v STUDY TO SHEW THYSELF APPROVED UNTO GOD I960 SPECTR UM THE MENNONITE BRETHREN COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE WINNIPEG, MANITOBA REV. HENRY REGEHR The students of the M. B. C. I. wish to dedicate the 1960 Spectrum to Rev. Henry Regehr. We are grateful for his help as a spiritual guide and advisor. For the past four years he has taught us by both word and example. We sin¬ cerely appreciate his faithfulness and wish him every blessing in the future. 4 Department 4 nd • Conunerpe Photo PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Our age is frequently accused of being so materialistically minded. To deny this would be folly. To even the most casual observer it is all too evident that too many folks today are either involved in a frantic race for wealth, or concerned chiefly about entertainment and pleasure. Self-indulgence, not service, appears to be the chief desire of man. The Bible says that in the latter days men shall be “lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.” Our age appears to have succumbed to this natural tendency in man. And so, without trying to rationalize or offer excuses, let us ask ourselves. What is our responsi¬ bility as a church school in this respect? What do we owe our present age? I would say first of all, that weowe this age young people who have a proper perspective with regards to work and pleasure. The very fact that our churches were willing to sacrifice in order to give us the fine gymnasium now standing on our premises is proof that we believe in wholesome recreation. However, let us never make recreation an end in itself, but always a means to an end. The “end” is the healthy body resulting from moderate recreation, a body which will be capable of thorough, conscientious work; work that will serve man and glorify God. For us, this simply means, that we must give our age students that will keep their bodies healthy, and thus their minds keen and their school work up the highest possible standard. Secondly, we owe our age graduates who will permit God to direct them into professions and employ¬ ment. Graduates whose criterion for choosing their life’s vocation will not be based exclusively on possible remuneration, but who will be willing to follow God’s call into tasks that will require sacrifice and service. We must give to our age graduates who will act upon their belief that “Life is not a cup to be emptied, but a measure to be filled.” Individuals who will realize that consistent draughts of self-indulgence tend to empty the cup of life and that each self sacrificial deed of service to others fills this measure. May we all realize that we have an alotted time in which to fill this measure and also that the fulness of this measure will be the criterion upon which our life shall be judged eventually. And thus must present to our age “measures” that are being filled. This is our God given responsibility and our God granted opportunity. In so-doing we shall help to stem the tide of materialism rampant today. Mr. Henry Dick. Mr. H. Visch. B.A., B. R. E. - Vice-Principal. “Success is not a measure of greatness, wealth or fame, but the ratio of what a man is, to what he could have been” - Wells. £ $ a Parents, teachers, fellow-students, and friends of the M.B. C.I. We, as a graduating class, have finally reached our year, our year of graduation. We are about to step over the threshold of high school education into a beckoning future. Our intellectual gains have not overshadowed the spiritual impression we have obtained from our teachers, fellow-students, and the Bible. If we compare our experience here at M.B.C.I. to a ship’s journey, we are now entering our desired harbour of graduation. We have encountered obstacles during our journey but our Guide and Captain has safely brought us through to this end. Now we have reached the culmination of our high school career, and as we re¬ minisce we often wish we could turn back the annals of time and relive some of our experiences. Now, as we stand at the end of our prescribed course, we realize that we, as graduates, owe a great debt of gratitude to all of you who have made it possible for us to successfully complete our journey. Thank you to our parents, teachers, school board, and also our fellow-students. Without you people, we could never have attended such a wonderful Christian high school. Now a word to you, the undergraduates. Keep up your search for knowledge and spiritual values right here in our school. As our parting word, remember; “Be courageous. Be independent. Only remember where true courage and independence come from.” - Brooks. We know that this true courage and independence comes from Christ, our Lord. GERHARD STREMPLER 21 GRADE TWELVE CLASS REPORT In a few months, another group of students will be leaving the M. B. C. I. As we, the grade twelve class, look back over our school term, we see our accomplishments and failures. We greatly appreciate what our teachers have done for us. They have led us with patient hearts and helped us to achieve our goals. We would also like to thank our fellow students for the co-operation they have shown in making this year the best of all. The religious training which we have received here has given