Board of Education Every large company or business has a Board of Directors to make the policies to operate that business. The Board of Education is elected by the people of this school district to JOHN A FERNSTRUM set the wheels in .motion for the oper- VOLMER THOMSEN secretary ation of the public school system of Treasurer Menominee. They have the tremendous responsibility of operating one of the largest businesses in Menominee along with serving through the school building program. These prominent businessmen are giving freely of their time and experience. They meet regularly once a month and often at special meetings once a week to plan and execute the business of operating seven buildings in- volving ninety-five teachers and 2,650 students along with twenty-five other employees. Their reward is not monetary as no Board member is paid. Their reward actually comes when they see the students of this school system developing into fine young men and women. The true purpose of a school is to give every student an education that will best fit his needs along with the needs of our society in this great country of ours. If you are doing your best to achieve this aim, you are making everyone proud. If you are not, it is not too late to start. We certainly appreciate the work the Board is doing and wish to give them our sincere thanks for providing us with an excellent education in beautiful surroundings with capable instructors. , fifiifi. The Annual Staff OI 1959 Dedicates The Maroon To MR. OCTAVE C. PAQUETTE

Page 11 text:

lt is always a pleasure to extend my best wishes to the staff of the Maroon, our Menominee High School annual pub- lication. The academic record of every stu- dent is written in the permanent file of every student. It is the private business of the student, his teachers, parents, and his future employer. The Maroon is the openbook ofthe students and activities of groups of stu- dents It is beautifully illustrated to add dignity, and at the same time, human interest to these activities. It becomes the written log of the student's high school career. In years to come, many pleasant memories become alive as you browse through the pages of this publication. I want to thank the staff of this book for the excellent Job well done. At the same time, I want to extend my hearty congratulations to the members of the ,ggfenior Class of 1959. R Sincerely, M. W, Robinson Superintendent of Schools Public education in the United States has weathered the comparison with Euro- pean educational systems that was engen- dered by the advent of Sputnik I, We will, in the foreseeable future, keep the com- prehensive type high school that is the earmark of American education. All boys and girls will continue to have the oppor- tunity to study the subjects of their choices. The extent of their education will be limited only by their own abilities and ambition. Although our type of education has not changed, the emphasis in education has shifted back to a more thorough treat- ment of fundamental subjects. Educators and parents alike are reaching the con- clusion that young people have not been workinguptotheir capacities. It is likely that they will have to work harder in the future than they have in the past. Scholas- tic standards will continue to rise and our boys and girls will soon appreciate the true significance of a high school edu- cation. Menominee High School will continue to present opportunities for an education in a variety of fields. There will be con- stant effort to improve our scholastic standards, to present more opportunities for counseling and guidance of pupils, and to take advantage of every situation that can be used for leadership training and the development of good character. James A. Murray Principal of Schools MR. ROBINSON Superintendent Administration MR. MURRAY Principal
