Mem. Festival Helicopter ride at the festival Scenic aerial view of downtown Frenchburg This year saw the first annual Menifee Mountain Memories Festival. Maybe next year it will be called the second annual Menifee Mountain Memories Festival. Eventually annuals will be dropped and tradition will take over. This first Mountain Memories was a big success. It captured the downhome feelings all Ken- tucky has for history and friends. Through the Menifee Mountain Memories Festival it is hoped to preserve the antique and home crafts that are and always will be considered pure Kentucky. The Menifee Mountain Memories Festival began Friday, May 6, with the crowning of the King and Queen of the May Day. Gary Shrout also held a bass tournament. There were many crafts and food booths. Mike Helton and his band were in charge of the live entertainment. The festival didn't end there. Saturday, May 7, there was a parade and an antique car show, among many other things. There were crafts and food booths that brought much attention, such as a life-sized replica of a moonshine still and jars of sorghum and moonshine jelly. Sunday finished off the festival with a down home, old-fashioned Brush Arbor meeting and Gospel sing. Menifee County Boy Scouts Mtn. Mem. After the Prom, an alcohol-free drug-free party was held in hopes to save lives and keep the students from drinking and driving. Several activities such as movies, dancing, a casino room, pool tables, and fortune telling were used to entertain the students. At the end of the party, Melody Burkett won a car. Tonya Daugherty and Jason Brown were the Keepers of the Royal Seals. On May 6, 198S, the May Day cast took a trip back in time to the 1950's. The gymna- sium was decorated in 50's tradition with pink, black, and white as the colors. Emphasis was placed on 50's music and dress. Some of the grade school classes did routines to 50's songs, using dances from the 50's. Their costumes consisted of poodle skirts, rolled-up jeans, and white tee-shirts. Their hair was slicked back or in ponytails. Even the girls in the Royal Court dressed in style with tea-length dresses. Alma Jo Swartz sang Daddy's Hands, and Charlotte Sons sang The Only Real Peace. The royal Court members were as follows: Queen of the May was Jami Trimble; King of the May was Guido Finger; the Prince and Princess of Apple Blossom Time, Winfred Moore and Jeannine Craft; the Marquis and Marquesa of the Roses, Sam and Garietta Williams; the Count and Countess of Lilac Time, Will Mayer and Terri Hays; the Crown Bearers, David Botts and Stephanie Cornett; the Sceptre Bearer for the King, Mark Nickell and the Bouquet Bearer for the Queen, Charlotte Sons; Gift Bearers, Greg Brown and Jenifer Back; and the Keepers of the Royal Seals, Jason Brown and Tonya Daugherty. Tina Deskins asks, What would school be like without our snack machines? We never thought we'd make it, but now that we are here, let's journey back to our childhood years. It all started in the first grade when Sam Wil- liams continually tried to escape the clutches of the opposite sex, and Charlotte Sons tried to discipline the rest of the class by using a paddle while the teacher was out of the room. During the following elementary years, fifth graders Stephanie Cornett, Jeannine Craft, and Gari- etta Mayabb skipped class to eat lunch with the much-admired eighth graders. Sixth grader Jenifer Back carried her briefcase which kept falling over during class, scaring the wits out of everyone. Then our eighth grade graduation became the highlight of the year. We had several people to do well and get awarded for their outstanding achievement. Michelle Thomas was vale- dictorian at Menifee, and Mindy Botts was valedictorian at Botts. The following summer we prepared to enter the exciting world of high school. During our freshman year we got to meet a lot of new friends. Botts eighth graders joined Menifee at the high school. That year was spent getting used to new friends and hectic schedules. About the middle of the year we started loosening up. Jami Trimble was crowned Homecoming Queen with Jenifer Back as runner-up. Prince and Miami Vice were among our many favorites. The year ended with a bang as waterguns filled the halls only to be taken away before the day ended. Our sophomore year started with seven classes each day. It was tough at first, but we adjusted. Then came our funfilled junior year. Newcomers, such as Robin Setty, thought they would never fit into our wild and crazy class. Then came our fumbling demonstration speeches, such as the one Stephanie Cornett tried to do. In Stephanie's demonstration speech she was to make a milkshake. Unfortunately, instead of giving it to the class in glasses, she decided to let the mixer do its work. As you can imagine, the class got its