MENLO ON TOUR wgmacii SEX AMES RESEARCH CENTER Recently twenty students from Professor Vanderlips pro- duction class, toured Ames Research Center a division of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, lNASAi, in Sunnyvale, California. We were greeted by Mr. John Habermeyer, Director of Health and Safety, who planned the in depth tour for us, and arranged a variety of fantastic speakers. These diverse speakers spoke on such subiects as Exobiology, Flight simulation, and other various pure research activities being carried out on the fifty-five building complex. The speakers were Dr. Zill, Dr. Pelligra, and Mr. Pearson. These gen- tlemen were most responsive to the students in answer- ing a wide variety of questions. The tour began with a promotional film orienting the vis- itors to the functions of Ames Research Center. Primarily Ames is engaged in highly technical research concern- ing life in outer space with all its implications and more tangible research in the aircraft industry from small planes to the space shuttle to their latest studies con- cerning Verticle Take Aircrafts, IVTAJ. After the film we proceeded at a brisk pace to the worlds largest wind tunnel where new designs can be tested on the largest of airplanes. At present they were testing the aeordy- namic characteristics of one of the VTA's. From there we proceeded into the Life Science building where Dr. Zill, an articulate speaker, gave us a semes- ters course in biology in a forty-five minute period. On completion of a questionfanswer period we moved on to the building containinc- wht simulating equipment. Here Dr. Pelligra detailef. .ie tour. The simulator has the unbelievable abilities to simulate in every detail the flight characteristics of any type of aircraft under all weather conditions. The heart of the system is a com- puter which transmits the movements to the cab where the pilot or astronaut commands the aircraft. The pur- pose of the simulator is to detect design errors through its handling characteristics in real situations presented by the simulator. These tests of aircraft design and func- tionality are done before the actual aircraft is con- structed. lt is at this stage of development that many design that appeared feasible on paper have been abandoned or modified due to actual characteristics experienced through simulation.
