GRADE NINE CLASS REPORT Apologies to Hood With fingers weary and worn, With eyelids heavy and red. The Grade IX class sat in everyday rags, Plying their pencils and pais - Scratch I scratch I scratch I In poverty, hunger and work, And still with voices of dolorous pitch They sang the “Song of the Lark”. WorkI work I work I While the alarm is ringing aloofl And work - work - work, Till the stars shine through the roof I It’s oh ! to be a slave Along with the barbarous Turk, Where a class has never a penny to save. Is this monotonous work I Work - work - work Till the brain begins to swim; Work - work - work Till the eyes are heavy and dim I Reading, and writing, and thinking, Thinking, and writing, and reading, Till the heart is sick and the brain benumbed, As well as the weary hand.
