Cor. 3:11 The permanency of a structure, whether material or spiritual, is determined by its foundation. This is the great truth which Christ impresses on His hearers as He closes his “Sermon on the Mount.” The wise man built his house upon a solid foundation. The rising floods and the raging storms could not destroy it, “for it was founded upon a rock.” The permanency, stability, and continuing effectiveness of our Mennonite Brethren Church will be determined by our unwavering loyalty to the foundation “that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” The fierce winds of false doctrine (Eph. 4:14), the rising tides of sin and lawlessness (Matt. 24:12), and the organized forces of darkness (Eph. 6:12) will not prevail against the Church that remains true to Christ in faith and life — in doctrine and ethics. The Christians of Corinth were in danger of building their faith on the shifting sands of human authority and leadership. The Apostle Paul reminds them of the exclusiveness of this found¬ ation in the verse cited above. There is no other foundation, there is no other name (Acts 4.12), there is no other gospel (Gal. 1:9). The Bible College is dedicated in its total program of instruction and training to this found¬ ation. With the great hymn writer, Samuel J. Stone, we gladly and firmly confess: “Th Church’s one foundation, is Jesus Christ her Lord.” The sure foundation, however, is the Christ of the Scriptures, the Christ whom the Word of God reveals. To know this Christ, and then to make Him known, constitutes our chief task and responsibility. As our dear granduates and students leave the halls of our College for various fields of service at home and abroad, it is our earnest prayer that they may ever build on this one and only foundation, the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ, our Lord! J. A. Toews. 1 DAVID EVERT, M.A., Th.M. Greek Grammar Hebrew Grammar Pauline Epistles Old Testament History Systematic Theology History of Missions Greek Exegesis The pleasant personality of our registrar is congenially blended with a genuine devo¬ tion to his work. His well organized lectures spiced with fine, subtle humour are a joy to attend. Mr. Ewert’s sincere, Christian walk challenges us all to a dedicated life of service. FRANK C. PETERS, Ph.D., Th.D, Systematic Theology General Epistles Life of Christ Biblical Theology Hermeneutics Expository Preaching Psychology Christian Ethics A wide horizon of experience and know¬ ledge are channeled to his students through his practical outlook and frequent, humour¬ ous illustrations. Besides many other duties, Dr. Peters still finds time for personal contact and fellowship with the students; and the meaning of Christian discipleship is vividly portrayed in his exemplary life. His tran mission of scriptural truths is facilitated by his profound Biblical insight. HENRY R. BAERG, M.A., B.D. Old Testament Poetry Christian Education of Children Educational Work of the Church History of Christian Education Christian Home Medieval History Church History Johannine Writings Sincere interest and genuine amiability are characteristics which we as students especially appreciate in our Dean. In his duties he exhibits a personality well-equipped with tact and Christ¬ ian love, both of which are invaluable to a coun¬ sellor. Mr. Baerg’s willingness to answer ques¬ tions adds to his teaching ability and deepens cur knowledge of the subjects. His optimism and cheerful disposition assist greatly in establishing a friendly contact with the students. i CORNELIUS WALL, B.D., M.A., Th.M. Nowhere do students find a more sympathetic ear or under¬ standing heart than with our student pastor. His practical lectures give evidence of a deep desire to lead others to this same intimacy and realization. Such a burden, in addition to a rich pastoral background, intel¬ lectual discernment, and a prodigious capacity for work, makes his impact permanent and indelible. HERBERT GIESBRECHT, M.A., Th.B. Remedial English English Literature He has distinguished himself as library .scholar, and Christian example. VICTOR MARTENS, S.M.C., A.M.M, Voice Conducting A Cappella Oratorio If singing Christian music may be termed a pleasant theology course, then Mr. Martens has taught us many profound Christian truths this year. In the power of his sincere faith and trem¬ endous artistry — technical as well as interpretive — he led us into depths of Christian music which we had not known to exist. As the years heap higher, we will remember him in the inimitable words and music of Bach: Trotz dem alten Drachen, Trotz des Todes Rachen, Ich steh hier und singe: Gottes