Qfzalincl-Z Zola Devoting much time and effort to making this annual the best yet, the staff has set in p r i n t this year's people, places, and experiences. Following the customary procedures, this annual has pictures and script, however, their combination has given it a marked originality. Thus, following the t e n s i o n s of deadlines and the difficulties of decisions, your 1963 mem- ories are complete. Therefore as our cardinal takes his pen in hand, it is with extreme pleasure and re- lief that we present to you your annual. I edldcaftdaa ln appreciation for many hours of work, fun, and worry, we the Class of l963 wish to dedicate our Annual to a truly deserving person, In past years, many of us have become acquainted with her on the Highlights staff or in her U.S. History classesg a num- ber of us have only known her as the teacher whom we have often seen in the publications room after school. This year she again has spent many afternoons helping us prepare the l963 Cardinal Notes. l-ler service to this school as a teacher and advisor has been invaluable. MRS. DUBOIS, because you have helped so many students to enjoy both learning and working, we hope that this dedication may in some way tell you what thanks cannot fully express. 3 MAKE-UP STAFF Karen Ahlman Pat Cerveny Milt Deemer Jan Flanigan Lynn Frisbie Sue Koll Pat Lesler Kathy Ollila Cheryle Smith Nancy Southall Tom Swaine JUNIORS Sue Harrison Tom Nelson l 4 7?65 14mzuczZ Zag Editors SUE ANDREWS AND ROB FORBES Assistant Editors CAROL MEZZACAPPA AND JON VAUGHAN Make-Up Co-Editors JENNY JONES AND JERI KRUEGER Script Editor LINDA WOODROW Typing Editor LAURA VON SEGGERN Art Editor ANNALEE ILEN DA Business Editor TIM LEVSTIK SCRIPT Sue Burgess Mary Anne Hadden Fran Hansen Sherry Kohler Lee Mansell Arlene Marchal Sally Stewart Susi Sykes Betty Workman TYPING STAFF Nancy Klein Carol McCracken Pat Pruce Judy Schuster Linda Uhal ART Nancy Bleil Linda Dixon Joanne Korelec Lois Staudt BUSINESS Tom Atzberger John Day Ernie Hyppa Jon Pallant Chuck Rabel Pat Tewksbury Jim Wilkie Nancy Zedlar ':E3'-'I- L ,lg Hs ADMI IS RATION cgeezmtedenz' The Mentor High School Class of l963 is commended for the pro- duction of its excellent year book. Nita's warm smile readily re- vealed her charming and gracious personality. Her eagerness to learn about American ways made her a favorite with students and teachers alike. Delighting everyone with her stories, displays and native dances, Nita told of her homeland. She has enthusiastically par- ticipated in school activities. She was a Dean's assistant besides being a member of Student Council, Pep Club, and G.A.A. Also she was made an honorary member of the i962 Home- coming Court and N.H.S. ln her own words, Nita de- scribed her stay in Mentor: Believe me, l can talk of the winds of February, the lovely blooms of May, the falling leaves of October, or the first bl u sh of a September morn, but there is something in Men- tor that makes me especially happy. There is something in Mentor that strikes my mind and heart. lt is a feel- ing of loving your country - America - for the people like you are so gener- ous, understanding, loving, and help- ful. ln parting from Mentor, l am leaving with you all my love, and wherever I shall be, l shall view you from afar. Thank you very much for everything, X? Q fiijg SENIORS S5552 X JOSEPH SHUBER ewan Home 0bZfc'cew DOUGLAS PHILLIPS Under the leadership of the Senior Class Officers the class of '63 has had an exciting and successful year. Joe Shuber, President, fulfilled his duties with on enthusiasm that spark- ed the entire class. Pat Tewksbury handled the minutes, Rick Osborne kept track of our finances, and Doug Phillips did a fine job as Vice Presi- dent. These officers were responsible for several important activities. The first was the annual Homecoming Dance, This required the organization of committees and plenty of hard work. The work was fun, the dance was a success, and the entire Homecoming was unforgettable. The responsibility of raising money for the Annual and class gift was also theirs. They encourage the sale of parent sponsorships for the annual, set the pace for the magazine drive and sold Senior class pins. Other pro- jects were also planned, Much of the success of this Senior year is due to the leadership and en- thusiasm of our officers. PATRICIA TEWKSBURY is Quin? However, her activi- ties were not confined to academic chores. She found knitting, traveling throughout Switzerland and parts of Italy, and attending gay parties equally enjoyable. A year of wonderful memories was Shared by all upon Wini's return to Mentor. 