One of the major projects of our busy schoolboard was theforma- tion of a common school district. Thanks to their efforts we now have a smaller more effective group to run our school. Every Menomonite is keenly aware of the most pressing of the board's problemsg the sale of our present school buildings and the construction of a new high school. At the first annual school meeting held in the gym last fall, around 1200 people voted 4-1 to sell the buildings. With strong public sup- port, Superintendent Terrill carried the issue to the Board of Regents at Madison. A hearing was held before the building commission headed by the governor. The commission placed the matter in the hands of a sub-committee who reached a de- cision by July first whether or not to purchase our buildings. STANDING: Robert Swanson, Gordon Millar, John Westphal, James Solberg, Donald Cotts, James Quilling. SEATED: Ralph Bongey, Einer Lund, Phillip Johnson, William Terrill. BOARD or EDUCATION MEN AT WORK LEFT TO RIGHT: Lillian Foss, Nancy Sabatke, Marlys Bakke. 'v X SECRETARIES KEYBUARD QUEENS A day in the life of our secretaries begins shortly after the old tower clock gongs seven bells. They are the first to enter the school still quiet from the day before. But soon the noises of flipping files, chattering typewriters, and scratching pens break the early morning silence. within the next half an hour, the first traces of M.H.S. popu- lation appear, and that means oncoming work. Lil must read the flood of excuses from home and then issue make-up slips. Marlys and Nancy must roll hundreds ofditto copies for our teachers. After this mad rush, things settle down to a quiet day of doing a thousand necessary jobs. But through everything these efficient workers have an ever-present smile and a friendly word of cheer for every student and teacher. 70
