tony Abru zo and Peter Swensen are the top sophomore prospects. 80 As the Treasure Chest goes to press, the track team, training under Coach Sabetto, is preparing to open its season. There are high expectations for a winning season, although the cindermen will have a very tough schedule, hav ing to meet every top track team in Nassau. The team will also bear the burden of having no home meets. The top Mepham hopes are seniors Donald May-land and Joseph Genalo. Mayland was one of the leading pole vaulters last year and is a definite threat for county and state honors. Genalo, a high jumper, is also expected to do well in county competition. Juniors George Bosher and Darius Perry are Mephain’s leading distance runners. Bosher will run the mile event, and Perry will handle the half-mile. Raymond Nicchia and Edward Heidiker should do very well in the sprints. Nicchia is also our top broad jumper. Coach Gerek The basketball team had one of its finest seasons in years, as they compiled twelve wins in eighteen games, while playing in the toughest league in the county. In league competition, Mephani had to face such powerhouses as Hempstead, Uniondale, and Lawrence. After a hard-fought campaign, which saw Mepham win five out of the last six games, the team finished with a 7-5 league record and a third place tie with Lawrence. Outstanding performances were turned in to beat Uniondale and Lawrence. In non-league play the team was very successful, winning five games and losing only one. Junior, Marshall Hardy, was second in rebounding, and sophomore, Lloyd Krosser, was second in scoring. JefT Bourne, a sophomore, also saw regular duty. Cross-country competition requires the participants to run a grueling 2 i miles over rough terrain. Commendation is certainly due for their fine efforts. The tennis team, under the direction of Mr. Friedman, won two matches while losing ten. Inexperience was the team’s biggest problem. Of the top seven players, only two were seniors. Mr. Berridge is a willing chaperon at all senior-junior events, serving as a valuable link between the student body and the faculty and administration. Perhaps the most important asset possessed by Mr. Berridge is his ability to inspire those seniors with whom he works. His dedication and quiet, effective leadership have spread throughout the senior class, resulting in the tremendous successes of all seniors activities. The Class of 1962 would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Berridge, for his constant devotion to enrich our high school years. 96 Stephen Ciaal. President Joan Ebtinger. Under the capable leadership of the senior officers and their advisor, Mr. Berridge, the Committee has demonstrated its concern for school activities through the highly successful and well organized activities it has presented. During the final quarter of the 1961 school year, the Senior Planning Committee presented the very successful Junior Prom, Underwater Paradise. This year it sponsored the Harvest Moon Ball and Senior Prom. Besides the many wonderful dances that were planned throughout the year, the Committee was also responsible for arranging events in other facets of school life. One of the best remembered of these was the bonfire and pep rally held before the Lawrence football game. Led by our cheerleaders, the pep rally succeeded in eliciting much school spirit. From the beginning of the sports season to the end of June, Mr. Berridge has been busily attending to a multitude of details. He and the entire Senior Planning Committee have done an excellent job in carrying out many of the school functions. 