It seems as though it were only yesterday when we were roam- ing around the halls of M.H.S. As I was visiting some of my old friends this sum- mer, it suddenly dawned on me that ten years had lapsed since graduation. I first visited Reverend Larry Rackeweg, who is conducting revivals on Kena River. In Chicago I interviewed the president of Phillips Girdle and Corset Company. Lynn always did have the snap of things! In Nevada I called on Kay (Taylor) Logan. She and her husband have utilized the slogan Cheaper by the Dozen. From Nevada I headed for California. I found Bov Tucker and Gary Shepherd the leading beauticians in Hollywood. I hear they are pretty slick Operators with the act- resses. As I boarded a jet for Europe, I ran into John Feldman, a je pilot, who now resides on the Moon. In Paris I met Countess Shirley McKee, now engaged in bubble-dancing. Recently her bubble burst, and she was arrested for indecent exposure. My next visit was to the Sultan of Utopia, Wayne Burkey, surrounded by his harem of fifty beautiful girls. I returned to U. S. via Miami, where I visited socialite Becky Keirn in her pent- house with her pet snakes and alligators. In Washington, D.C., where lam with the F.B.I., I read about several of my classmates in the Washington Post . For meritorious service above the call of duty, Mitchell Tucker has received recog- nition for his service in the W.O.L.F. Club. (Worshipers of Lovely Females) Ruth Ann Huff has just been named Miss Rocket of 1971 in recognition of her expe- dition to the Moon. The great chemist, Max Flenar, is about to make an acid that will eat through any- thing. His problem now is what will he keep it in? Linda Perrin, renowned scientist, has astounded the world by proving the Einstein Theory to be false. Janice Davis has established the National Association for Bachelor Girls of America, dedicated to streamlining household chores in one-room apartments to ten minutes daily while reading a book. Dr. Linda Long and Dr. Mona Ross have discovered a sure cure for the common cold. Although the after-effect of the cure is a case of pneumonia, the cold is gone ! Aprominent local accountant, Tom Witt- kamper, recently invented a new style lawn mower in Hawaii. After many attempts to find a beverage that would not ferment, Lee Istok now has a drink that makes the old feel young and the young feel younger. Connie Huffman has invented a new baby- sitting kit including one skeleton key for all refrigerators and 2 bottles of sleeping pills for the non- sleeping little pills . Pam Hammer, first woman to enter the 500 mile race at Indianapolis, has just set a new record. Janet Capes, leading model at Rosenthal ' s in New York, has been eating for weeks to get in shape for this job. Linda Goshert, an explorer, was found nearly frozen to death in Alaska. Although she had six cans of heat, she nearly froze to death from lack of a can opener. The great sculpturer, Terry Rowland, is now working on his masterpiece for the Art Award. Larry Wise, owner of a flea circus, scratched himself to death. He had been leading a dog ' s life. Two local school teachers, Ruth Drudge and Jackie Duff, took leave of absence to study nature by bicycling in South America. Bob Griff is has shown a new technique in the field of animal biology by developing a strain of odorless skunks. Dona VanGilder has been awarded the Oscar for costume designing in the movie of the year, Business Perfers Women. Starring in this movie was Linda Surface. Barry Blalock is currently starring with the House of David basketball team. Susie Sullivan has invented a new product called Hairback for the men. Martha Miller has become an interpreter for General Larry Manwaring in the NATO headquarters in Naples, Italy. How we have changed! I wonder what will happen to all of us in another ten years. The class was especially active at the 4-way tourney which was held at Mentone this year. Other projects included the sale of boxes of candy in November and a penny supper in April. One for the Money was the name of the class play which was produced September 30 and October 1. Mrs. Caldwell, the class sponsor, directed the play. Bernard Loer entertained the class at a delightful weiner roast at his home near Burket in the fall. Another party was enjoyed at school at Christmas. The third party was held in the spring. THE STAFF PRESENTS SCHOOL ACTIVITIES SPEECH FESTIVAL CLUB The annual Kosciusko County Speech Festival was held at Mentone this year with Mrs. Caldwell as general chairman. Over two hundred students from the county schools and Warsaw assembled to demonstrate their talents in speaking. There were seven types of speaking: dramatic reading, humorous reading, original ora- tory, oratorical declamation, Bible reading, extemporaneous speaking, and poetry reading. Six years ago Mentone had five students who participated and received one excellent, two good, and two fair ratings. Last year fifteen students participated and brought home nine superior and six excellent medals. The Mentone Speech Festival Club has become a prominent activity with the students show- ing great enthusiasm for public speaking. This year there were thirty-two students who ask- ed to belong. Although only sixteen (10% of the high school enrollment) could participate, others were prompters and helpers and will participate next year. Dona Kay VanGilder holds the record of receiving a superior rating for four years. STUDENT COUNCIL Standing: Marcia Clampitt, Connie Newton, Bob Nelson, Jon Newcomb, Jack Rickel, Larry Sullivan. The officers selected interesting special features for each meeting. Our goal is 100% completion of every project begun. ROMAN BANQUET Mrs. Caldwell Latin Teacher One of the most interesting events of the year was a Roman banquet. Twenty- five Latin 1 and 11 students entertained twenty -two former Latin students of the junior and senior classes at an authentic Roman dinner of 2000 years ago. Chip Gast as Julius Caesar and Martie Nelson as his wife Calpurnia acted as host and hostess as the guests, dressed in white Roman togas, reclined at the table in the Latin room. The great feature of the meal was the 75 pound roast pig, furnished by Lloyd Bower man and Janet Rackeweg. During the elaborate three -course dinner the freshman girls entertained as dancing slaves. Larry Beeson, priest, gave the sacrifice before the meal and closed the dinner with a prayer to Bacchus, after which the wine bowl was passed and toasts were given in Latin. A short but snappy entertainment was given after the dinner. Lloyd Bower - man and Larry Beeson staged an exciting wrestling match. Chip and Martie pre- sented the dramatic but tragic death of Julius Caesar, assisted by Lloyd, Larry, and Jon Newcomb. Then Jon and Lloyd performed a gladiator contest with Lloyd being the fatal loser. This was the third Roman banquet, and everyone agreed it was the best yet. We have enjoyed working on it very much. Of course, there were times when the going was rough, and we felt like quitting, but now when we see the outcome, we know that every bit of work was worth it. We want to en- courage next year ' s staff to work hard because it is a wonderful opportunity which. should not be wasted. Our first and most deep-hearted thanks goes to Mrs. Florence Caldwell. It was she who selected us for this job. She has been very patient with us and has taught us to do the work the way it should be done. Next, we want to thank Mr. Robert Lee from the Delmar Publishing Company. He also has been very patient and helpful. We want to thank the Lockridge Studios for the pictures in this annual. Last, but not least, we want to thank the many advertisers, boosters, and subscribers who produced the funds for our annual. We are indeed thankful that we have spent many GOLDEN HOURS in Mentone School.
