TRACK '59 MENOMUNIE CINDERMEN Coach 1-Ienjurn and Manager Bill King give the starting signal to Art Ahrens. The 1959 track season brought forth many firsts to be written down ST in our sports history. This was the first year the track team was placed f in Class A competition at the sectional and state meets. Another first was the running of the medley relay, consisting of two 220's, one 440, and an 880. This event was scheduled in all meets. Jim Proudlock ran the first 220, LaVerne Miller, the second 220, Gerald Buckley, the 440, and Bob Johnson the 880. The exceptional pole vaulter, Senior John Larabee, went through the season un- beaten. He qualified for the state meet in section competition. MJ-LS., as a team, placed third in the sectional meet. To continue building the running and jumping muscles of the returning trackmen v and to teach the underclassmen the funda- mentals, Coach Henjum prodded his men on. The thinclads dfOPDCC1 their first two dual meets to River Falls and Regis. On the road they placed second at River Falls, sixth at Rice Lake, and seventh in the invitational held at Eau Claire State College. In the annual Menomonie Little Olympics, won by Eau Claire, they finished seventh. Three Indians won state berths at the Eau Claire sectional.
