Page 57 The G.A.A., as the picture proves, has fulfilled its promise of two years ago to become a higger. hetter and one of the most lively organizations in the school. Several new and outstznuling projects and activities are credited to the GA..-X. this year. Two of the outstanding ones are. the establishment of a girls' howling team which held weekly tonrnzunents at l3etson's Bowling llall. and the dinner which was helcl at the end of the hnskethall season, the purpose of which was to clistrihute hasketlvall numerals to the class l'7ZlSl'il'fllI1ll tezuns and the color teams. Other activities carried on lu' this organization were: volley hall, roller skating, hicycling. tennis and hiking. The G.A..X. also held several candy sales :incl one of the most successful matinee dances of the year. W'e feel that the success with which this clulm has functioned is due to its adviser, Miss Ruth Skowluncl. and its officers who were: President, linicl Henesh: Vice President. Sonia Knapp: Secretary. Elizabeth Meurer: Ireasnrer, Joyce Cairns. Page 58 CIRCLE CDF FRIENDSHIP The firclc of lirienclship resnnierl its activities this year with 52 active senior girls, with its usual purposeffto acquaint the Senior girls with one another, and give them information on the husiness world. The officers chosen by the nietnliers this year were: Marian la-ntlvx-cl, President: Marcella Ratayczztk, Vice Presiclentg .Xrlen l'ocan, Secretary: Frances Mead. Treasurer. Page 59 PEP CLUB The biggest cheer of the season is given in praise of the Pep Club. for its successful efforts in organizing the Menominee High School student body into a massed promotion group for athletic events. The Pep Club was organized two V Ill'N :wo nnder the direction of Miss Skowlund. Miss Keippel. and Mr. Meter. The members are a select group chosen from each class. Next year there will very few vacancies. The officers of the club are llresident-George VVachter: Vice President, Vernon .Xnderlei Secretary-lfnid lienesh: Treasurer-Rosemary lfaut. The primary purpose of the Club is to organize Pep meetings for the athletic events and to supervise Pig Tail day. This year however. under the direction of Miss Skowlund. they have done more than their duty. Through the sponsoring of the first football dances Menominee High has ever known. they raised enough money to fit out each of the cheer- leaders with snappy cheerleading sweaters. The Klub has done thinffs with Old Menominee High spirit. Thev have b 5 . brought it right up and we are sure they will keep it there. Page 60 FORENSICS The 1938 debate season saw six students activelv engaged in inter- scholastic competition. The question chosen for this year, Resolved: That the several states should adopt the unicameral system of legislature, proved very interesting and worth' while. In the trial debates the team composed of Dan Sauve, -loyce Cairns, and l.uella Sorensen upheld the aflirmative, defeating Iron River but losing to liscanaba by a 2-1 decision. The trio, Mary Margaret Klenacher, Robert Marvin, and George VVachter. argued the negative side of the question and were successful in winning a victory over Trenary but lost to Iron Mountain. Although neither team gained enough points to enter the eliminations, the work done by the members under the able coaching of Miss Clare was very admirable and brought much credit to Menominee liigh. In another field of public speaking activities, honors gn to Francis Blunden, who won first place in thc local and district contests with his declamation. Acres of Diamonds, and to Dan Sauve, who placed first in the local oratorical contest. Page 61 Qfwfifggi M fu JK WW? UW if QFWN ffgfgvi NY? 'Q R n fa Mmm f 'f ! 'X MW f I w 4 1 1 W 5 ml! One of the big games of the season was the one with Escanaba and the boys came through nicely for a 22-21 victory and they looked like a new team in doing so. A big surprise came with Stephenson's unset over the Maroons in the next tilt. 32-27. Bur Menominee wne wr for another biff event..Mar- inette.. and again clicked with a 14-12 winner this time and already the team was rated a success because of just two important victories. it was a split series with Oconto as De-4Cliaine's men made it two in a row 30-25. Lourdes again fell victims to a Mao'-rn Y1Sl?1110'l'lf the following Friday but it yvas C1056 with the :Cure nrovinn' it. 23-21. Revenge was sweeter than sweet in a romping 51-23 triumph over Stephenson in the next meet- ing of the two squads. That made it four in a row. Fscanaba's Eskymo: turned the tables the next time around and squared their series with a 29-16 win. E Finishing out a brief tail-soin. the Redmen fell before Tron Mountain in their single seasonal meeting 34-22. Then came Marinette and. in a wild affair, the tilt finally ended in a tie, 24-24. Playing minus several regulars, Menominee completed the season by dropping the first game of the U. P. Cage Tournament to Manistique 14-13. Maroons who saw varsity action were: Deschaine, Peterson, LaLonde. Scanlan. Morrell. jurgens, Haumler, liushey. Zielowski, Callow. and Wientlt. Page 68 One of tI.e finest and most beneficial athletic organizations in our high school is the junior Varsity which, under the excellent coaching of l.. lfrwin and .N Sharer. both on the gridiron and cage floor, has played a most important role in the very few years it has been active. Four seasons back, a 'lunior Varsity cage squad was organized and the following fall. football fell in along with the cage sport and since that time. the il-V's lzave advanced to the stage where Varsity Mentor. Bernard McCann, openly depends upon the organization for future material in which to build up his regular teams. XYhen junior Varsity basketball was first introduced back in W35, .-Xlgernon SllZU'Cl' was placed in the coaching chair and this past liebruary, he completed his fourth season as cage director. lioth Sharer and Erwin depended strictly upon Freshmen and Sophomores in which to bnild their lineups, always giving the younger athletes the nod and placing the need of experience before a victory-studded schedule. This past basketball season saw foach Share-r's ,I-V's run through I1 stiff schedule. copping four victories in ll starts and. additionally. graduat- ing several talented boys to the varsity squad in mid-season. The schedule Page 69 IUNICR VARSITY results were as follows: Oconto 25, bl-V's 19: Lourdes 6. -l-V's 16: Kings- iord 21, -I-V's 283 Escanaba 23, J-V's 14: Stephenson 12, J-V's 313 Marin- ette 27, .I-V's 123 Oconto 26. Robert Cadieu, Michael Conners, VVilliam Dooley, John Gressel. James MacAl1ister. Jack Refling, Robert Schilawski. Robert Sherman. John Vieth, and William VVood. Leslie Erwin has been coaching the bl-V football team since its organi- zation in 1936 and has been largely responsible for some of the outstanding material that Menominee's grid squads have featured in the past several seasons. As far as the win and loss column was concerned this past fall. Erwin's gridders managed to take but one ont of six contest: but the important factor is that many promising athletes have been un- covered and make the future very bright for Mr. Mcfann. The following are the 1937 game results: liscanaba 46. Menominee I-V's Og Peshtigo 33. .1-V's 03 Iron Mountain O. J-V's 6: lllarinette 19, j-V's Og Mai-inettg 32, ,l-Y's 0: Peshtigo 32, 1-V's 0.
