Recreation, enjoyment, and competition on a friendly basis, are all found in the Girls' PE. Department. For the outfoff doors girl, there is hockey, tennis, swimming, or volley- ball, and for the girl who prefers the warmth of the gym, there is trampoline, tumbling, body mechanics, basketball, or modern dance. In this department, a girl is taught the various sports, and also learns how to get along better with her school mates. Mrs. Davies is the head of this depart' ment. MUSIC DEPARTMENT Enjoy Yourself, It's Later Than You Thinkf' This seems to be what the Music Department is doing as the band, orchestra, and dance band, under the direction of Mr. Brown, and the choral groups, under the direction of Mr. Stobie, blend together to produce a very gay and melodious sound from building. With the concerts, Winter and Spring, and the various performances by the Girls' and . Bo s' Choruses, A Ca ella Choir, and the Choraliers, any Edward Brown Douglas Sfobls stuldent the least bit ini3erested in music, can ind relaxation and enjoyment. Mr, Ed Brown is the head of this depart' ment. 'C'-N-p INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT Interested in working with wood, or are you interested in mechanical drawing? The Industrial Arts Department is sure to have something which would suit you. In spite of the fact that Industrial Arts has only three major subject u X areas, woodworking, general shop, and mechanical drawing, jj N jp ' many areas are concentrated within' each of these subjects. jf! Robert Ayers Frank Bettencourt Arthur Boettcher William Loftus Sam Lugonja BOYS' P. E. DEPARTMENT There are many sports offered to the high school boy of Menlo' Atherton. In his freshman and sophomore years, he can play basketball, flashball, or swim, and in his junior or senior years, a boy can learn the strategic secrets of flagball, softball, speedball, and basketball, which is offered all four years. A sight which may seem strange, but which is just another trick of Sam Lugonja's, is havingkthe boys learn modern dance, while the modern dance class of girls is taught fby Samj that energetic game of football Qmaybe we'll have a girl on the varsity team yet! Not pictured are: Robert Gaughran and William Whitaker. ART DEPARTMENT You don't need to be an expert artist to enroll in one of the many art courses offered in the Art Department. These students, who feel they are artistically inclined or who desire to learn' more about this field, look forward to the period when they will walk down wing to their art class. Soft music is played over the interfcom, and one works at a very leisurely but accomplishing pace, either drawing the latest fashions, sketching a fellow class mate, fashioning a pottery bowl for mom for Christmas, landscape drawing, or learning lettering. General Art, Figure Drawing, Applied Art, Freehand Drawing, Fine Art, and Commercial Art are offered. Mr. McKennee is the department head. .
