M.H.S. has closed its doors to us, another class of young men and young women armed with am- bition and desire. We've all helped make history even though it's not been recorded. We've grown in experience, knowledge, and faith. We've added a myriad of happenings to those already stacked away in our memories. All of these shou1dn't be scholastic or social events of our just-lived year. We must in addition, remember the physical de- tails of our God-engineered countryside. We must hold on to living pictures such as those found beside a trickling woodland stream and amid the snow-frosted figures of our northern Wisconsin winters. The Menomin '59 offers a history in pictures, both of school and of nature, so that we may always remember this year and the things that have made it. Because you so unselfishly devote untold hours to the production of the MENOMIN. Because you take an avid interest in furthering the English department at Menomonie High. Because you take the time to emphasize a college education and to help us choose a school suitable to our needs. Because you are more than a teacher in that you stand ready and willing to help us at any time. T0 YOU, MRS. STUDENT COUNCIL BUSY AS BEES Be helpful, be thinking, be working . . these are the be's of the Student Council members, the busiest bees around school, Although many were scholastic leaders and workers in several other or- ganizations, they found time to really pitch in on Council projects. In the fall before most noses were pressed against the grindstone, the Student Council members started the long, hard, but exciting plans for Homecoming festivities. Cold weather may have frozen the spirits of some, but it stimulated these kids to a victorious March of Dimes drive. Through a candy sale and street-corner collecting, the Council netted over 35580. Latelanuary found the Council members rather out of breath. Mike O'Neill had labored long hard hours on S100 hi-fi speakers which were initiated at a Hi-Fi Dance, The All Sports Dance called for program planning and decorations. A week later students slipped and slid, danced and dined their way to a wonderful time at the Sports Spree. Throughoutthe year the Council members were helped, encouraged, and thanked by those who de- served just as much credit. . the advisers, Mrs. Alice Oetting and Mr. Roger House. SPRING PLA Y '58 THE DEFENDER Last spring M.H.S. Thespians presented The De- fender , written by Reginald Rose and directed by Dean Wiseman. The lighted auditorium and the absence of curtains and intermissions gave the audience a feeling of direct participation in the production. This stirring courtroom drama portrayed a son who insisted that his lawyer father continue as defense attorney in a murder case, in spite of the fact that the father believed the defendant to be guilty. As the play drew to a close, justice prevailed and an amicable father-son relationship was restored . 22 Walter Preston. . Kenneth Preston. . Joseph Gordon . . . Mrs. Gordon ...... The Hon. They stand for agricultural leadership, country life, intelligent farming, citizenship, thrift, co-operative effort, and scholarship. Who stand for these ideals? Mr. Abbott's F .F .A. Nine categories cover their field of act- ivities called the program of work, Under the farming programs, they visited the Saint Paul stockyard, Farmers' Union Central Ex- change, tested soil, and planted trees. F. F. A. LEARNING T0 D0 Through co-op activities they participated in the Junior Fair and rented out the cow clippers. Community services called for the sponsoring of an essay contest, and the testing of milk and cows for farmers. Several future farmers were sent to Leader- ship Training School. The F.F.A. quartet participated in the quartet and speaking contest held this year at Menomonie. The boys, E. Styer, L. Weber, M, Sundby, and J. Kettner, came up with a second place as did also L. Weber with his speech. Mr. Abbott, ,Toe Kettner, and Bill Witt survey the stock. Joe and Bill look over and select their foundation gilts in the pig project known as Operation Porkchop. These selected pigs will reproduce into good meat type breeding hogs. Theywillmake it easy for the boys to get started inraising swine herds as hog enterprises. This, however, is only one of the activities ir1 the famiing programs which gives the future famiers a chance to meet their c1ub's requirement without investing money. DUING T0 LEARN Of course, as in every other chib, meetings had to be conducted and money saved. Larry Schlough and Tom Buckley deftly handled these jobs. Scholarship, recreation, and general activities all held their own on the docket. LaVern Weber and Roger Sipple cul- minated their high school F.F.A. careers when they received the four-year-sea1Jun- ior Dairyman's Award as well as the Wis- consin Farmer Degree. All the youngM.H.S. girls who are able to meet the requirements earn a berth on either the A or B Tumbling Team. First of all, muscles lax from disuse must be stretched back into good tumbling condition for the splits, the backbend, and the handspring. But soon this painful part is over, and the girls begin planning, perfecting, and performing new feats of gymnastic skills. B Team members practice continually in the hope of stepping up to A Team. For the A Team it's a constant search for something new and different with which to wow the crowd when the gals perform at a mid-season basketball game. TRACK '59 MENOMUNIE CINDERMEN Coach 1-Ienjurn and Manager