THE BULLDOG Tippecanoe Valley School District Mentone School CONTENTS School Faculty Classes Seniors Underclassmen Sports Activities Grades Staff LUCKY LADY, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Robert O. Starner, Burket. ENTRANCES Mentone School has three entrances: front door breezeway 2 gymnasium doors STANDING PROUD We STAND PROUD of many things in our school. We are proud of the high quality students who attend, the interest they show in projects, their study habits in the library, their manners and behavior everywhere, their high scholastic grades. We STAND PROUD of the organizations and their fine accomplishments; FFA capturing titles and trophies; FHA making superior homemakers; our basketball team bringing glory and renown to Mentone; our colorful band brilliantly representing Mentone at ball games and pageantries all over Indiana. We STAND PROUD of our faculty. They are strong, helpful individuals, trying to prepare us for the future. Our teachers have magnificent qualities from which we can benefit. As you enter this book, looking at every picture and remembering the excitement, joy, and tears you shared, ask yourself, What have I contributed to M.H.S. to make it STAND PROUD? Chip Gast, editor 3 ROBERT M. FORBES Superintendent TIPPECANOE VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT Mrs. Martha Thompson, secretary BOARD OF EDUCATION Gale Creighton, Ralph Davis, Eldon Cumberland, Whitney Gast. Absent: Edward Bucher. UTTER'S SERVICE STATION, MENTONE LUMBER COMPANY 4 In the Nickolet National Forest close to Big Archibald Lake is a group of large pine trees that give off a sound similar to a pipe organ when the wind blows through the trees. I have stood and gazed to the top of those trees which have reached some 75 or 80 feet in the air. They have grown straight and tall because they are close together and each seeks light for further growth. So it is with a student: he grows mentally taller with competition and the desire for more light in the world of knowledge. JOHN FREDERICK Principal Mrs. Mary Louise Boggs, secretary Her laugh and smile are familiar. Give her a typewriter, a telephone, and a problem; she's content! RED COMB PIONEER FEEDS 45 MENTONE MARCHING BAND 1 The Bulldog Band started the season by marching at Albion in the Chain-of-Lakes parade. It captured third place and received a beautiful trophy. The next ostentation was in North Webster's Mermaid Festival parade. Again it captured third place and received another beautiful trophy. In July the band marched in the annual Pioneer Days parade in Warsaw. This was not a competitive parade; however, the band displayed an excellent exhibition of its skill. In August the band competed with over a hundred bands at the Indiana State Fair, which is one of the largest competitive parades in Indiana. Mentone's band was the only one from Kosciusko County. During the fall and winter the band presented shows in marching, making designs, and playing at the basketball games. The members also prepared for instrumen- tal contests, special functions, band tour, and the annual spring concert. The Bulldog Band is under the direction of Kenneth Bush. The drum major is Chip Gast, and the assistant drum majorette is Connie Smythe. The officers of the band are Fred Mellott, president; Mardene Nellans, vice-president; Ana Murcia, sec- retary; Steve Miller, treasurer; and Connie Smythe, librarian. 46 ROSTER OF MEMBERS FLUTES ALTO CLARINET CORNETS Cheryl Horn Beverly Hurst Judy Besson Martha VanGilder Dyrell Hackworth Lorna Tridle BASS CLARINETS Eddy Nellans Becky Knepper Chip Gast Diane Roberts Paulette Parker Linda Smith Connie Wallace Marilyn Taylor David Norris Connie East ALTO SAXOPHONE Russell Adams Sandra Nelson Vivian Hurst Dennis Feldman Elaine Man waring Renita Ring Judy Shand Donna Ring Connie Newton Fred Ryman Cynthia Ellsworth Philip Murphy CLARINETS Marlene Brallier James Driver Eldona Antonides Yvonne Rathfon Sandra Eckert Cynthia Rogers TROMBONES Sue Drudge Steve Miller Judy Decker TENOR SAXOPHONES Louise Cox Lowell Gruenewald Mike Orcutt Robert Adams Connie Smythe Gene Hughes Ken Romine Mardene Nellans Jay Tucker Steve Lewis JoAnn Mollenhour Jerry Zolman Jane Hostetler BARITONE SAXOPHONE Becky McDaniel Ted Shoemaker BASS Lloyd Bowerman Clair Taylor Toni Cleveland HORNS Betty Bibler Carolyn Warren PERCUSSION Beulah Holloway Ana Murcia Fred Mellott Cynthia Baker Earl Berkey Nancy Holloway BARITONES Steve Mellott Janet Goshert Mary Ann Peterson Anna Berkey Ernest Murcia Nancy Smelser STUDENT COUNCIL 9th Ronald Ward Becky McDaniel 10th Dave Norris Cynthia Rogers 11th Lynn Parker Eldona Antonides 12th Janet Rackeweg Jon Newcomb Mr. Frederick SPONSOR PROJECTIONIST CLUB James Bryan, Steve Lewis, Mike Orcutt, Larry Ervin, Wayne West, Clair Taylor, Jim Voris, Mark Hubartt, Bob Smith, Ernest Murcia, Bill Kindig, Bob Nelson, Danny McClone, Robert Adams, Larry Rohrer, Larry Eiler, Steve Olson.