us a better understanding of God and his will in our lives. We have had many enjoyable times together as a class. Our social calendar included several class parties and a drama. After many months of patient waiting, our gymnasium was completed and we were able to enjoy many more P. T. periods. The on-coming graduation is an event which we are all looking for¬ ward to. During this past year, we have gained socially, intellectually and spiritually. We will carry with us many happy memories when the term is ended. Irmie Eims ANSWER TO THE VALEDICTORY Liebe Lehrer, Eltern und Absolventen! GRADE ELEVEN A CLASS REPORT Our classroom is often like a ship on high seas. Storms rage around us making calm days rare. I Excitement and high spirits are usually the order of the day. The reactions of the crew on the first day I of our voyage were varied. For some it was only another tedious journey which forbode more trouble than I pleasure. To others it was a thrilling adventure, a real challenge, a promise of new hopes realized, new I goals for which to strive, and new fields of learning to be conquered. With a very competent captain in I Mr. Visch our crew of thirty-five set sail. What lay ahead? Would we all be able to weather the storms and I eventually reach our goal? Our first storm came in the form of Christmas examinations. Few were prepared when the warning I was given, and so, for many, frenzied preparations were necessary. When reports of the damage done I were issued some of us were almost ready to mutiny, but, with a new year, detemination once again won I the upperhand and we set about to repair and strengthen our frail craft. Already we hear rumours of a I hurricane which is due to assault us in mid-June. We will have to redeem the time in order to buffet I this attack, but, with a skilful captain at the helm, we are confident that we will be able to withstand even I this vicious onslaught - and rise victorious! Until then - bon voyage! - Elsie Klassen GRADE ELEVEN B CLASS REPORT On the first, long awaited, day of school, thirty-eight students entered the bright grade UB room, ready I for another year oftedious work and some play. It was soon discovered that play was practically eliminated, for we were now in grade eleven. Our spells of enjoyment have hinged mostly on socials; including bowling and tobagganing parties. Despite the addition of the gymnasium, we were limited to one P. T. period a week. Hard work has prevailed all year. We have had to cope with physics, chemistry and literature. In return we got one study period which was later substitued for a P.T. period. Through our morning devotions, religious periods, prayer meetings, and religious emphasis week, we have been spiritually blessed. We have learned to understand religion better and know how much we really owe our Master. Academically, we have gained in our knowledge and spiritually we have added to our wisdom. -Jake This sen 31 GRADE TEN A Independent Credit 3JefaeIIerg 493 Notre Dame Avenue Phone SP 4-5544 ELEANORE BAERG - “Sing away sorrow, cast away care.” VIOLET BROWN - Appears demure - but beware of that look in her eyes! Common to us all were E the uncertainties and anxieties of our first few days of school, dealing with how new acquaintances and old friends, new teachers, and advanced subjects, would all fit into their proper places. E It did not take long, however, before our aims and goals towards school occupied first place in our j minds, and we applied ourselves wholeheartedly to achieve these goals. For most of us, the main desire has been to receive a good education for our benefit, combined with stimulating social activity. It is true 1 that a person obtains only that which he earnestly desires, and thus, all«of us have achieved, in a measure, various goals this year. | Most of all, each one of us has received practical instruction and guidance in the Christian life, and many of us have grown spiritually. The Christian examples of our teachers, given day by day, and the friendships with many students who share the same beliefs, has been a constant encouragement and blessing. Judy Warkentin. GRADE TEN B CLASS REPORT The year 1959-60 has been very exciting for the classmates of 10 B. The students are very energetic, peace-loving and studious. Most of them knew each other but there are a few newcomers whom we greatly welcomed. Quite a few students of 10 B feel as if they have matured considerably during 59 summer holidays because they are now in High School. Most of the students were looking forward to the new gym building where they could let go of their pent-up feelings, as before they did this by creating commotion in the classroom at which the teacher did not seem very pleased. The Religious subjects have helped many of us spiritually in that we have had a greater understanding for the Bible. The teachers have been a great help to many of us in more than one way. We thank them for this. Exams are something most of us have to cram for, while others enjoy basketball games the night before exams. If most of the students study hard, they will pull through and we’ll have a reunion in grade eleven again. Irmie Redekop 34 GRADE NINE JIM ALEXANDER - A man of few words. JBefeljr Sc ‘ limited 35 GRADE