The years have gone like scattered leaves Dispersed by envious time Gathered here As if in fear Of winter's cruelest clime. Here behind these ageless doors Lie worlds of long ago Friendly faces Familiar places Untouched by worry or woe. So what if winds ne'er cease to blow And time flees unexplained Our youth we hold Within this fold Untouched imprisoned retained. Sandra Altner Dedication For the inspiration of higher standards of athletic ability and physical prowess, our thanks must go to a highly respected and revered person, Coach Frank Gardner. For over twenty years Coach Gardner has aided Mepham students in attaining their athletic potential. His satisfaction has been derived from the sight of graduating Seniors, who, because of the work he has done, leave Mepham better suited for the rigors of their time. Therefore, it is with the respect and affection due to an honored and dearly beloved teacher and guide, that we, the Senior class of 1961 dedicate this Treasure Chest to Frank Gardner in the last year of his service to Central High School District 3. — CO 1- Od 1— — o 2 • - • STANDING: Mr. Heppen, Mr. Reinhord, Mr. Lehman SEATED: Mr. Hansen, Mr. Froelich, Mr. King, Mr. Braun, Mr. McCarthy. Board of Education STANDING: Mr. Mahon SEATED: Mr. Morris, Mrs. Hamilton. Next in importance to freedom and justice is popular education, without which neither freedom nor justice can be permanently maintained. The education of man, which was deemed so important by President Garfield, is still important today. The Board of Education works diligently to achieve, for students, the well-rounded education necessary in the world of today. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the Board of Education whose conscientious work has made our District one of the finest in the state. We offer our sincere thanks to the members of the Board: Mr. King, Mr. Heppan, Mr. Reinhard, Mr. Lehman, Mr. Hansen, Mr. Froelich, Mr. Braun and Mr. McCarthy. 8 Mr. Julius C. Thus, a great deal of credit for the smooth operation of this school and its functions is due to Mr. Herman A. Tennant who, as principal of Mepham, is in charge of administrative duties. Everyone in Mepham is aware of the fact that Mr. Tennant has been a member of the staff of Central High School District Number Three for over twenty-five years. His long record of achievement had broadened his administrative knowledge; therefore in 1957 Mr. Tennant was ably prepared to assume the duties and responsibilities inherent to the position of Principal of Mepham High School. We are the first class to progress through the school under Mr. Tennant, and all of our accomplishments are a reflection on his excellent handling of the details, major and minor, involved in the operation of a school such as ours. Principals Mr. Gerald E. Tarbell, our Assistant Principal for the past three years, graduated from St. Lawrence University. After teaching physics at Mepham for several years, he became Assistant Principal at Jerusalem Avenue Junior High School in September, 1957. The following year he assumed his present position. His great interest in the students and their activities has been largely responsible for his successful service to our school. He is an enthusiastic spectator at athletic events and attends all other programs held at Mepham. Mr. Tarbell — Assistant Principal 12 Jone E. Aemisegger Mathematics Walton H. Alderfer Choir Hilda B. First, a layout of each page is made. Then pictures are taken, art work drawn, and articles written. After the printing has been done, the page is proofread and corrected. Meanwhile, the sales and advertising committees do their respective duties. The finished product is this, the Treasure Chest of 1961. Without a capable staff the editors would have had great difficulty in producing this yearbook. Among the staff were three whose tireless work singled them out for special recognition: Sharon Schwartz, Susan Henrich, and Jeffrey Gilbert. The quality of this, your Treasure Chest, is a reflection of the diligent work of its staff. The members help teachers,- thus, they perform a service not only to themselves but also to Mepham. The Club also presents many informative programs. The F.T.A. has great cause to be proud of its accomplishments. Back Castano, Lyman, Del Mage, Hammer. Skull and Bones 56 Cloim to Fame Stars of Senior Play Our Bernhardt One of the hardest working groups in Mepham is the Skull and Bones Dramatic Society. After aspiring thes-pians acquire one hundred hours of time spent on dramatic productions, they are inducted into Skull and Bones. Members and apprentices of Skull and Bones not only act in the G.O. Play, Senior Play, one-act plays, and Spring Play, but also paint and construct all scenery, make costumes, collect props, supervise lighting, and help direct these plays. The Senior Play was a gala production of THE HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE which starred Pietro Caporusso, Elaine Grody, Penny Kingman, Ronnie Stinner, Marion Schweisguth, Barry Grimm, and Cliff Rugg. It played to capacity audiences on both nights, as did the successful Spring Play, THE GREAT SEBASTIANS, which featured Peter Caporusso, Elaine Grody, Warren Zolot, and Lowell Peters. Now, Anthony! Carusso, Mancusso 57 Back: Waswo, Ehrenpreis, Wolf, Stinner, Steele, Heinsohn, Schweisguth, Finkleson. Front: Hoffman. The Band is a complement to almost every organization in Mepham. Wherever music is needed — at the football games, the pep rallies, the plays, — the band has a major supporting role. Sweet refrains waft up through the school, broken occasionally by a sour note. However, these faux pas never occur during a performance of the choir, for the members are under the capable baton of H. Walton Alderfer. Mr. Alderfer, Advisor BACK ROW: Heitner, Fields, Hammond, Andersen. Del