Behind this proud tradition is a continuing history of dedicated teaching and level-headed administration. In both of these capacities Mr. Tennant has served with distinction. By fairness, integrity, exceptional ability, and plain hard work, he has advanced the ideals for which Mepham stands. The Class of 1959 is pleased to have this opportunity to express its appreciation. With affection and respect we dedicate the 1959 Treasure Chest to our Principal, Mr. Herman A. Tennant. Executive Section Mr. FRANK W. Me- Mr. RAYMOND D. HAN- Mr. CLEMENT J. TRUITT CARTHY, President SEN, Vice President Board of Education Mr. JOHN MAHAN, treasurer, Mrs. IRENE T. SMITH district clerk. Mr. BERNARD MORRIS, attorney Mr. MICHAEL ]. FARINA Mr. CHARLES SCHADT Mr. JULIUS C. BRAUN Principal of the District The rapid expansion of the educational facilities of Central High School District Number Three has made the difficult problems of administration even more complex. As Principal of the District, Mr. Julius C. Braun has surpassed the challenge and increased the efficiency of the District’s Administration. The year 1959 saw the opening of both the Stand-ford H. Calhoun High School and the Grand Avenue Junior High School. When we consider what this means in terms of staffing, organizing, and supervising, we have a small idea of the responsibility which is upon Mr. Braun’s capable shoulders. What makes his accomplishments even more impressive is the fact that he finds the time to participate in many community and professional organizations. Mr. Braun gives of himself fully and without stint in order that the youth of our community may be better served. Education is the process by which we grow in mind and spirit. Education serves not only to fit us for a place in life but to develope us into well-rounded citizens. We cannot overlook the importance of these years at Mepham, or forget the fine people who made them possible. The future of our Nation depends upon the education of our youth. To such outstanding educators as Mr. J. Braun we owe a debt of gratitude for what our Nation has become and for the greater promise of the future. Mr. Eugene E. Hollenbeck, Administrative Assistant Mr. Eugene E. Hallenbcck has devoted more than twenty years of his life to serving the ideals of Mepham. During the war he was selected to fill Mr. Calhoun’s position as Mcpham’s Principal. Throughout his distinguished career he has worked diligently to give the youth of this community the best possible education. Dr. Frederick H. Stunt, Administrative Assistant Dr. Frederick H. Stunt is well known to students at Mepham where he was our Principal from 1954 to 1958. In the course of his career at Mepham, which began in 1937, he has taught general science, physics, and mathematics. In 1949, he became director of student personnel services. Dr. Stunt holds his degree from Teachers’ College. Columbia University. Mepham is very proud of Dr. Stunt. He was one of the original staff in this district. He rose to the head of the Math Department, and during the War was Assistant Supervising Principal for 2 J 2 years, during the absence of Mr. Calhoun. A business teacher, he put the methods he taught to use, organizing the senior class activities. His determined chin reveals an infectious drive and spirit which inspired the Class of ’59 to put its full effort not only into the prom and dances, but also into the less glamorous hot dog and candy sales at football and basketball games. The thanks and congratulations of the entire student body go to Mr. Cortale. Mr. Michael J. Cortale AT RIGHT: A senior class worker discusses ticket selling strategy with Mr. Cortale. On any day from three to four Mr. Cortale could be found in the lobby ready with dance tickets, book covers, or sound advice. BELOW: A senior sales committee member offers a candy bar to Mr. Cortale who supervised refreshment sales at all Mcpham sporting events. 36 Majority Leaders Margaret Zraly Vice President Patricia Chandler Secretary Serve the People John Ryan Stuart Kerevcsky Treasurer Our president, John Ryan, is widely known for his wrestling prowess and respected for his friendly disposition. He has worked tirelessly on the planning of senior class dances and programs, but he has never been above helping to percolate the coffee at football games or sell tickets to the various Mepham functions. House Planning Committee Sandy Rutkoski and Joe Calandrillo pose here before dashing off to assemble their committee members. House Steering Committee The Senior Planning Committee was the working task force for the class of ’59. The committee was composed of interested and active Senior Class members. Throughout the year the group planned and supervised dances and other Senior Class activities. Their jobs began weeks ahead of each event, as they planned the decorations and other parts of each activity. They were also present at clean-up after each event. House Finance Committee The Senior Sales Committee purveyed hot dogs, coffee, candy, and soda at athletic contests to earn money for the Class of ’59. Whether carrying coke