Macht haelt mich in acht. The objective of our Bible College is clearly stated: “. . . to provide an oppor¬ tunity for earnest young men and women to prepare adequately for the high calling of Christian service . . .” Such an objective assumes that the student is a genuine Christian, endowed with abilities to serve, and willing to submit himself to such dis¬ cipline as is required for those who would serve. The College does not bestow ability but seeks to provide opportunity. It does not extend a call to Christian service but endeavours to recognize God’s call in the life of the student. It does not assign a field of service but assists the student to find his role in life by means of a counselling program. As a Board we are conscious of the ever-increasing demands that are placed upon the Christian worker by the church and the world. The call is for men who know God experientially, who are saturated with His Word, who are deeply conscious of a divine commission, who love and understand man and who are dynamic in their presentation of gospel truth as they relate it to our present day needs. Thus, with the strong support of our constituency, the Board has sought to rise to the occasion and provide for a competent and devoted faculty and a physical, intellectual, and spirit¬ ual environment conducive to the training of young people, called of God to proclaim the “unsearchable riches of Christ.” Rev. J. H. Quiring tytcuteca£e BILL BAERG, S.M.C. Coaldale, Alta. My College experience has deepened my realization of the implications of Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I but Christ liveth in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.” ERNA BLOCK, B.R.E. Clearbrook, B.C. “How precious to me are thy thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them” (Ps. 139:17). Help me to know the value of these hours, Help me the folly of all waste to see; Help me to trust the Christ who bore my sorrows And thus to yield for life or death to Thee. AGATHA BOCK, B.R.E. Marquette, Man. “A Christian is a mind through which Christ thinks, a heabt through which Christ loves, a voice through which God speaks, a hand through which Christ helps and a life through which Christ lives.” It is my prayer that the Lord might make of me such a disciple. ieid«Ate BETTY DOERKSEN, B.R.E. Ciearbrook, B.C. “Far to me to live is Christ” ' (Phil. 1:21). “I have resolved to follow Christ, The way of faith pursue; And tho ' temptations strong assail To Him I will be true. In Christ my confidence shall be, The fight I’ll ne’er give o’er; Until in heaven I shall stand Thro’ Him a conqueror.” ABE DUECK, Th.B. Coaldale, Alta. “That I may know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death” (Phil. 3:10). My College experience has truly been a time of reorientation for my life. I have found that only a Christ-centered life can have real meaning and purpose. DAVE EPP, Th.B. Chilliwack, B.C. “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you that ye should go and bring forth fruit” (John 15:16). “Faithful is he that calleth you who also will do it” (I Thess. 5:22). tyiadutiXet SIEGFRIED EPP, Th.B. Winnipeg, Man. “Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God” (Ps. 143:10). I have come to realize that the great- l S in J0 C °!? es - when we are in the Lord’s win. My desire is to find His will every day of my life. HELEN FAST, B.R.E. Sardis, B.C. Thy way, O God, is best, Thy will is mine, In all Thy hand I see, Whate ' er my lot may be Thy will is mine! DAVE FROESE, Th.B. Sardis, B.C. The privilege was mine to study at College during the past three years. But with privilege comes responsibility. One wonders, “Will I be sufficient for this responsibility?” I am thankful that as a child of God I may say with the apostle Paul, “our sufficiency is from God.” CpiacUcateA JOHN FROESE, Th.B. Newton Sidi ng, Man. As I evaluate my Bible College ex¬ perience “I count not myself to have apprehended.” Regarding the future, “I press toward the mark,” praying that I “might walk worthy of the Lord, being fruitful in every good work, and increas¬ ing in the knowledge of God.” JOHN HEINRICHS, Th.B. Glenbush, Sask. Through the study of God‘s Word I am convinced that I as a Christian must discipline my thoughts and ambitions and serve Him who is the Truth and who said. “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” JOHN ISAAK, Th.B. Springstein, Man. My College experiences have con¬ vinced me of the truth of the statement. All that I am I owe to Jesus Christ revealed to me in His divine Book” (D. Livingstone), and I would respond with the words of the song writer: “Love so amazing, so divine. Demands my soul, m ylife, my all.” PETER KOOP, Th.B., S.M.C. Calgary, Alta. “Oh the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!” (Rom. 11:33a). “Teach me thy way, I Lord, that I may walk in thy truth; unite my heart to fear thy name” (Ps. 86:11). ANNE LOEWEN, B.R.E. Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. In College I have been impressed with the greatness of God. Though we are only a minute part in His vast universe, yet He has chosen to use us for His glory. My desire is to be “as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart” (Eph. 6:16). DAVE LOEWEN, Th.B. Yarrow, B.C. While studying God’s will for man, I have been convinced that there is no Life outside of Christ, and that the Christian life consists of following Him unreservedly. Because the joy of dis- cipleship far exceeds any other, “I’d rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today.” My foremost con¬ cern is to labour constantly unto His glory. naduate MYRTLE M. MENDEL, B.R.E. Freeman, S. Dakota, U.S.A. Let me burn out for Thee, dear Lord Burn and wear out for Thee: Don’t let me rust, o ( r my life be A failure, my God,’ to Thee . . . Use ne, and all I have, dear Lord, And keep me so close to Thee That I feel the throb Of the great heart of God, Until I burn out for Thee. JOHN PETERS, B.R.E. Abbotsford, B.C. The study of God’s Word is indeed precious. However, except it find ex¬ pression in our lives it is in vain. Hence my prayer, “That (I) might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increas¬ ing in the knowledge of God.” GERHARD REIMER, Th.B. Vauxhall, Alta. “Thou hast said, ‘seek ye my face.’ My heart says to thee, ‘Thy face, Lord, do I seek’ ” (Ps. 27:8). The Lord called me to “seek His face” at M.B.B.C. and I feel that teachers and students have contributed much in help¬ ing me do so. I leave now, aware of many inadequacies but desirous of serv¬ ing Him as He gives grace. tyiactutUet JOAN REMPEL, S.M.C. Yarrow, B.C. As the subject of a musical composi¬ tion is the principal part of that piece, so Christ is to take central place in my life. My desire is to be: “Wholly Thine, O Lord To go when Thou dost call; Thine to yield my very self In all things, great and small.” LILLIAN STOBBE, B.R.E. Abbotsford, B.C. Regarding the past I can say, “Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O Lord, according to thy Word” (Ps. 119:65). Concerning the future I would say, “Master speak! and make me ready, When Thy voice is truly heard, With obedience glad and steady Still to follow every word.” RUDY WIEBE, Th.B. Winnipeg, Man. To trace His footprints Through the white waves’ seeth, Where curlews cry And tones blanch on glazed sand, And yet hear: “I went before. You follow.” tyl dueu €4 EDITH WIENS, B.R.E. Winnipeg, Man. In the study of God’s Word, it has become precious to me that I have a great God and a wonderful Saviour. This causes me to rejoice. Preparation brings responsibility, which with God’s help I would like to fulfill according to Colos- sians 3:23, “Whatever your task, work heartily, as serving the Lord and men.” NICK WIEBE, Gen. Bible Winnipeg, Man. “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect; but I press on to make it my own. because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” I pray that I may always “ . . . Press on toward the goal . . .” and “ . . . hold true to what we have attained.” —Phil. 3:12-16. s4(Ue tia tyxaduatet PETER KLASSEN, Th.B. Yarrow, B.C. ERICH MIERAU, Th.B. Winnipeg, Man. We might say, he offered them a three year course. The four Gospels would then constitute the “Yearbook” of their school. Referring to his Gospel Luke speaks of “all that Jesus began both to do and teach” (Acts 1:1). The college which the disciples attended had only one teacher, but apparently he offered two courses — the practical and the theoretical. Nowhere is there any indication that there was an option; both courses were compulsory. One class of people, the Pharisees, fell under the severest reproach of the Master, and the reason Jesus condemned them was because “they say and do not” (Matthew 23:2b). They had neglected the practical. Christ was not only a perfect teacher, but he also gave his students ample opportunity for preach¬ ing, healing the sick, and helping the poor, and who is able to say that he did not also join them in singing and recreation? Most students come to College to study, but our training here would be incom¬ plete if provisions were not made for the application of our knowledge. The student council has tried to serve in this area by providing opportunities and guidance to the students in applying