7 an Spending the past summer abroad in Bremen, Germany, was Jenny Jones Mentor's first exchange student. Though in G e r m a n y only a few months, Jenny had many exciting ex- periences. Visiting other cities such as Cologne, Hamburg, and Berlin was fun as well as educational, however, she insists her favorite pastime was meeting people and learning their customs. Home again, Jenny has shown slides to interested groups. The de- scription of her trip has pleased many audiences. Ot its many responsibilities, the most important was the coordination of the activities of the entire student body. Several committees began to function immediately at the beginning of the school year. The organization of hall monitors and lunch line systems was the first action taken. A safety check for student drivers was then set up and permits issued. ln order to enforce the rules, the council then Scott Madsen, Treasurer chose a hearing committee. Finally, the representatives to the Area Student Council were elected. When these responsibilities were taken care of, the Council set up service and fund raising projects, These included the sale of A.F.S. Christmas Cards, the col- lection of Christmas baskets for needy families, and the sale of basketball pins. This year the Student Council again proved itself to be an active, worthwhile organiza- tion. Some of the services performed by the Key Club for the school are the raising and bulletin board in front of the school. The Key Club also works with the Kiwanis Club on the pancake breakfast each year. The most important example of the work done by the Key Club is the Larry Wheat Mem- orial. The Future Teachers of America is an organization for all those students who are interested in teaching os a ca ree r. Members lea rn much about teaching through their monthly meetings and var- ious projects. The main feature ot FTA meetings is usually a guest speaker from the field of education. Members can increase their k n o w l e d g e of teaching careers by questioning these speakers. One of the most important and in- teresting projects ot the club is substitute teaching. Members of the club often sub- stitute in the high school and at various elementary schools in the area. Students also help the teachers in our school by grading papers and doing other jobs that the teachers request. During American Education Week, FTA members give each teacher in the school an apple to show the students' appreciation for their work. Each spring those who have earned the required number of points for service receive their pins. To stimulate interest and d e v e lo p knowledge in the fields of medicine is the purpose of one of the most active organiza- tions at Mentor High School, the Medical Workers of Tomorrow. This year, field trips, medicol speak- ers, and movies accomplished this aim. Supervising the staff as they work to meet the deadline are advisor Mrs. Carol J. DuBois and Carol Mezza- cappa, editor in chief. Editors Betty Workman, Mary Anne Hadden, and Tim Levstik are assisted in the task of putting together the paper by a five-member editorial board. Those on the board, Linda Howie, Kay l-lostetler, Linda Hood, Tom Tagliamonte, and Tim Miceli, have worked the entire year gaining experience in all the phases of organizing the paper. Lois Staudt and Jim Vaughan contributed art work. Sherry Kohler served as head typist. Also gaining experience are the large number of students who report for the HI-LITES. They write up all news pertain- ing to sports, clubs and s p e cial school events. At the same time, they develop their sense of responsibility and increase their ease in meeting people. igddfly HM Returning this year to Mentor High is the Library Club. This club consists of about 75 members, all library assistants in either the main building or the annex. A training course is offered by this club in the duties of a library assistant. The club meets twice a month under the supervision of Mrs. Elizabeth Fulton, school librarian. An addition to the library has brought a greater amount of work for the members of this club. Officers are: Annabel Mus- selman, President, Judy Ross, Vice-Presi- dent, Pat Phelps, Secretary, and Henry Grund, Treasurer. This is a service organi- zation that it would be hard to get along without. Throughout the year various activities are supervised by the G. A. A. of- ficers along with Miss Lynn Shupe and Mrs. Patricia Whyte. These activities include volleyball, basketball, soccer, swim- ming, tennis and others. The G. A. A. Banquet and Formal are two special activities which highlight the school year. Rewards are given at the G. A. A. Banquet on the basis of the number of points received. The G. A. A. Formal is held during the Christmas season and is the only activity which boys may attend. The procedure for asking is reversed how- ever, when the girls ask the fellows. Members of the Girls' Athletic Association enter into many other activitiesg but, the real purpose of this club is to create good sportsmanship and team co-operation by offering various intramural sports. Regular council meetings aid in the revising of the G. A. A. Constitution. Each year, plans for activities, points and awards are carefully discussed and gone over to insure a smooth sche- dule, G. One of the largest classes in the high school this year s freshman class, needed competent leadership to get them off to a good start. They chose Dean Nicholas as their president. To assist him as vice-president they chose Beth Chase. Secretary was Marilyn Hoehn and taking care of the money was Joyce Horvath. Their biggest money-making project was the magazine drive. This ad dition to their treasury will be important in their junior and senior years, when they will have to pay for the prom and the yearbook, This year the freshmen were successful academically and athleticly and much is expected of them in the future.
