V 1965 BULLDOG Mentone Tolmo Burket Pride In Our Classes - 4 Pride In Our Activities - 1 8 I Pardon Our Pride. . . But We’re From M.H.S Pride In Our Friends - 38 Pride In Our Sports - 74 Students Faced Elections With Realism J. Bryan portraying Lucy Baines Johnson For the first time, the M. H. S. student body held a November election. Preceding the election a mock political con- vention was held with all the realism of a political campaign. Sophomore speech students portrayed the presidential candidates, members of the candi- dates' families, or close friends of the candidates. Members of the student body took part in the mock convention by displaying tneir enthusiasm for their favorite candidate. Music, confetti, and posters were everywhere. Following the convention, the senior govern- ment students took their places at the polls as sher- iffs, clerks, judges, watchers, challengers, poll book keepers, as well as the many other jobs of an election. The M. H. S. student body elected national, state, and county officers. They elected their homecoming representatives on the local ballot. The November mock election is only one way in which the students are learning to become better citizens of tomorrow. M. H. S. students taking part in the mock convention Voters And Ballots Were Closely Watched P. Truex, T. Teel, and R. Scott performing their duties as E. Secrist comes to vote. P. Murphy, D. Newton, D. Norris, and E. Murcia working at the polls. Slide Rules, Typewriters, And Books Read your answer on scale A, Kip! Prevailed Indoors How's your midnight oil Waste much paper, Lee? supply, Sandy? Slide rules, typewriters, and-books are all necessary utensils for advanced learning. The mathematics student who will enter college must be ac - quaintedwith the skill of manipulating the slide rule. Any student who needs to write themes, articles, and other material can greatly improve his work by becoming efficient in the use of the typewriter. It it were not for printed books and other educational materials, our learn- ing process would be greatly hindered. Books are the basic tools of our edu- cational process. These books must, however, be used and studied to be of value. The complexity of learning carried on within the building seems to have no effect on the beauty of nature, as can be seen especially in the serenity of the new fallen snow covering the school grounds. While Snow, Ice, And Bitter Cold Dominated Outside. Students Sponsored Teacher Appreciation And Mrs. Carter Days Mentone Grade and High School Faculty President Ryman Friday, May 1, was declared to be Teacher Appreciation Day by our student council president in a special program held in the gymnasium with all faculty and students in atten- dance. The president then introduc- ed Mr. Lester Davis, Warsaw Fresh- man High School Principal, as the main speaker of the morning. Mr. Davis, having been both a student and an educator, could look on both sides of a teacher-student situation and present a challenge for accepting re- sponsibilities as students andfaculty alike. One of the senior class sponsors, Mrs. Carter, was recognized by her class at a special Mrs. Carter Day ceremony, in honor of h e r retire- ment from the teaching profession after forty years of service. The event came as a total surprise to Mrs. Carter but not to Mr. Hurst and the entire class. A specially decorated cake and a gift certificate were presented to her by the class in appreciation for her work as the sponsor of the class of ' 65. The class was proud to have had Mrs. Carter as a sponsor. 7 Homecoming Highlighted Autumn Mardene Nellans and Sonny Nellans Judy Decker and Ernest Murcia The annual M . H. Mike is shown here during the period of judging the evening before the display of the project. Science Fair Was Well Attended Larry Hartman, a division winner, was kept busy explaining his exhibit about the human heart during public visiting hours. The Tippecanoe Valley Science Fair was climaxed by an awards program on the final evening of ex- hibitio n. General Chairman, William Longenbaugh, presented awards to first, second, and third place winners in each of the four divisions. Division winners were then announced and the final decision of the judges was revealed who the grand prize winner was. Division winners who were present with their projects were: Jeff Shoemaker, Chemicals in Photography ; Larry Hartman, Heart Action, Structure, and Function ; and Mike Hubartt, Einstein's Theory of Relativity . For the first time in the three years of the Fair the grand prize was awarded to a Mentone student. Mike Hubartt brought home the honors to MHS and continued on to the Regional Science Fair. 11 niors Hod Smoked Sizzling Steaks At Turkey Run The day following the senior excursion was another day to remember for Mike Hubartt. Mr. Joe Cerny, Vice-President in charge of sales, from Da-Lite Screen Cor- poration, came for Awards Day to honor Mike with a $1000 scholarship. This was the first scholarship given by Da-Lite Screen and Mike was the first choice. He was the highest ranking student in the class of 1965. Charcoaling process in progress! Awards Ceremony Climaxed Academic Year After much planning and wait- ing, the seniors loaded seventy steaks, nine cases of pop, and other supplies into two buses and left for Turkey Run State Park on May 10. Upon arrival some