CLASS Hl 'I'0RY In the autumn of 1941 thirty-four boys and girls kissed their mothers good-bye and marched proudly off to school. Some were instructed by Miers Byler in the little red school house in Allens- ville and others by Miss Hartzler in Belleville. During the next seven years we received knowledge from the best: Miss Hooley, Mrs. Cunningham, Mrs. Patton, Mrs. Baker, Miss Bennett, Mrs. Warner, Miss McNabb, Mr. Treaster, Mr. Bassler, and Mrs. Huey. While in eighth grade we sold magazines to finance the annual trip to Hershey. Then a big moment arrived. We took our en- trance examination and prepared ourselves for high school. In the spring of 1950, forty-five proud freshmen from Menno and Union Townships became fully pledged members of the newly formed Menno-Union High School Jointure when the seniors gave us a never forgotten initiation at Halloween. We started that year to earn money by selling candy at the basketball games. During our sophomore year we continued planning for our Washington trip by selling Christmas cards. We proudly wore our bright scarlet and gray class hats which we purchased that year. In the course of our junior year we sold jello and Easter candy. We also sponsored the Stoney Cooper show which aided us in giving a well remembered Junior-Senior Prom. We also received our highly prized pennants, emblems, and class rings. ln the autumn of 1953 six of the original thirty-four pupils, strengthened by twelve from outlying schools entered M. U. for the last time. We sold Christmas candy and staged a play, Gran- dad Steps Out. On April 30 we had a delightful Prom at Birch Hill which was given by the Juniors. On May 10, 11, and 12, we enjoyed ourselves when we made our trip to Washington. Soon our last three school events arrived: Baccalaureate, Class Night, and Commencement. We realize now that the twelve years in school will be the best years of our life. CLASS PROPHECY To the Teachers of Menno-Union High School: In June of 1959 the class of 1954 of the Menno-Union High School had a class picnic. I thought you might be interested in knowing what your old pupils are doing five years after we left Menno-Union High School. Although most of us are married we are still employed at various places of business. All but three of the members could be with us. The absentees were Ray Fultz and Jake King who are in the United States Navy and Quill Peachey who is serving with the United States Army. These are en- joying a prolonged picnic with Uncle Sam. Had any of us gotten sick at the picnic we would have been well taken care of by the two nurses in our presence. Rachel Esh is Super- intendent of Nurses at Lancaster General Hospital, and Patricia Mateer is a nurse at the Geisinger Memorial Hospital, Danville, Pennsylvania. We were very fortunate in having Helen Bigelow with us on this day, for, since her graduation she has traveled to many different coun- tries in the interest of Professional Girl Scouting. Tom Collins is an electrical engineer with the Westinghouse in Pittsburgh. His friend Don Smith is working as an electrical tech- nician at New Holland Machine Company. As you remember, Ken Grassmyer was always talking about Michigan. He is now working for his Masters in Engineering at Michi- gan University. Although J oe Young is now owner of Shirk's Motor Express of Lan- caster, he still has the urge to pilot his own trucks instead of hiring drivers which he can well afford. With Joe came Ernie Kauffman who is a diesel mechanic and takes care of Joe's fleet of trucks. There are seven of us girls still following the typing and dictation instruction Miss Nason and Miss Runkle game us in High School. Helen Krepps is working for the Sentinel Company in Lewistowng Donna Miller is a secretary at the Standard Steel Works in Burnhamg Geraldine Knepp is employed at New Holland Machine Company in Bellevilleg and Shirley Stuter and Janice Boxe are secretaries in the United States Navy. Patricia Grabbe and I are working for the Ameri- can Avisco Company in Lewistown. While seated around the table we looked back in thought over our years in High School and recalled the many happy hours we had spend at Menno-Union. Jake King is always with a remark, and Rachel, we fear, is afraid of the dark. Helen Krepps is always a friend, with Pat Mateer, a buddy to the end. Donna Miller, our soprano, with Pat Grabbe at the piano. Quill and Ken, never apart, like the attention of a young girl's heart. Ray Fultz, with his muscles bound, and Tom in the Junior room is always found. Shirley did a hunting go and missed a day of school, we know. Gerry is a merry soul, at home-ec has to wash every bowl. Doris Ann to Siglerville goes, whom she sees nobody knows. Don Smith with his Ford so bright, is usually seen in town at night. Ernie with his skillful hand, is the drummer of our band.
