Championship in '47 and '48, and our track team won the l'.l'. award in '411 and placed second in '47, .Xll of us are proud to be members of a school which has made such a time record in sports. We know that many hours of hard work by coaches and team members have been necessary for success. XYe also know that our coaches have done much to promote an all-around athletic prograni and to encourage sportsmanship, teamwork, reliability, and loyalty, traits of character which were well exeniplined by members of this year's teams and the loyal fans who followed the games. ln future years when whether we won or lost this or that particular game has become :1 matter of little importance, many of us will remember the rules by which all good contests are won and apply them to our daily lives. 3 MR. XVe were looking toward the day when we might lead the school as dignified seniors. Now our tune has changed a bit, and we sigh, After Graduation Day. On that day, when we all leave M.H.S. to fill our places in society, we will have a soft spot in our hearts for the old alma mater, with its good friends and good times, the best we will ever have, whatever we may choose to do. VVe took the school by storm in '45, one htmdred and ninety-three strong, and estab- lished ourselves as an outstanding class right from the start. VVith leaders such as Ralph Rothman, president, Buzz Schmidt, vice- presidentg Dick Semke, treasurer, and Ken Hansen, secretary, we couldn't miss. We got busy with declamations and band, and also put ourselves on top scholastically. In our sophomore year, Bob Brink took over as president, XYayne Boucher as vice-presi- dent, jane Bilodeau as secretary and treasur- er, and Barbara Emery and Ray johnson as student council members. Under their guid- ance, we enjoyed one of the finest Christmas parties ever held at M.H.S. That year we also had ottr sports stars. such as Semke, Brink, XVells, Greenwood, Pontow, and johnson, who helped give Marinette a hard time at the an- nual grid classic which ended in a scoreless deadlock. W'e had our geniuses, jokers, and child prodigies too. Maintaining the scholastic record set the previous year was a job, but with good instructors, and advisers, and a little book-crackin', we managed to list names on the honor roll. The following year, we stepped into our position of potential seniors, better known as juniors. VVe choose Phil johnson as president, Ken Martinsen as vice-president, Barbara Emery as treasurer, and Carol linstrom as secretary. XYe enjoyed quite an eventful year with Menomince winning the l'.l'. football championship by defeating all comers, only to lose to Marinette in an upset by the heart- breaking score of I2-14. The highlight of the social season was. as always, the junior prom, presided over by King Phil Johnson and Queen Audrey Bouch- er. VVith a Mardi Gras theme of gay floats painted by the prom committee and with Brault's Canadians of Green Bay providing the music, everyone enjoyed himself immense- ly. Now, as seniors we are again striving to maintain the precedents set in our three years i11 senior high. This year the class elected Dick Deschaine, president: Dick Alfredson, vice-president, Alberta Dubey, secretary: and Ray Johnson, treasurer. Along with our scho- lastic achievements we are also duly proud of our varsity football team, which won all but one of the season's games, including the annual M. and M. classic, trouncing the Marines to the tttne of 34-7. The highlight of the winter social season was the senior ball, the first in over a decade. The gym was decorated with a Yalentines Day theme of red Hllll white. Everyone enjoyed himself dancing to the music of Forrest Ames' orchestra. lVe are looking forward to the senior class play, which never fails to be a success. To top off the social season, we have the junior prom, the theme of which is to be Deep l.'urple. As the year draws to a close, we regret leav- ing the good times which we have enjoyed. XYQ wish to extend our thanks to all those who helped tts to make our school life truly worth- while. Prophetic Nightmare I dreamed a dream the other night. It was about our town. And the ,4Q seniors who stayed to settle clown. It took me to the future about IO or 15 years, And what I saw of our class filled my heart with fears. To all these students go our sincere wishes for success. W'e wish to extend our thanks to Miss Riley and Mr. Miller, our advisers, and to the otFicers of this year's junior class, Robert l.al,onde, president: jack Anderson. vice-president: Darcel Smith, secretary, and Don Stewart, treasurer. The junior class play, held every year at the Menominee Theater, was presented this year on March 31, under the direction of Miss -lanice Gauger. The comedy entitled Cyclone Sallyu proved to be a tremendous success and was considered one of the outstanding events of the school year. The social highlight of each year at Kl.H.S. is the junior prom, the event on which the junior class puts much time and effort. This yearis prom was no exception, as its efficient committee members, both faculty and students. upheld the grand traditon of Klenominee High in its junior proms. As we turn back the pages, we can think only of the good times we have all had together. and how we will miss Menominee High after graduation day in 1950. LaLonde, Bob, President Anderson. The advantage of this plan is that a teacher who has the same group of young people with her for half a day, NOT only can correlate language, health, science, and social studies, but also can give more personal