cases to the football field, or canvassing the bleachers with refreshments at basketball games, they showed a working spirit that benefited the entire student body. Mary Ellen Mitchell and Gene Miller were a liaison between the class officers and committee members. Buccaneer JUNIOR EDITORS: (Top to Bottom) Droisen, Gottlcib, Jablow, Diamond, Eisen, Sivin, Mazer, Carroll, YVcisskoff, Rossomano, Schwartz. Working within the familiar format of the Buccaneer, the editors and the advisor of Mepham’s newspaper attempted to improve the “Bucs” quality and vary its content. Mr. Clifton Tatro, in his first year as advisor of the Buccaneer, guided the newspaper to a second place ranking in the Columbia Scholastic Press Conference competition. The typical issue was conceived at a conference of Mr. Tatro and the Editor-in-Chief Leonard Chazen. Soon the page editors were posting their assignments, and a stream of Buccaneer staff members, checking the details of a newspaper operation, was passing through Mr. Tatro’s homeroom. After the articles were typed and rechecked by the editors, they were sent to the printers to be set in type. Preliminary copies or galley proofs of the issues were then sent back to the Buccaneer staff to be scrutinized for printing errors. The reset type was taken to the Mepham print shop, where the newspaper was actually printed. Among this year’s innovations were regular editorials, a newspaper-sponsored prose writing contest, and increased use of pictures.. 82 Trcasure Chest A new advisor and a new printing method brought changes to the 1959 edition of the Treasure Chest. Mr. James A. Ackerley, who took charge of Mepham’s yearbook in September, made skilled use of the increased flexibility offered by the offset printing process. This edition employs pictures as its primary device for telling the story of the school year, with copy only supplementing or explaining the pictures. Michael Goodkin, editor-in-chief of the Treasure Chest, headed the yearbook staff. He supervised his cadre of editors as each department in turn accomplished its tasks and met its deadlines. In September, the business committee under Lorin Swagle and Michael Penzelle, began selling ads. As Layout editor, Sue Sloman went to work with her staff on the arrangement of pictures and copy layout. The Sales committee under Peg Zraly and John Ryan, were taking orders for the Treasure Chest. Literary editor, Lenny Chazen, was in charge of copy; Marcia Gromet headed the Blurb committee. The outstanding artwork in this book was created by Steve Adams. Other faithful workers were Ellen Dicker and our Paste-up Editor, Merry Schiff. Merry made the largest single contribution toward the success of this Treasure Chest. International Relations Club The I.R.C. as it is commonly referred to in Mep-ham, is the school’s largest club and is composed of approximately one hundred and fifty students. The specific purpose of the club is to provide for better understanding throughout the complicated world in which we live. The members of the club delve into complex in the area of foreign affairs that confront us today. Such problems as segregation and Red China’s admission to the United Nations were discussed and debated. The celebration of Christmas throughout the world and the functional purposes of the United Nations were also presented by various monthly committees. Highlighting this year’s accomplishments was the visit by two foreign exchange students. Ida Bossi and Gus Fiakos of Italy and Greece respectively, discussed freely their country and supplemented these talks with pictures and slides depicting their colorful life abroad. Joanne Friedlander and Michael Good-kin were the fortunate hosts. The officers included Laurin Laderoute, president; Bob Temple vice president; Mark Chasin, treasurer ; Lcnard Chazen, program chairman. Mr. Jocoby. Future Teachers of America In the two years it has functioned under a national charter the Future Teachers of America has an excellent record of achievement. The paramount purpose of the club is to induce high school students to enter the teaching profession and to make them conscious of their future responsibilities as educators. Among this year’s programs, was an informative panel discussion among the teachers who have recently participated in the Fulbright Program. Miss Boken and Miss Perlman ably introduced the stu- dents to the European outlook on education. An informal tea was held in October to welcome many of the new teachers in Mepham and a special Christmas party was enjoyed by all F.T.A. members. This year the Agnes J. Berwind Chapter of the Future Teachers of America welcomed Miss Jules Boken as their new advisor with her industrious leadership to guide them, the officers and members passed a successful year. It appeared at the Hotel Statler, in New York City, for the International Convention of School Business Officials. The concerts included a Senior Assembly, the Honor Society inductions, and the Freeport Elks Club Memorial Service. The two Christmas Concerts the Choir presented were given to packed houses. Last November T.V. viewers, who had the good fortune to see the Pirettes march and dance in the Macy’s Day Orchestra Parade, also became acquainted with the group. The thirty girls who participated in this organization toiled during morning and after-school practices, under the direction of Miss Noller. While we are proud of the entire team, special recognition goes to Charlie Brucia, outstanding at center, Ray Nickla, who was one of two guards picked as Nassau County All Scholastic, and powerful A1 Anderson who turned in a fine job at tackle. BACK: Pearsall. Weiners, Ravera, Friedenson, Breslin. Muller, Lee Thomas. Weinman. Von Freymann, Castano, Kiviranna. 