MR. MARTENS Staff Advisor Music plays a vital role in the Christian’s spiritual development. We have learned to realize how important it really is and how basic it has become to our form of worship. Man’s desire to praise God is not satisfied in a mere verbal¬ ization of truth; rather it seeks a deeper mode of expression. Music fills this special need and makes our worship more meaningful by enhancing and intensify¬ ing the truth. Left to right — Margaret Pauls, Jeggy Martens, Nick Kaethler, Joan Rempel, Bill Baerg (Chairman). Because our school realized the value of the ministry in song, several octets, quartets, trios, and other ensembles of various sizes were formed. The college family, local churches, missions, Sunday Schools, Old Folks Homes, and jails have tasted the fruits of this ministry. We thank God for the many open doors which we were able to enter with the songs of salvation. An enriching experience for the College and the whole constituency was the presentation of two larger works: “The Messiah” by G. F. Handel and “The Requiem” by Brahms. Mr. Victor Martens, the head of the music department, was the conductor of the 175 voice oratorio choir in both productions. Of spiritual and educational value to the 30 voice A Cappella Choir was the singing of Bach’s motet “Jesus Meine Freude.” This work was also recorded and broadcast over the CBC network. In addition, the choir worked on a repertoire of songs which were used in the visitations to the Manitoba, Alberta, and B.C. churches. A donation of $2,500 was made by the student body to the music department towards the purchase of an organ. The music committee, expresses its gratitude to the student body for its sacrifice which made this gift to our Alma Mater possible. It was a God-given privilege for the committee to assist in the various musical activities of our College. May God grant that our every contribution has furthered His cause. BILL BAERG.
