She has been proud of many things during that time. The reputation this school has developed throughout the area and the state gives her a special sense of honor. Mrs. Hanrahan is also proud of the qualified staff, its ability to work with the students, and the systematic management and organization within the school. One of her firm beliefs is that leadership is not accomplished by one person. The 1987-88 yearbook staff proudly dedicates this book to a leader we will look up to for many years- Mrs. Peggy Hanrahan. 0= Cardinal 4 vV Top Left: A Sophomore takes a cheek sample for Biology. Soon it would be dark, dark and cold. The Townshill family knew this, and thus they nervously sat around the table. Mrs. Townshill mopped her faced with a tattered tissue. Tori, Mandy’s little sister, sat playing with her blocks while Gretchen and Danny, the older children, paced across the room. They were all awaiting news about Mandy, for Mandy was missing. She was gone . . . . ” First place poem “Prophecy” by Sean Cowsert Excerpt: “A Shadow was cast upon the earth By He Who Would Not Die. His sword was named Catastrophe. His shield was called The Sky. He lay his blade upon the land And the sun sank into a boiling sea. He awoke the demons called the Winds And set their fury free . . . . ” First place essay “Art and Life” by John Hammink Excerpt: “On a visit to an art museum a few years back, I happened to notice a picture hanging in an out of the way corner of the room. The picture itself didn’t stick out particularly; the frame was jagged and worn, the tone of the canvas strikingly monotonous. Yet, I was still compelled, somehow, to look at it ” Second place short story “Et Ville-Atta” by Alan Balas Excerpt: “Sitting on the grass, she felt somewhat safer from the chilling, internal voice. She (Michelle) felt everything, she felt nothing. Feeling the quick, rhythmic thumping of her heartbeat, hearing the sound of hot blood being squished and squashed through the various chambers of her beating heart . . . . ” Second place essay “Wrhat They Don’t Teach You in Sex Ed. Maybe they even threw in some teenage pregnancy statistics or a video for good measure. And you left, maybe a little more informed with the technical stuff, but not really worrying about what would happen if you did have children. No one does — until they babysit . . . . ” Second place poem written by Scott Moorman Excerpt: “Feel the heat of the engine, The sudden onrush of ideas The shift into second gear Experience the freedom of the highway, the surge of adrenalin and thought The straightway for home . . . . ” MtM dti Honors (Section Top (Left to Right): Courtney Flanagan Mark Chiriboga Co-editor-Aoy Tomita Kendra Lima Co-editor-Jenny Chen Bottom (Left to Right): Jane Sung Shayne Garcia Tony Chen This section includes all the activities that keep the students of Mentor High on the actite road. Mentor High School plays sports one way (the only way)- to win. Each team competes against the GCC teams: Brush, Mayfield, South, North, and Euclid. Mentor's teams also compete against other teams outside of the GCC. All teams compete with the hopes of getting into regionals and then, for the best, competing at state. This year Mentor High expect to field several regional championships and to compete at state. Mentor High’s teams truly know the only way to compete. F o o t b Friday Knights The Mentor High Varsity Cardinal Football team finished the season with a record of eight wins and two losses. During the game morale is boosted by enthusiastic cheerleaders who charismati-cally lead the crowds in supportive cheers for .Mentor High’s football team. These groups: the band, the majorettes, the flagcorps, and the cheerleaders all contribute to the experience of a high school football game. Extras The Fighting Cardinal Marching Band Doing! Sext year's team is expected to improve as a team overall. =“ = A First After several years of co-ed soccer the team has finally been separated into two teams - a boys' team and a girls’. In 1987 MHS fielded its first girls’ soccer team. This team was made up of thirty girls ranging from sophomores to seniors. Mentor is one of the few Greater Cleveland Conference schools to have created a girls’ team. The first year of any sport is a year of experimentation. Not only did the team have to find where they stood in relation to their opponents, but they also had to determine their strong points and their weak points. This year’s coach, Mr. Sweeny, has started this process. Mr. Sweeny and the rest of the team worked on their weaknesses during the season by the baseball diamond in front of the student parking lot. Many of their weaknesses were resolved and with a larger and more experienced team greater success is expected next year. We at the MHS Yearbook wish the best of luck to this new team and its future. = • =C B o y s a s e t b a I 1 A Courtly Season Of Basketball The Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team has an overall record of six wins and nine losses to date. The program enables the student to choose any of S specific media classes and an independent study which can be used by the student for a more in-depth study of any of these areas. The Fine Art track has three full year courses which leads to a Senior Art Portfolio used by the student for scholarships and art school acceptance.