2nd: Packard. Smith, Hansen. Wrestling This year’s wrestling team carried on the school tradition of being one of the top teams on the island. Furrer at 119, Piven at 125, Weiners at 137, Karp at 151, Sirota at 161, Nickla at 205, helped to win the South Shore Section 1 Championship. Mepham won the South Shore Section 1 by a score of 125; the nearest school was Massapequa with a score of 76. Mepham won the Nassau Country championship with a score of 77, the closest school to Mepham was Calhoun with a score of 55. Furrer, Weiners, Karp, Sirota, Nickla were Nassau County Champs. Mepham was proud to have three Long Island Champs. They were Sirota, Weiners, and Furrer. Mepham’s wrestling team ended the season with a record of 17 wins and 1 loss. Which was a wonderful finish to a great season. Sirota Karp Werner Basketball It was Mepham’s misfortune this year to have a good team in a very strong league. Our hoopsters established a 9—7 record, but missed the Section One Playoffs by the scant margin of one game. A measure of league strength is the fact that the three teams ahead of us in the standings were all winners in the Nassau County Playoffs. The most outstanding player on this year’s team was forward Bill Johnson. Bill consistently set up the plays and proved himself a real team player. Other outstanding contributions were made by seniors Ruege, Gunderson, and Pta-cek. Returning lettermen are Stuart Krosser and high scorer, Dick Mahland. FIRST ROW: Cammarralta, Humberg, Johnson, Ptacak, Seigel, Rcugc. SECOND ROW: Wasser, Mahland, Gunderson, Rose. THIRD ROW: Henneshaem, Krausser, Anderson. Ill Cross Country Hombach, Coach Murphy, Steinberg, Rogers, Ryan, Pivan, Loop, Daly. Cross Country Over the highways and biways can be seen trotting along our cross country team. With Coach Murphy lending a guiding hand, Mepham’s Harriers finished the season with eight wins, two losses, and one draw. The highlight and sparkle of the team proved to be Vinney Daley who placed ninth in the New York State meet at Colgate. This achievement set a new record for Mepham’s Cross Country Team. 112 ■■ Tennis TOP: Ruskin, Rothbart, Schwartz, Zimmer, Guthman. Alexander, Ccdcrbaum, Temple. FOREGROUND: Rosenthal, Mr. Friedman. Tennis This year’s tennis team gained valuable experience and practice under their new coach, Mr. Friedman. Mepham’s racketeers made outstanding showings in the league matches during the fall as well as the national sectionals during the spring. Outstanding senior netmen included Billy Gutman, Eddie Rosenthal, Peter Schwartz, Bob Temple, and Jerry' Zimmer. These boys can surely be proud of the letters they have won this season. Richard VVeisskofT has also proved himself an up and coming junior, who is sure to make a “racket” in the tennis world next year. 113 FRONT ROW: De Hart, Hansen, Ruege. Ptacck. Gleason, Quiney, Kiviranna. SECOND ROW: Naples. Rubin, Krosser, Mahland. Siegel, Werner. THIRD ROW: Grecco, Liston. Johnson, Periera, Dennis, Wiener. Basebal This year’s nine as we go to press is shaping up well. It looks to be Henno Kiviranna, as catcher; Charlie Ruege, at first; Ronnie Ptacek, at second: Roger Dennis, as shortstop; Dave Bayer at third: Jim Siegle in left field; John Quiney in center field: Bill Johnson in right field; and Dave Hansen as pitcher. Two sophomore that appear to have promise arc Meiselback and Dennis. 114 Track At the time of printing of the Treasure Chest, our track team appears to be on the way to another highly successful season. Since most of last year’s team remains intact, this year’s team is a strong one. In the initial two meets of the campaign, Coach Sabetto’s athletes vanquished their adversaries, Masscpcqua and Uniondale by lopsided scores. Our primary opposition in Section 1 of the South Shore Athletic League would seem to be the cindermen of Lawrence and Oceanside. Among the best of those returning from last year are: Dick Tier and Bob Kroger, sprinters: Art Temple a threat to the school pole vault record; Ed Kennedy, our top hurler; Dave Browner; a possible fifty foot shot putter; Ron Von Freymann, our best 440 yard runner and Charlie Rice, holder of the school broad jump record. Thus it must be obvious that this a well balanced and formidible team. FRONT RO W: Machina, Friedenson, Browner. Von Freymann. Ray, Malfatti. Lazcre. Temple. Creveling, Hanscom. This year, once again, Mepham shared honors with no one, as we came out on top.
