A Student A Goal A Reality Bulldog 1968 Mentone High School Mentone, Indiana CONTENTS Student Life 2 Students and Faculty 60 The Day Begins with Alert Students Preparin 3 Now the Day Begins The school day commences with wide-awake students engaging in all phases of aid, work, and discussion. Chorus exercises many singing voices for con- certs. Their chords resound throughout the building as re- ceptionists make daily rounds. Meanwhile others involve them- selves in routine assignments and cheerful conversation. 4 Class Variety Increases 6 Student Interest Enthusiasm in exercise brings great rewards. Reci- tation and contributing to class activities forms per- sonality patterns and fulfills goals. Many methods are sought and established to in- clude experimentation, par- ticipation, and vocational training. Patterns are not always strictly followed as daily life changes the course of study. 7 Stan and Rex discuss points learned at workshop. The Voice of Students Takes Action Student government provides not only a voice in school affairs but inspires stu- dents to become useful citizens. Coun- cil sponsored activities promote public awareness and urges those involved to accept responsibility with eagerness and intelligence. Officers add qualities of leadership and direct the council by expressing new thoughts learned. Younger students appreciate the efforts of the council at Christmas time. Serious Action for Future Is Begun Realization of goals re- quires diligence and patience. Careful study can be taken advantage of in a study hall, library, or just sitting in the hall. Teachers seize opportu- nities to prepare for classes during free time. All in all a quiet place and a desire to learn turns goals into realities. 10 Change in Routine Brings About Relaxation Class Participation Arouses 14 New Interests Students can exercise abilities and talents in psychology lab, shop class, speech class, writ- ing a theme, or merely allowing oneself to be influenced by class discussion. Thought and Exercise Complete Personalities The strain of competition, tension dur- ing assembly, and relaxation at play rehearsal help a student realize his goal of becoming a well-rounded per- son. As school years come to an end seniors realize that another goal is al- most within their reach. 17 Activities Broaden Horizons After school hours pro- vide many interesting and varied outlets for partici- pation. These may in- clude a class party, a dress rehearsal, candle- making, selling conces- sions, or being active in the Girl's Athletic Asso- ciation. 18 Students Travel; Being Courteous FRONT ROW, left to right: Carolyn Boggs, Susie Boggs, Mrs. Finney, Mr. Huffman, Karen Anglin, Diane Mc- Clone. Several clubs also traveled to view places of in- terest in their endeavors. Courtesy week, sponsored by the Student Council, brings to the forefront good manners, pleas- ing personalities and presenta- tion of the court climaxes the week. Karen Anglin and Lee Ritchey King and Queen of Courtesy 21 Stan and Mary Steve and Kathy Royal Couples Chosen for Gala Events Hoosier Hysteria court reigns over Mentone-Northfield game. Recognition Is Given to Outstanding Honor was given to notable students for merit shown during the school year. New achievements were added to the award list. For the first time in County Red Cross history, teen-age volunteers from one school donated over a gallon of blood. Annual awards were pre- sented to others. Golden M trophies for good citi- zenship were received by Cindy Whetstone and Stan Shand. Times-Union medals were given to Becky Hunter-- Math; Janis Hoffer--English; 24 Students Rudy Schwenk--Latin; Mike Whetstone--Science; and Kip Smith--Social Studies. Members from two clubs earned pins for services delivered in the community. Speech and Dramatics pin wearers are: John Romine, Terry Hammer, Pam Abbey, and Luanna Sarber. Future Nurses who received pins from Mrs. Davis are: Ma- donna Booth, Diane Igo, Sue Castellanos, Kathy Tridle, Donna Yarian, Bev Davis, Janet Barnhart, Rainelle Davis, and Luanna Sarber. Girl's and Boy's State Delegates: Kathy Boggs, Rex Bowser. Alternates: Janis Hoffer, Max Hubartt. 25 Seniors Make Their Goal a Reality Asa hectic week's planning draws to a close graduating seniors find the last minutes of their high school days ticking away quickly. Baccalaureate is the first of two events to terminate high school careers. Rev. Morris Hackworth, former teacher of Mentone seniors, delivered his sermon on The Drama of Decision . Commencement is portrayed as a beginning but graduates must leave school in order to begin. Lt. Governor Robert L. Rock presented the grad- uation address preceded by orations delivered by Vale- dictorian Kathy Boggs and Salutatorian Marsha Edwards. 27 Notes, Measures, and Unity Marching indicates one phase of instrumental music at Mentone High. Cadence strikes up to march in sum- mer parades and winter bas- ketball games. Pep band members add rhythm to the spirit of the fall pep rally. Entertaining student assem- blies is a spring project for the busy musicians. North Miami, Aubbeenaubbee, Laville, and John Glenn lis- tened to the concerts given. 28 Make Music Seniors found their ambition realized when they received their band sweaters. Recepients of the coveted John Phillip Sousa award, merit blankets, and baton were Dave Tibbets, Becky Hunter, and Kathy Boggs. 29 Voices Blend to Melodic tones can be heard floating from the upper hall as Mr. Bush steps on his podium and begins the weekly choral practice. The diligent efforts of Chorus members result in a suc- cessful winter concert. In addition to Chorus members, who received awards on their band sweaters, four senior Chorus members receive letters. They are: Mary Alvey, Karen Anglin, Kathy Tridle, and Cindt Whetstone. Musical sounds reverberate in after school hours from three special groups, The Mellodears, 4 Sharps and a Flat, and the Junior Triple Trio. 30 Form Harmony Not pictured, John Romine. Not pictured, Jacque Pritchard. 31 Batters Hit It Off as The crack of the bat, the smooth swishing of the ball, and the thrill of a safe call from the base umpire all lead to the excitement and joy of a baseball game. In order to hear all the fine sounds of success, the Mentone club finds that not only team spirit and team effort but also in- dividual development and per- sonal achievement must be earned. As each player takes his place around the diamond or steps up to bat, he realizes his goal of playing the game. WE OPPONENT THEY 5 Larwill 11 2 Akron 12 2 Pierceton 44 3 Syracuse 8 14 Milford 0 1 N.