NINE CLASS REPORT ( The grade nine room consists of thirty-one students, all varying in size and character. Approximately half of the class did not attend this school last year, but soon even they got accustomed to the daily routine. In the beginning our studies were neglected a bit but as Christmas approached we had to buckle down to work. The results on our report cards soon showed us how we were getting along. However, this year has not all been work. We had our fun during P. T. periods, class parties, and films. In closing we wish to thank the teachers for the help given us and the blessings received during devotion and religious periods. Barbara Wiens SEVEN AND EIGHT CLASS REPOR1 The grade sevens and eights may be considered by many as the Junior Members of our School, but we students feel that we, indeed, are an important part of it. Our room consists of forty-one en¬ thusiastic classmates - thirty-one grade eights and ten grade sevens - under the capable leadership of Miss Wiens. Although we sometimes felt that we were overburdened with work, we now realize that success comes only after studious effort. In addition, there were many monents of fun and laughter especially in our new gym. Many students received a great shock when our “friends,” the report cards, arrived in the mail. Others, however, were delighted at their results. Now we know what to aim for, so that we can improve our marks. We have had many a spiritual blessing at school, especially during the Thursday morning prayer¬ meeting. On behalf of our class, I wish to thank the teachers who have made this a profitable year for us. Once again this year, the student council of M. B. C. I. has made its presence felt throughout school activities. Our main goals as a student council have been to co-ordinate student activities and to foster a close student-teacher relationship. We have tried to make our school a better institution of learning; one which will honour and glorify our Lord and Saviour. We as a student council, would like to express our appreciation to you, the student body, for granting us the privilege of serving you. We also wish to express our sincere appreciation to our principal, Mr. Dick, who has been a very competent advisor and guide to the student council. BUGLE STAFF Once a month our library is transformed into a miniature printing press. Once again it is time for the Bugle” to be issued. Minds have been active; nimble fingers have been busy transferring thoughts onto paper; typewriters have been clicking, until all is ready for the press. Our old faithful Gestetner now comes to the scene of action. Willing hands patiently operate the machine as page after page is rolled off the press. Soon a huge pile of paper has accumulated which contains a devotional, humorour incidents, reports of school activities, and other items of general interest. The final stage has now arrived - that of compiling and stapling. Another “Bugle” has been created. What benefit do thestudents receive from these hours of thought and labour? We hope we are justified in feeling that it fosters a more desirable school spirit as well as providing students with an opportunity of expressing themselves for the benefit of all. We are grate¬ ful to God for having sent Rev. P.R. Toews to our school. Rev. Toews showed a sincere interest in the welfare of the students and he endeared himself to them. Because of this he was able to speak to us in such a manner that the Holy Spirit could work in our hearts. In the mornings, Rev. Toews spoke on being a joyful Christian and in the afternoons he spoke on con¬ version. Through him our school was richly blessed. Victor Thiessen. REV. P. R. TOEWS PRAYER COMMITTEE REPORT “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Phil. 4:6. Prayer is part of our spiritual diet. Through prayer we communicate with God, asking for our needs and praising His grace. Every week we have this opportunity in school. Once a month all classes gather for a testimony meeting which concludes with a short period of prayer. The other weeks each class has separate prayer meetings. Through sharing experiences in testimony and uniting in prayer, we have received many blessings. We pray that in return for blessings received, we might be a blessing and a light to those who are still outside the fold. Herb Klassen. SEATED: Margaret Redekop, Eleanor Wall, Mr. H. I. has been one which all students will fondly recall in years to come. The term was begun in the proper way by getting acquainted at a Get-Acquainted, party. Under the influence of good fellowship, songs, and games, a strong bond of friendship was formed among the students. This bond was held and strengthened with the progress of the year. The annual Christmas Banquet, was also a pleasant evening which ended the first semester. All rooms held class parties. Bowling, and tobogganing seem to have been the favorite forms of entertainment. The social activity in the school has helped to maintain a wholesome atmosphere throughout the year. David Enns. Compliments of f. g|r Enterprise 1181 Kttdooan Drive Ph. Yes, electricity is such a bargain that Winnipeg homes use an average of over 7,700 kilowatt hours each year, or approximately twice the national average.
