Wfe have, of couise, received an education, the essential of modern life. In addi- tion to education, and perhaps even more impor- tant, a new viewpoint has been given to us. A beginning of maturity, a practical outlook, perhaps a small bit of wisdom has been instilled in us. Each one of the many varied Mepham activities has left its mark -- and built character while do- ing so. Our yearbook will indeed be a treasure chestn to each one of us. In it there lies a major portion of our lives. Wfhen we turn the pages, the good times, the humorous times, the sad times, all come back to us. Every portion of our lives for three years, the aspects that have moulded us into what we are now, are shown to us in this great mirror, our yearbook. And in that mirror we can see re- flected too the fine opportunities that lie ahead in life waiting to be used to write another, larger, book. 4- S111k1l' 01114 11-111-11111111 1-1-1111-S1-1111, 111 L1 Q11-.11 1-X11-111, 1111- 111-111-1111, 11111. .11111 11-ssous 11'1- 11111 1- f.1111L1k1. 11 is 1111111Q 111.11 111- 8111111111 116511111111 11 111 1111111' 111'O1111' 11110 11.111' 2111-11 111 111l111Nl1XLN 111 11 Q1-111111 - - - 1 .1I1L1 111 111111 1. Our individual district would never be able to function without the excellent direction given to it by the Board. In the coming years, the responsibility placed on the Board of Education will continue to increase at the tremendous rate it has in the last few years. The number of new schools is already an amazing figure, and it is expected that this num- ber will rise even higher. We, as the students of Mepham High School, probably owe the greatest amount of thanks to the Board. We donit get many chances to ex- press our gratitude, and so we therefore take this opportunity to offer our sincere thanks to Mr. Raymond D. Hansen, President, Mr. Clement J. Truitt, Vice President, Mr. Frank W. McCar- thy, Mr. Edward Lehman, Mr. Charles Schadt, Mr. Frederick Froelichg Mr. John B. King, Mr. Charles A. Braun The year 1960 was the second year in which Cen- tral High School District Number Three has consisted of five schools, two senior and three junior high schools. Such a complex system requires level-headed leadership and firm administration. Mr. Julius C. Braun, Principal of the District, has more than ex- ceeded the demands of such a taxing responsibility. Mr. Braun came to Central High School District Number Three from the high schools of Buffalo three years ago, succeeding Mr. Calhoun as Principal of the District. At that time the district was comprised of the Merrick and Jerusalem Junior High Schools and the Mepham Senior High. Yet the next year, when the Sanford H. Calhoun High School and the Grand Avenue Junior High School were opened, Mr. Braun's untiring efforts were best displayed, for on his capable shoulders lay the burden of staffing and administer- ing these two new schools, Our most important years are spent at high school, for the future of our country depends on the nation's youth. Mr. Braun, as Principal of our District, has inspired our students to new heights with hopes for even greater achievements in the coming years. His philosophy concerning the development of potential citizenship will be of even greater significance in the tremendous expansion of our district expected in the years to come. Mr. Braun has always believed that the education of our youth will lead to a better- informed citizenry to meet the growing demands of our democratic way of life. Mr, Ralph K, Alger, Miss Agnes J. Berwind, Mr. Harold McCourt, Supervisor of English Director of Instruction Director of Pupil District Staff Dr. Frederick H. Stunt, Administrative Assistant and Curriculum Personnel Services It would be impossible to have a successful school year without the indispensable work of the administration staff. It is through the staffs control that lNIepham is able to function at its known high standards. Mr. Eugene E. Hallenbeck, administrative assistant, has worked for more than twenty years in the district. He has served in many capacities, including that of principal of Mepham High School. Dr. Frederick H. Stunt, also administrative assistant, was Principal at our school from 195-l to 1958. He is still well-known to Mepham students. The staff also includes lN1r. Harold lXIcCourt, lVIiss Agnes Berwind, and Mr. Ralph K. Alger. All the mem- bers keep the educational system running smoothly and efliciently. Mr. Eugene E. Mr. Gerald Tarbell - Assistant Principal One of the most important, and most active members of a school faculty is its assistant prin- cipal. Mr. Tarbell has been an interested and efficient principal and has effectively handled stu- dent affairs at Mepham. Mr. Tarbell has been in Mepham for seven years. During this period he has advanced quickly, teaching physics for four years, serving as assistant principal for Jerusalem Avenue Junior High School, and starting as our assistant principal in September, 1958. He has definitely stood out in this position during the past two years. Mr. Tarbell is known in Mepham for his effi- cient and masterful manner of handling any situa- tion that might come up. He can usually be found at sports events and is greatly interested in extra- curricular as well as scholastic activities. Mr. Tarbell is a great asset to Mepham, and will be increasingly valuable and indispensable in the years to come. Mr. Herman Tennant - Principal There are several