Mage, Sheldon, Re, Del Vecchio. THIRD ROW: De Sorbo, Saracen, Spencer, Klein, Herrmann, Burke. They sing at commencement, community functions, district schools, the annual Christmas presentation, K L M Building in downtown New York, and the Spring Choir Show. The A Cappella Choir sings with the accompaniment of only one piano, thus allowing the power and beauty of the Choir to be aired. One must hear the Choir to truly appreciate it. Leo, Greene, Nussbaum, Hardy, Curran, Schlueder, Piner, Long, Pinto. At the start of the football season, Mepham's team looked like a championship team. The team bore out this prediction as it rolled over its first five opponents. Unfortunately, the team was beset by accidents, which crippled its smashing power. The leading ground-gainer, Dennis Hayes, hurt his knee and was sidelined for the season. The outstanding player on Mepham's team was undoubtedly halfback Roger Dennis. Bob Porfidio, Charles Witte, Buzzy Hochberg, Warren Zolot, Nick Luby, Rod Ritterbusch, Mike Rhoads, Phil Gianfrancesco, Bob Christiansen, Dave Ralston, and Ken Long also did fine jobs, and our school respects their performances. Coach Sobetto 69 BACK ROW: Heinrich, Huke, Mullen, Werner, Zempski, Furrer, Dillmon. Peterman, Gleason, Burns SECOND ROW: Nussbaum, Du-haime, Albert. Long, Hyman, Griffin, Domeron, Goldstein, Costello FRONT ROW: Kane, Ellison, Cheslock, Cetto, Pinto, Hooker, Stock, Porfidio, Perlmutter. Coach Hunte Although the calibre of high school wrestling has been rising rapidly, Mepham still is a foreboding power. We finished first place in our division. Our only losses came in extremely close matches. Robert Stock, a sophomore, and Bob Porfidio, a junior, were undefeated at the end of the season. Harry Furrer, Tom Costello, Kevin Mullen, William Cetto, and Jerry Werner were others who turned in fine performances. The two most thrilling meets were against Uniondale and Calhoun. Our one point win snapped the former's win streak, while our loss to the latter was decided by the heavyweight match. 70 Wrestling FRONT ROW: Dennis, Pollack, Gianfrancesco BACK ROW: Mackay, Stroetz, P. Segerdahl, Curran, R. Segerdahl, Hardy, Cushing, Internicola. Coach Gerek This year's team had the misfortune of being in the hardest league on Long Island. Fighting for first place in our league were four of the best teams in Nassau, and perhaps even in the country. Caught in the middle of this melee was Mepham's team, which held its own. Its excellent performances were all the more enlighting since the bulk of the team was composed of Juniors. Ed Pollack, a slick ballhandler, has been called by many one of the best backcourt men on Long Island. His teammates Roger Dennis and Phil Gianfrancesco rounded out the Senior element on the team. The outstanding Juniors were Richard and Paul Segerdahl, Marshall Hardy, Roger Curran, and Mike Internicola. 73 BACK ROW: Ralston, Hochfelder, Millard, Segerdahl, Cushing MIDDLE ROW: Green, Gilbert, Meiselbach, Internicola, Talesnick FRONT ROW: Carubia, Powers, Dobson. Baseball As this yearbook went to press, the baseball team had not yet begun to practice. However, on the basis of the available talent, it appears that it will be one of the best teams Mepham has ever fielded. The starting team will probably contain: Bob Porfidio, Steele Green, Bob Fuglister, Jim Powers, Jeff Gilbert, Sal Strano, Dick Ralston, Don Cushing and pitchers Bill Millard, Dave Meiselbach and Mike Carubia. Coach Gerek 74 Coach Friedman Although they were in a very difficult league, this year's tennis team finished in a respectable fourth place with a record of four wins and five losses. A high point in the season was the performance of Steve Ruskin and Art Sederbaum, both of whom were undefeated. Other fine players were Ed Pollack, Paul Lobel and Jim Hochfelder, and the doubles team composed of Ken Talesnick and Steve Weiss. Tennis BACK ROW: Mr. Friedman, Silverman, Blynne, Feld, Talesnick, Ruskin, Weiss FRONT ROW: Hochfelder, Lobell, Sederboum, Goldberg, Pollack. 75 FRONT ROW: Kellner, Perlo, Wenz, Steinberg. BACK ROW: Abrohm-son, Ommetti, Boyer, Terebelski, Diekman. Cross Country Despite powerful opposition, this year's Cross Country team ran well and had an outstanding season. Ricky Steinberg was our best man in this sport, which consists of running two and a half miles over a grueling course at Salisbury Park. Others who showed superior merit were: Phil Bayer, Harry Furrer, Glenn Terebelski, Eugene Kowalczsyk, and Peter Gabriel. 76 Mr. Hawthorne, Coach Coach Sobetto As this edition goes to press, the track team is starting its first week of practice. It appears to be a strong squad which may capture sectional laurels. Standouts on the team are expected to be: Rick Steinberg, Mitch Kovacs, Don Mayland, Carl Magnuson, Len Piner, and Charles Witte. Track FRONT ROW: Wascowiok, Genalo, Ammetti, Brooks. SECOND ROW: Heidicker, Mayland, Kliegerman, Meiselbach, Pueplo, Steinberg, Leo. It was the good fortune of the Class of '61 to have Mr. Edmund Berridge as its advisor. By planning, preparing and attending all of the class's functions, Mr. Berridge aided the class in attaining a very successful year. He was constantly accessible, so that all students could discuss their plans and problems with him. More than to any other individual, the Class of '61 owes a debt of gratitude to Mr. Berridge for providing the joys and experiences of their Senior year. 90 Roger Dennis, President Marion Schweisguth, Vice President Senior Officers To those who lead all success is due. This idea can well be applied to our Senior Officers, under whose capable leadership our class thrived. With Roger Dennis at the helm, aided by Marion Schweisguth, Vice President, Fern Marquiss, Secretary, and Steven Ruskin, Treasurer, the Class of '61 met with outstanding success.
