A REVIEW Y THE SEA Sea gulls, Sailing o’er The tumbling ocean waves On wings of grace, as arrows Black, then gold, Dip down to cool their silvery wings In ocean spray; Then soar up high, Yea, higher than the clouds, To join a thousand others there. Grey rocks Unchanged stand Down through the centuries; Though winds and ocean O’er them break With forceful weight and thundering cry. Alone and motionless They lend themselves .without reserve Unto the Sea. The Sand, Warmed by The sun’s hot rays, Unkept by rising ocean tides Which come and go And drive the drift wood and the sea shells up, Is soft and comforting to me As full of wonderment I stand, And from my vantage point Obeserve the Sea. — Martha Bergen The editor’s reply •‘Companion” in production Directions from the assistant editor. MR. KLASSEN Staff Advisor Left to right — Edmund Janzen. Albert Hiebert Abe Dueck (Chairman), Bettyanne Nikkei Arthur Prieb and Ethel Brandt A Students at College have always shown interest in the literary functions of the school. The literary committee, therefore, faces a definite challenge and a great responsibility in meeting the expectation of the students. The committe is in a unique situation in that its work and responsib¬ ilities are not clearly defined. Despite this, adequate provision is made for expression of originality by providing ample opportunity for student par¬ ticipation in the large literary field. The College “Companion is one of the main vehicles of student expres¬ sion. Since a ll are encouraged to contribute, it is obvious that a paper of this nature cannot always be of the top literary quality. It has. however, proven to be source of blessing to those writing as well as those reading the various articles that appeared. This year, the committee has also branched out into other areas of work. A debate was sponsored, the resolution being “that M.B.’s should more actively participate in efforts directed toward the rectifying of social and moral evils.” The literary program included such things as a poetry contest, a public speaking contest, a film, and a drama. Although the committee members have all felt their limitations and incapabilities, they have worked enthusiastically and faithfully. Not all the work demanded special literary talent but it all contributed to the success of the program for the year. Abe Dueck.