factors that make a good school stand above other schools. The teachers, the students, and most of all the principal are responsible for the schoolis reputation. Behind every successful group and organization there is a leader. As everyone at Mepham will vouch, Mr, Tennant is an excellent leader. Before one can become a leader of a band, he must First acquaint himself with the different instruments in the band. A principal in a school must Hrst be acquainted with the sub- jects that the school offers and the extra- curricular activities. Mr. Tennant fills the bill. Mr. Tennant was graduated from Hobart College located in Geneva, New York. He taught at Newton Falls, New York. Our prin- cipal displayed his athletic skill as he held the position of coach. He was also assistant prin- cipal at this school. In 1935 he came to District Number 3, and was one of the original staff. He rose to the head of the Mathematics De- partment and during the YVar was assistant principal for 2M years. Mr. Tennant is ae- quainted with all facets of teaching and learn- ing. The loudest voice in the football field most likely will be Mr. Tennant's. He encourages stu- dents to develop their talents to the best of their ability. We at Mepham High School are proud to say that Mr. Tennant belongs to Bfepham. X AA is -rv' MR. ACKERLEY MR. ALDERFER MR. BERGAMINI MISS AEMISEGGER MISS B.-XRTELS MR. BERRIDGE Faculty NIR. Ramel, whether paint- ing a staircase in the dingy sand room, setting up flats on the stage, hunting for props or rnemonzing lines, have contributed two major productions and a G.O. drive play this year. I ,wg Advisor: Dr. Ritchie There is never a dull moment downstairs in the band room. From early morning section rehearsals, until the late afternoon individual practice sessions, the band room is alive with the sound of music. Throughout the football season, the band sparked half-time at the foot- ball games with its precision marching and intricate formations. The snows of winter brought the band back inside the school where its services were offered at pep rallies, assemblies, and Career Day. The high- light of the winter season was the outstanding Winter Band and Orchestra Concert. Spring fever did not have a chance to slow down the speedy pace of the band. Each member worked diligently for the music events which lay ahead - the spring concert, the Spring Arts Festival, the Pop Concert and the Skull and Bones presentation of Say, Darling. Attired in new uniforms, the band stepped out in hne form in many local parades. The final ap- pearance of the band will be at graduation, at which time it will lend dignity to the ceremony. Under the baton of Dr. Ralph Ritchie, the band has certainly made noteworthy contributions to both the school and the community. FRONT: Grebinar. Christmas was one of the busier seasons for the Choir, Besides giving Mr. H. Walton Alderfer, Director two outstanding Christmas Concerts before standing room only audi- '- ences, the Choir participated in the Freeport Elks' Club Memorial rf: in Service. It also sang for the New York City Christmas shoppers in the ,Wm KLM Airlines Building on Fifth Avenue. The annual spring Choir Production was marked by a tour of folk songs of foreign lands as well as a tour of American folk songs, show tunes, and patriotic songs. Climaxing a highly successful year, the Choir journeyed to Eastern Long Island for several appearances at local high schools. Under the able direction of Mr. H. The second type of meeting, in which the club advisor, Mr. Long, plays a large role, is devoted to learning about the sci- entific side to hi-fi. At this meeting, the various aspects of different retypes and equipment are discussed and often criticized. There seems to be a great future ahead for this new Mepham activity. This has been one of the most construc- tive years for a very diligent Mepham or- ganization, the Science Club. The club is one which greatly aids the many students interested in biology, physics, or chemistry. Each member gets a chance to construct a project of his own and present it to the club during a meeting, Also, the Science Club is often the method through which students learn of and participate in vari- ous opportunities for scholarships, includ- ing the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. The Club is noted for the fact that it takes several trips during each year to science institutes. There has been a new plan in the Sci- ence Club this year to have more joint projects. The Club was divided into sev- eral groups and worked on their group projects with science teachers. This plan has proved very helpful and will probably be used in the coming years. It is the duty of the Audio Visual Squad to take these highly important films. The Audio Visual Squad also is in charge of all projection equipment in the auditorium programs and the individ- ual classroom films. Under the able direc- tion of Mr. Fite, the Audio Visual Squad has rendered invaluable services to Mepham High School this year. One of the most heard from Mepham ac- tivities is the P.A. Club. The members of this club are heard at all Mepham home games. They are the announcers at the foot- ball and basketball games. At wrestling tournaments and track meets the boys can also be heard. Their other official job is keeping the scoreboard. This year's group of announcers included Al Parisse, Fred Schwartz, Steve Bertuglia, Warren