the lessons so forcefully presented by our instructors. We trust that in our school neither of these two important courses have been neglected, and that as a result each of us might leave this school as “a workman that needeth not to be ashamed” (I Timothy 2:15). John Isaak MR. J. J. TOEWS Staff Advisor Left to right — Jake Pauls, Jake Wichert, Lillian Stobbe Ferdinand Toews, George Dirks (Chairman), Herman Voth Leo Siemens, Erna Block and Rudi Schnitzler A goodly number of our students have had little or no experience in any type of church work prior to their coming to College. Issuing from the importance of the church’s God-given assignment, we are under constant moral obligation to seek greater effectiveness in our handling of the Word of Truth. This cannot be done merely by acquiring countless facts and theories; we must consciously and constantly apply ourselves in the arena of practical experience. This may sometimes become wearisome, never¬ theless, if we desire to handle the Word rightly, as we do, we cannot afford to by-pass this priceless opportunity of training for service through service. We dare not look upon our labour solely as an opportunity to advance our own training — the very purpose of the Christian life far transcends such a narrow and selfish goal. While we do not wish to emphasize our ministry beyond-the limits of its importance, we do wish to say, and that humbly, that we are “striving together for the faith of the gospel” (Philip- pians-1.27). “For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10.45). We have been entrusted with a commission — to present the unsearchable riches of Christ to those who are being carried away to death — and it is our desire to fulfill this obligation which we have received from the Lord. One of the Christian’s primary tasks is evangelism. We are responsible for bringing the “Living Water” to our generation. Our task at College is accomplished by many and varied phases of devoted labour such as personal work, preaching, and pastoring. The part of the Foreign Missions Committee of our school in this great work of evangelism, is to promote the ministry of prayer. Knowing that continuous prayer has great power in its effects, we have taken upon ourselves the task of interceding for lost humanity and for the evangelistic witness of today. We have a threefold purpose in our intercessory program. Firstly, our prayer to God is that men everywhere might be saved from an eternity of death to an eternity of life. Secondly, it is our concern that through this prayer program each student will become aware of his responsibility to this age and will become burdened for the souls still lost in sin. Thirdly, it is our aim to acquaint ourselves with the work of our mission board and the efforts of other evangelical missions, in order that we may become aware of what is being done and what is yet to be done. We believe, that with these purposes accomplished, we as students will be more ready to hear and answer God’s call to service. God has answered our prayers and many students have become burdened for missions. We are grateful for this and shall continue to make our requests known unto God. Dave Loewen. STIMULATING INTEREST IN MISSIONS PEMBINA PRINTING LIMITED Letterpress and offset printing of all kinds Publishers of the Pembina Triangle Progress and the Morden Times Winkler and Morden MR. MARTENS Staff Advisor Music plays a vital role in the Christian’s spiritual development. We have learned to realize how important it really is and how basic it has become to our form of worship. Man’s desire to praise God is not satisfied in a mere verbal¬ ization of truth; rather it seeks a deeper mode of expression. Music fills this special need and makes our worship more meaningful by enhancing and intensify¬ ing the truth. Left to right — Margaret Pauls, Jeggy Martens, Nick Kaethler, Joan Rempel, Bill Baerg (Chairman). Because our school realized the value of the ministry in song, several octets, quartets, trios, and other ensembles of various sizes were formed. The college family, local churches, missions, Sunday Schools, Old Folks Homes, and jails have tasted the fruits of this ministry. We thank God for the many open doors which we were able to enter with the songs of salvation. An enriching experience for the College and the whole constituency was the presentation of two larger works: “The Messiah” by G. F. Handel and “The Requiem” by Brahms. Mr. Victor Martens, the head of the music department, was the conductor of the 175 voice oratorio choir in both productions. Of spiritual and educational value to the 30 voice A Cappella Choir was the