98 BACK ROW: Getz, Rosner, LaVine, Landau, Gabbrielli, Rust, Brunner. Senior Sales Early this year, the seniors were asked to volunteer their services to sell ice cream, coffee, hot (logs, candy, and soda at all home sporting events. Over one hundred dedicated school leaders offered to sacrifice their time and energy to aid their school in this manner. Their dedication was unfaltering. They were often required to continue selling at football games during inclement weather. Furthermore, these enthusiastic seniors volunteered to sell bookcovers. school hats, and MHS 62 pins during school hours. Headed by George Kubicke. Senior Sales has done a great deal to solicit money for the Senior Class. Much of this money has been used to support senior activities, and a portion has been set aside to provide a scholarship for the Class of '63. Their constant efforts and high-working spirits have contributed greatly to the Senior Class of 62. 99 BARBARA AMBRECHT DIANE AMICO BARBARA ANDERSEN MICHAEL ANTONELLI VIRGINIA ABRUZZO CHRISTINE ADAMS WILLIAM AIMETTI DONALD ALBERT EILEEN ADLER IRENE ALPER Climb Every THOMAS AZZARA KAREN BAILEY MERRILY BAIRD BETTE JANE BALL 100 DIANE BENJAMIN DENISE BARTHOLOMEW ROBERT BAUER PHILIP BAYER BETTY-JANE BEACH ALVIN BEITCHMAN ROBERT BENANTI Mountain STEVEN BERMAN WILLIAM BERNHARDT MARIANNE BISIGNI WILLIAM BOSAKOWSKI HAROLD BENSON TERRIE BERGER DAVID BERGMAN 101 KATHVBRANDT JANET BRISK IE SANDRA BROCK ANTI IONA BROOKE GWENDOLYN BROWN MARILYN BROWN FRANCES BRl’NNER MARIE BRUNO Search High JOHN BUCKLEY JAMES BURNS CAMILLE BUTTACAVOLI DENNIS CACCAVO KATHLEEN CALLAHAN VINCENT CAMA 102 STEPHANIE CAPPS RAYMOND CARHUFF JOHN CARLOW MARIA CARLUCCI and Low VINCENT CASTORINA LINDA CASTRACANE EUGENE CHANG ROBERT CHELI MARY MADELINE CHEVALIER MARIE CINTINO ROBERT CARROLL MURIEL CARSTENS MICHAEL CARUBIA SUZANNE CASS 103 FRA NC ES CONST A NT IN E DONALD COOK RAYMOND COTTER RICHARD CRATTY RICHARD Cl RING I ONE PATRICIA CLARKE RICHARD COCHRAN RONXI COHEN DENNIS CLASSI GEORGE CONNOLIA Follow Every BARBARA CUOMO CAMILLE CUOMO ROGER CURRAN DONALD CUSHING 104 THOMAS DAMS JOAN D’ALESSIO CLIFFORD DAMERON MARGUERITE DANISI PATRICIA DARCY GILBERT DANIELS CAROL DAVIES By Way SIGMUND DICKER GLORIA DiGlACOMO CHARLES DiSAIA’O JO ANN DONOHl’E APRIL DeCAMP NANCY DeSORBO GRACE DIBARTOLOMEO 105 KAREN DUVA FAITHMARIE DOTE KATHLEEN DOUGHERTY AUDREY DROISEN Every Path CONSTANCE EGGLETON PETER EISELE FLORENCE ELLER ERIC ELLISON KERRY ELLSWORTH IRENE EPP 106 PHYLLIS DUHAIME RAYMOND EPP CHRISTOPHER 1 AH FA JOY FELDSTEIN You Know JUDITH FINK JANET FISHER CLIFFORD FISHMAN DOROTHY FITZCERALD KATHLEEN FITZGERALD JAMES FEMIA WILLIAM FENCI 107 PATRICK A FILIBERTO BARBARA FREDERICKS DOUGLAS ERIE STEPHEN GAAL LAURA GABBRIELLI JUDITH FLAACK EDWARD FOX SARA FLEISCHHACKER ROBERT FRANKEL RUTH FOR MONT LOIS FRANZA Climb Every CAROLANN GALLEY CHARLES GARFIELD ILENE GEIST HOWARD GELFAND JOSEPH GENALO CHARLES GERMAIN Mountain HARVEY GOLDSTEIN MICHAEL GOLDSTEIN LEONARD GORDON LINDA GRAHAM JAMES GERMAIN EVELYN GETRAER MARLENE GETZ SAMUEL GLABERMAN 109 STEELE GREEN VIRGINIA GRANDE BARBARA GRATT ELLEN GRAZIANO ARTHUR GREENE MARK GREENSIDE SUSAN GRESS Ford Every DAVID GRIFFIN DEVON GRIMM ELLIOT GROSS CAROLE GROSSMAN GERALDINE GROTH TEDRICK GUNDERSEN 110 ROCHELLE GREBIN PAULINE HAIN CHARLES HALL JOYCE HALL JANE HALPERIN Stream ROGER HART EDWARD HEIDICKER RICHARD HARTMANN DENNIS HAYES DIANE HIETNER MARSHA HEMENWAY 111 TOBIE HANDLER GEORGE HANEBURY HOW ARD HANSEN ELAINE HART MARC!
