He is Mr. Sanford H. Calhoun. It is with mixed feelings that the faculty, the community, Mepham alumni, and students contemplate Mr. Calhoun's retirement from his position as Principal of Central High School District Number Three. We are sad to see our schools lose such a dedicated chief administratorg we are happy that he will be able to enjoy a well earned retirement from public school workg we are very thankful that it has been our good fortune to have this dynamic leader in our school system for twenty-two years. immediately after he was graduated from St. Lawrence Vniversity. Mr. Calhoun began his career in education as principal and teacher at Coeymans, New York. For thirty- one years he has continued to serve in the public schools with a sincerity of purpose and an integrity of principle which have been admired by all who know him. After four years at Coeymans High School and five years at Sag Har- bor High School, Mr. Calhoun came to our communities as the principal of the newly organized Wellington C. Mepham High School. lloth his organizational skill and his adaptability were well tested as Mepham classes were held for two years in the old school --a six room wooden building on Bedford Avenue in Bellmore. Here the boys, by moving their feet under the desks. could shake a classroom until the win- dows rattled. Here Mr. Calhoun's attention to detail was evidenced hy his standing at the door at dismissal to make certain that every student was taking books home. I 926 I 935