singing of Bach’s motet “Jesus Meine Freude.” This work was also recorded and broadcast over the CBC network. In addition, the choir worked on a repertoire of songs which were used in the visitations to the Manitoba, Alberta, and B.C. churches. A donation of $2,500 was made by the student body to the music department towards the purchase of an organ. The music committee, expresses its gratitude to the student body for its sacrifice which made this gift to our Alma Mater possible. It was a God-given privilege for the committee to assist in the various musical activities of our College. May God grant that our every contribution has furthered His cause. Albert Hiebert Abe Dueck (Chairman), Bettyanne Nikkei Arthur Prieb and Ethel Brandt A Students at College have always shown interest in the literary functions of the school. The literary committee, therefore, faces a definite challenge and a great responsibility in meeting the expectation of the students. The committe is in a unique situation in that its work and responsib¬ ilities are not clearly defined. Despite this, adequate provision is made for expression of originality by providing ample opportunity for student par¬ ticipation in the large literary field. The College “Companion is one of the main vehicles of student expres¬ sion. Since a ll are encouraged to contribute, it is obvious that a paper of this nature cannot always be of the top literary quality. It has. however, proven to be source of blessing to those writing as well as those reading the various articles that appeared. This year, the committee has also branched out into other areas of work. A debate was sponsored, the resolution being “that M.B.’s should more actively participate in efforts directed toward the rectifying of social and moral evils.” The literary program included such things as a poetry contest, a public speaking contest, a film, and a drama. Although the committee members have all felt their limitations and incapabilities, they have worked enthusiastically and faithfully. Not all the work demanded special literary talent but it all contributed to the success of the program for the year. Abe Dueck. STAFF IN ACTION OOou ni- M E D I C A L A I D The Medical Aid Association has been founded in accordance with the exnor- tation in Galatians 6:2, “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” The purpose of the association is to promote good health among the students, to main¬ tain a high standard of sanitation in the campus buildings, to provide first aid, to practise preventative medicine, and to assist in the financial settlement of the medical expenses which are incurred. The student body was not altogether spared illness this year. Several casual¬ ties were due to the extreme activity of students. The consequence was loss of co¬ ordination of limbs. Resulting sprains were painful and convalescence was slow. The ambitious student, in his unending search after knowledge and in his continuous concentration, suffered from either of two extremes — insensibility to subject matter or pounding headache. Diversion of activity with the aid of an aspirin soon brought the desired relief. Surgery and wearisome hours in the hospital were the lot of others. The common cold and digestive disorders have made inroads among the student body as well. Members suffering from major afflictions or minor discomforts have, however, through treatment, medication, and reassurance made satisfactory recoveries. We owe our thanks to God for the protection we have experienced and the health we have enjoyed this year. Louise Koop Left to right — Katharine Reimer, Lydia Berg Sig Polle, Arthur Willms (Chairman), Melvin Toews. Recreation played an important part in our College program. The activities in which we participated were designed to invigorate the body as well as the mind. Our regular program consisted of volleyball, basketball, ping-pong, hockey, skating, and baseball. Teams were organized and a number of games were played against the Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute. With the addition of several “rookies” from the East and West, the College produced a high calibre of play. MR. PETERS Staff Advisor The committee arranged a number of “socials” which were enjoyed by students and teachers alike. Exchange visits with the students of the Cnaadian Mennonite Bible College proved to be highlights of the year. Many lessons that find application in successful Christian service are learned in competitive recreation. Where can you better learn to co¬ operate with others, to accept defeat graciously, and to exercise self-control than in the area of recreation?