stu- dents rented bicycles and began strenuous exercise, while others began preparation for charcoaling the steaks for lunch. During the afternoon hiking, cycling, horse- back riding, and football were enjoyed by members and spon- sors of the class. Mr. Joe Cerny and M. Hubartt Times Union, Gold 'M’ Mr. Mason and M. The recipient is selected each year by the student council and faculty of the high school. This year for the first Student Council Held time the award was made on the basis of a tie, with Sherry Bryan and Mike Whetstone being the win- ners. Sherry was presented with her trophy at a later date because of her absence at the ceremony. Impressive Installation The student council held an in- stallation of 1965-66 officers at the completion of its year's activities. After President Ryman had given the report of the council to the stu- dent body, an impressive ceremony was then presented for the installa- tion of each officer who held a light- ed candle and wore a mantle whose color was symbolic of h i s office. The Annual Prom Was The 1963-64 prom was held in the Mentone gymnasium, which was beautifully decorated with lowered ceiling and false walls and featured an orchard scene. Apple trees in blossom, green grass, a patio, stars and a moon enhanced the scene for the setting of the queen Melissa Bechtol, and the king Lynn Parker. The Manchester College Band and a featured singer entertained the students and guests. 14 The Biggest Social Event Of The Year The 1964-65 prom was held at Cutter's Chalet in Fort Wayne. The feature of the evening was the superior music by the orchestra, the Beach Bums of Ball State University. The intermission marked the big event of the evening when Connie Smythe was crowned 1965 Prom Queen and Mike Whetstone 1965 Prom King by Melissa Bechtol, 1964 Prom Queen. 15 The Beach Bums Pardon Our Pride. . . In Our Activities Commencement We came to learn We leave to serve Sixty-five seniors of the class of '65 entered the gymnasium, preceded by Linda Kittrell and David Feldman, jun- iors, through an aisle formed by under- classmen, holding lighted candles, as the MHS orchestra played Pomp and Circumstance. Speeches were delivered by the vale- dictorian Michael Hubartt, and the salu- tatorians Judy Decker and Lorna Tridle. The address was given by Rev. Edward C. McCance, whose subject was The Secret of Successful Living. The class was introduced by Mr. Toll, principal, to Mr. Forbes, superinten- dent, who presented each student with his diploma. A reception was held afterward where the graduates were greeted and con- gratulated by friends and relatives. The flowers, white carnations tipped with green, the chosen class flower, were contributed by Mr. and Mrs. Ho- ward Horn in memory of their daughter, Jody. 18 The Greatest Moment Of All Budding Bandsmen Learned Much JUNIOR HIGH BAND ROW ONE: J. Harmony came only after many hours of practice and patient learning. The band achieved new goals in the presentation of more challenging pieces of music for the pa- trons of the school. During the past summer the march- ing band spent many hours of sole- wearing marching practice in prepara- tion for appearances at Mentone, Ak- ron, Warsaw, North Webster, Albion, Muncie, and Indianapolis. The march- ers also paraded last winter in Warsaw to open the Christmas Season. Special half-time entertainment was presented by the band at home basket- ball games during the year. A special feature enjoyed by the fans was the an- nual performance of the young twirlers who were instructed by drum-majorette Connie Smythe. 24 S. Tucker, S. Lewis, K. Romine, J. Zolman, L. Cox. Pep And Stage Bands Supported Morale The student morale was boosted through the efforts of pep and stage bands. The pep band appeared at pep sessions, rallies, and celebrations during the basketball season. Home- coming activities were provided with background music by the stage band. In its second year of existence the stage band became an active organi- zation by holding regular practices and having apart in the band tour and spring concert. BAND (continued) C. Ellsworth. In Our Friends We Came To Learn We Leave To Serve The senior year proved to be a busy one for each student. Through the hustle and bustle of senior pictures being taken, ordering graduation announcements, meas- uring for caps and gowns, and the many other activities of a sen- ior, a major decision in their lives was r e a c h e d --whether to go to college or directly into the working world. No matter what they do, they came to M. H. S. to learn, and they left to serve their fellowman. D. Barnhart . Secretary E. Murcia . . President B. Bryan.............Treasurer M. Whetstone. The cooks prepared the food which was furnished by the Lions' Club. After the refresh- ments everyone assembled in the gymnasium where they were led in some yells by the cheerleaders. Then all of the fans followed the fire engine, which escorted the basketball team, and a truck, which contained the pep band, through Mentone. Later everyone attended a sock hop in the gymnasium. Our school was well represented by the varsity and their untiring efforts on the basketball court. Action under the boards was fast and furious at all times with the Bulldog- jumpers covering the rebound area. Practice paid off as Mentone controlled most rebounds in important minutes of the games.
