May 12, 1971, was designated Award’s Day for Mentone High School. Much disappointment prevailed as it soon became apparent that many clubs were not as active as in past years and awards previously given were abol- ished. However, the few who gained recognition were well received. John Nyenhuis attended the annual Presidential Classroom held in Wash- ington, D.C. and received the Reader’s Digest Award for the highest scholastic achievement in the class of’71. Special recognition was given to the many stu- dents who gave blood via the Red Cross Teen-Gallon Blood Program. It is believed that this the largest teen- group in the nation to present them- selves for this worthwhile cause.