Stillwell, Henry Klein, Eric Sivin, Art Sederbaum and Richie Kaufman. Our record in this sport is superior, the goal of many teams on Long Island is to beat Mepham just once. However, the op- posing teams rarely get the chance and Mepham's record stays right on top. This year, our record, though still superb, has had a couple of dents in it. We had the unfor- tunate bad luck to lose two of our matches, though each loss was by the close margin of one point. However, with the exception of these two mistakes, our reoord is perfect. This year Mepham again participated in the SSAL tournament. Mepham's matmen distin- guished themselves in this post season activity. In the Section l Championships, twelve boys qualified for the Nassau County wrestle-offs with Furrer, Piven, and Werner as weight class cham- pions. Coach Kenneth Hunte has now been coaching the Wrestling Team for two years. The team re- mains as the representative of our most successful sport, attesting to the excellent job of Coach Hunte, Next year promises to be an even better season, as the wrestling talent in our school is growing even stronger. Basketball This year's basketball team, under the direction of Coach Douglas Gerek, was one of the best produced by Mepham in recent years. The team played its best at all times: however. due to the keen competition in our league, we wound up with a record of seven vic- tories and nine defeats. The interest of lNlepham's student body in this sport was evidenced by the well filled stands of avid rooters at every game. Those who attended the games saw a team paced by Dick Mahland who scored an average of almost twenty points per game. Stu Krosser and Marty Cammarata also were returning veterans of last year's team. Two juniors, Eddie Pol- lack and Phil Gianfrancisco, rounded out the starting quintet. These two. along with Roger Dennis and our able junior varsity. will form the nucleus of next yearls team. lVhile basketball is eclipsed by wrestling as the winter sport here at Mepham, there is much to be said of our basketball team which gave its all even in the face of a grueling schedule. -.f XQSQEI Coach Gerek FRONT ROW: Seigel. My Mr, Troisi, A dzfisor Senior Advisor Winston Churchill once said, 'gNever have so many owed so much to so fewfl In speaking of Mr. Troisi one might paraphrase the quotation to read, HNever have so many owed so much to one individualf, Our senior class could never have functioned this year as it did without the aid and guidance of Louis Troisi. Supervising senior sales, coordinating sports functions, promoting the proms and dances - in all extracurricular activities Mr. Troisi has worked untiringly with our class ofhcers to help them achieve a successful senior year. llore- over, Mr. Troisi has always been willing to help make posters or sell tickets for his class. As was said before, the class could not have functioned without hirn. Nick Speranza, President Qi-lk i ft,-Y ily!! ik' 'LT l -S 3, l fi K J' Karen Potter. Secretary Dave Bayer, Tfgamfef Class Officers Nick Speranza has been one of the best presi- dents Mepham has seen in a long time. lt is truly amazing how much work this boy has done single-handedly. Though burdened with many extracurricular activities, Nick has had time to do an excellent job as president. Stephanie Carroll has also performed an ex- ceptional -iob as our vice-presitlvrit, Sllf' prow-rl to be of great assistance to both Niflg and Mr, Troisi. and greatly aided our class, The very able and efhcient secretary of the senior class this year was Karen Potter. She worked perhaps harder than anyone else, pre- paring all paper work for our ofhcers. Dave Bayer, one of our most outstanding ath- letes and students, was our treasurer for the year. He has done a very competent job and will be remembered by his fellow classmates as a hne companion and a good officer. Stephanie Carroll, Vice-President 'Nag-k C! SEATED: Waswo, Jablow, Cohen, Kresky, Tax, Droisen, Rossomano, Cobucci, Greenberg, Proce, Altamore, Martin, Zeller, Muller, Gallivan, Herman, Grebinar. STANDING: Senior Planning Committee This year's Senior Planning Committee handled all the main activities of the school year. Led by the sen- ior officers and their extremely capable advisor, Mr. Troisi, the Committee co-ordinated three highly suc- cessful dances capped by the best-attended Senior Prom in recent years at Mepham. Besides co-ordinating these events, the Senior Plan- ning Committee also acted as the overseer in other facets of school life. Throughout the year, the Senior Planning Committee has played a major role in events here at Mepham. SEATED: Proce, Cobucci, Kresky, Chapin, Zeller, Despo- sati, Pann, Martin, Hodgeson, Herman, Buckley. STAND- ING: Rossomano, Amelingmeier, Tax, Fleming, Cotgreave, Kellner, Cammarta, Schwartz, VVasser, Calandrillo, VVeiss- koff. Senior Sales Committee The Senior Sales Committee has been the hdrixing force behind the student body this year. lts vast amount of working spirit was best displayed at the football games, where neither rain, nor sleet, nor hail could prevent these steadfast members from braying the storm to serve hot dogs and coffee to the specta- tors. The winter sports season found the committee members in the gym scouting through the bleachers for prospective customers. The Senior Sales Committee has definitely accounted for one of the more consid- erable contributions to a highly successful Class ol 1960.