guidance to her pupils. lu the eighth grade cores, there are three teachers: Miss Xetzel, Mrs. Decker, and Mr. Slemann, each having a mormng and an afternoon group. The pupils' other half day is taken up with mathematics, physical education, and home economics or shop. The eighth grade core has made held trips to the City VVater Works, Sewage Disposal Plant, Police Department, and the Court House. Programs included plays by each core group, talks on promptness and courtesy, and a numher of Elms. A Christmas program was presented by the core group and consisted of a play and the singing of Christmas carols. The boys of the core had an opportunity to play on the color football squads and also on basketball teams, MRS. Science, Mathematics, Commercial Work and Home Economics Give Students Practical Training Science in Menominee High School is open to students ranging from the ninth through the twelfth grades. Freshmen study general science: sophomores take biologyg juniors may choose chemistry: and seniors elect physics. These different courses enable the student to apply his knowledge to everyday life and help him to prepare for college. Chemistry offers a college pre- paratory course and a general high school course. This year the commercial department received much needed equipment. New desks and new typewriters have been purchased, and the office practice room has been enlarged. Our typing and office practice rooms are equipped with all standard makes of typewriters, ediphones, comp- tometers, calculators. adding machines, and duplicating machines, to give this school a distinct leadership in this Held of training in the l'pper Peninsula. Mathematics in Menominee High offers a variety of coursesg such as, plane and solid geometry, algebra, advanced algebra, trigonometry, and general math. lfarly courses in general math concentrate upon problems which confront the average citizen, while more advanced courses give basic skills demanded for engineering, aeronautics, and related fields. Miss Ekholm, Miss Gilgenbach, and Miss XYellers have planned a home economics course which gives students much practical knowledge. The ninth grade course includes beginning art, the study of textiles, home nursing, and sewing. The tenth grade course provides for more ad- vanced sewing and meal planning. In the eleventh grade, students study home furnishing and later apply this knowledge, plus their ability in meal planning, in many projects, such as sewing upon woolen and rayon materials and knitting. This year the lloard of Education installed a completely new kitchen, and we know the girls who enter it will leave it far better cooks. Miss I2kholm's senior class enjoys work- ing in the newly equipped kitchen. 57 Students Enjoy 1-1ot Lunch Hour 'l111lSj'Q111'i411U111111211111'11g'1'Z1ll1Zl1f1Ci1!1O1O1'1ly the high seh11111 s11111e111s, 11111 111411 1l1e e'r2111e se1111o1 p11pi1s. 1'i11l' 11 s1112111 fee 81111101115 Cl1j11yCf1 21 plate of 11111 1111111. 111111ere11 l1rie2111. 11esser1. 111111 milk. All totaled, the Maroons won twelve out of fifteen games in the regular season and were undefeated in Michigan competition, until they lost to the U.P. Champions, Ishpeming, in the regional tournament. During the regular season the Xlaroons, after losing to Lourdes in the opening game, beat Kingsford twice, Oconto twice, and went on to defeat Stephenson. Manistique, Escanaba, Lourdes, Iron Mountain, and an alumni team. Then the Maroons lost to Marinette twice, but defeated Escanaba and Stephenson once more, making a total of twelve wins and three losses. The Maroons also won the district tournament, held in Menominee, by defeating Escanaba 50-38, after drawing a bye in the first round. This year the Maroons will lose Billy VVells, Emil Pontow, Phil Johnson, Bob llrink, Dick Deschaine, Gilly Krawetzke, and Vllayne Boucher. Players returning are Dick Shatusky, llob Amory, -lackAnderson, Alfred Eisenzoph, Eddie llrown, Ralph Haasch, Frank Swoboda, and Francis Keller. lYe all know that next year's Blaroons will put on as good a showing, if not better, under the able and efiicient coaching of Mr. lf. -l. McCormick, and whether they win or lose will show the great sportsmanship for which Klenominee has always been known. 82 8 :I I. Vfs Were Real Qpponents This yearys J.V.'s had a slow beginning, but once they started, it was hard to stop them. Any team that tried to stop them found it a real task, and when the game was over, opponents knew they had been through a real battle. Of the thirteen games scheduled, eleven have been played, with three won and eight lost. All the defeats have been lost by a margin of one to six points, except the second athletic event of the new year, when Kingsford's j.V.'s defeated our j.V.'s 32-18. The return game at Kingsford was a different story, for the j.V.'s won, 41-23. The J.V.'s hit their peak against Iron Mountain, when the M.H.S. quintet pulled a major upset by dropping the Mountaineers 33-18. It was Iron Mountainis second defeat in ten starts and the first j.V. victory for the M.H.S. quintet over the Mountaineers in eight years. Although they lost to the Marinette ,l.V.'s, 32-30, the Maroon j.V.'s gave the Junior Ma- rines the scare of their lives. To close a successful year, the J.V.'s won the reserves' tournament by defeating Gladstone 53-13, Escanaba 34-16, and Saint joseph's of Escanaba 58-27. Our J.V. team has won the tournament four years out of five, and the school is proud of their fine record. J. V. BASKETBALL Top row: Dick Janquart, Mr. Chambers, Dick Callies.
