Issuing from the importance of the church’s God-given assignment, we are under constant moral obligation to seek greater effectiveness in our handling of the Word of Truth. This cannot be done merely by acquiring countless facts and theories; we must consciously and constantly apply ourselves in the arena of practical experience. This may sometimes become wearisome, never¬ theless, if we desire to handle the Word rightly, as we do, we cannot afford to by-pass this priceless opportunity of training for service through service. We dare not look upon our labour solely as an opportunity to advance our own training — the very purpose of the Christian life far transcends such a narrow and selfish goal. While we do not wish to emphasize our ministry beyond-the limits of its importance, we do wish to say, and that humbly, that we are “striving together for the faith of the gospel” (Philip- pians-1.27). “For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10.45). We have been entrusted with a commission — to present the unsearchable riches of Christ to those who are being carried away to death — and it is our desire to fulfill this obligation which we have received from the Lord. We might say, he offered them a three year course. The four Gospels would then constitute the “Yearbook” of their school. Referring to his Gospel Luke speaks of “all that Jesus began both to do and teach” (Acts 1:1). The college which the disciples attended had only one teacher, but apparently he offered two courses — the practical and the theoretical. Nowhere is there any indication that there was an option; both courses were compulsory. One class of people, the Pharisees, fell under the severest reproach of the Master, and the reason Jesus condemned them was because “they say and do not” (Matthew 23:2b). They had neglected the practical. Christ was not only a perfect teacher, but he also gave his students ample opportunity for preach¬ ing, healing the sick, and helping the poor, and who is able to say that he did not also join them in singing and recreation? Most students come to College to study, but our training here would be incom¬ plete if provisions were not made for the application of our knowledge. The student council has tried to serve in this area by providing opportunities and guidance to the students in applying the lessons so forcefully presented by our instructors. We trust that in our school neither of these two important courses have been neglected, and that as a result each of us might leave this school as “a workman that needeth not to be ashamed” (I Timothy 2:15).