Bill King give the starting signal to Art Ahrens. The 1959 track season brought forth many firsts to be written down ST in our sports history. This was the first year the track team was placed f in Class A competition at the sectional and state meets. Another first was the running of the medley relay, consisting of two 220's, one 440, and an 880. This event was scheduled in all meets. Jim Proudlock ran the first 220, LaVerne Miller, the second 220, Gerald Buckley, the 440, and Bob Johnson the 880. The exceptional pole vaulter, Senior John Larabee, went through the season un- beaten. He qualified for the state meet in section competition. MJ-LS., as a team, placed third in the sectional meet. To continue building the running and jumping muscles of the returning trackmen v and to teach the underclassmen the funda- mentals, Coach Henjum prodded his men on. This was his first year coaching track for M.H.S. No new records were set as thirteen teams participated in the afternoon track meet copped by Rice Lake with 37 team points. The responsibility sometimes overwhelms me. I need your help. I need your strength and wisdom to guide these young feet on to straight paths, Let your knowledge be mine and mine theirs. av, in sursnmn-:NDENT WILLIAM TERRILL 68 We, the students, wish to express our appreciation to you, Mr. Terrill, for your loyal devotion to the im- provement of our city's educational system. Through your efforts and perseverance, a useful eval- uation of our schools has been obtained, improvements have been made, and plans for better facilities have been promoted. With you at the helm, we can look ahead with as- surance to our journey in learning. :Q To you, Mr. Hagman, we offer our sincere thanks and appreciation for successfully guiding us through another year, You've supervised us in making those all-important decisions and taught us to respect the feelings of others. With your warm smile, friendly manner, and en- couraging words of advice, you have helped us students to rise above our perplexing problems. PRINCIPAL JOHN HA GMA 69 ' , One of the major projects of our busy schoolboard was theforma- tion of a common school district. Thanks to their efforts we now have a smaller more effective group to run our school. Every Menomonite is keenly aware of the most pressing of the board's problemsg the sale of our present school buildings and the construction of a new high school. At the first annual school meeting held in the gym last fall, around 1200 people voted 4-1 to sell the buildings. With strong public sup- port, Superintendent Terrill carried the issue to the Board of Regents at Madison. A hearing was held before the building commission headed by the governor. The commission placed the matter in the hands of a sub-committee who reached a de- cision by July first whether or not to purchase our buildings. STANDING: Robert Swanson, Gordon Millar, John Westphal, James Solberg, Donald Cotts, James Quilling. SEATED: Ralph Bongey, Einer Lund, Phillip Johnson, William Terrill. 'v X SECRETARIES KEYBUARD QUEENS A day in the life of our secretaries begins shortly after the old tower clock gongs seven bells. They are the first to enter the school still quiet from the day before. But soon the noises of flipping files, chattering typewriters, and scratching pens break the early morning silence. within the next half an hour, the first traces of M.H.S. popu- lation appear, and that means oncoming work. Lil must read the flood of excuses from home and then issue make-up slips. Marlys and Nancy must roll hundreds ofditto copies for our teachers. After this mad rush, things settle down to a quiet day of doing a thousand necessary jobs. But through everything these efficient workers have an ever-present smile and a friendly word of cheer for every student and teacher. 70 FACULTY AND DEPARTMENTS ALONG THE PATHS ARCHIE ABBOTT, B. S. RALPH B-ONGEY THIS MAN WE SHALL REMEMBER This is a tribute to Mr. Bongey -- a man beloved by every student at Menomonie High School and by every alumnus. We remember him as one of the best teachers we ever had. Mr. Bongey could teach any subject and make it fun to learn. When he became our principal, he ruled with a firm hand that was always extended to those who needed help with a problem. As a coach, he inspired his boys and infected them with a will to win. His spirit plus their ability enabled our teams to play in the state tournament many times. But the real tribute to Mr. Bongey does not lie in this book to be buried and forgotteng it lives in the hearts and minds of all who knew him and believe that the powerful, yet gentle, spirit of a certain Grand Old Man will continue to guide as long as students seek to learn -- as long as memory exists. 'Beauty is truth, truth bcauty' -- that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. This have I learned. Afraid of the world? No, not I, for I have experienced a time of exciting, preparation for things to come, Ihave felt the pulse of changeless truth. I have learned the eternity of sacred beauty. May I never lose sight of my goals. May I continue steadfast, hoping and enduring guided by Thee to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. Make my hands helpful, eager, my heart loving, yearningg my mind keen, appreciative, my body pure, holy. I lift my eyes, my aspirations to Thee, Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset. s r v rr A , F .13 F 215 .AQHA . f.-, 19,4 - W, ew , , vi ,, Q ,V , ,N ,I ,iff V, ,, ,. .