fill of milkshakes for a while. Then came the prom. The theme was A Change of Heart. The class spent weeks and even months preparing for that night in heaven. The prom was a terrific experience for everyone. Jami Trimble was crowned princess, and Sam Williams was crowned prince. Wes quit pulling my leg. I know that truck can't go 200 mph in a straight stretch, says John Crouch, a prospective buyer. How in the heck do you think my day went? says Mindy Botts. Quit looking. Bimbo. A weekend is around here somewhere. We didn't think anything could top our junior year, but then came our SENIOR year. This year held many happy times for all of us. Guido Finger, a foreign exchange student from Germany, decided to venture into the unknown when he joined us at Menifee County High School. Also while we did the play Macbeth, we were visited by six witches. These witches provided our SENIOR class with some very enjoyable moments. As we drew nearer to Prom, May Day, and Graduation, we were reminded of the respon- sibilities awaiting us when we went our separate ways after high school. However, as we started to face these responsibilities, we did not forget our extremely funfilled years at Menifee County High School. EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT The students in the journalism class had deadline parties occasionally. These parties were to celebrate meeting difficult deadlines or to relax while reading the newest issue of The Cat's Eye. Have you ever seen a group of people who could work forever and never get anything done? That's how the journalism class felt this year. Meeting deadlines, taking pictures (sometimes without film in the camera), writing copy, and glueing down pic- tures were tasks which seemed endless. Not only did they have the responsibility of putting together the 1987-88 yearbook, but during the year they took on the added responsibility of doing The Cat's Eye newspaper and WCAT-TV news which was broadcast on Channel 12. These pro- jects were big responsibilities for a small class like journalism, but they had a lot of fun doing it. Trying to keep Mindy Botts from laughing all the way through a broadcast was the most difficult task of all. Fortunately, doing the TV broadcast, the newspaper, and the yearbook were enjoyable. Mindy Botts, Editor Being editor of a newspaper is a very big re- sponsibility. It takes a lot of hard work and dedi- cation. As editor, Mindy was responsible for making sure everyone wrote articles and that they were typed. Meeting newspaper deadlines kept everyone in a rush, but Mindy made sure the news was never late. This often meant staying after school and working until very late at night. After a very hard year, the members of the Journalism I and II classes agreed that Mindy did a fine job. Lisa Shepherd, Assistant Editor Although the editor of the newspaper has a lot of responsibility, there is always plenty left over for the assistant editor. Without Lisa's help, the newspaper wouldn't have been nearly as successful. Along with working on the newspaper, Lisa had to help with the yearbook and TV broadcast. The 1987-88 journalism classes would like to thank Lisa for her hard work and dedication. Jamie Henry, Advertising Manager Jamie's job as advertising manager for the news- paper was very demanding. She had the responsibility of making sure the ads for the newspaper were sold on time. If the ads weren't sold, there wouldn't have been a newspaper. Being advertising manager wasn't Jamie's only job. She also had to help write newspaper articles, work on the yearbook, and help with the news program. When asked how she handled all this respon- sibility, Jamie replied, It wasn't that hard when everyone worked together to do his or her part. Charlotte was a member of the Journalism II class. Her job was to play the role of assistant to Mrs. Brown. When Mrs. Brown was busy or absent or at any other time Mrs. Brown said, Charlotte was there to answer any questions raised by her classmates using her expertise gathered in Journalism I. Charlotte was quoted as saying, Journa- lism has truly been a great experience that I'll never forget. Stephanie Cornett, also a Journa- lism II student, took on the role of assistant editor. She had to do mostly the same jobs Charlotte did. She also worked with Charlotte on finding mis- takes on the pages. Her job was dif- ficult, but she fulfilled her duties with determination and patience. 150 Yearbook Staff Front Row: Tanna Spencer, Theina Spencer, Sherri Hol- land, Terri Lawson, Teresa Peck, Wayna Roach, Youvina Wells, Christina Wynn, Michelle Fields, Jenifer Downs. This task was given entirely to the Typing II class. They used their class time to type the year- book pages. The work they accomplished made them valued members of the 1987-88 yearbook staff. Ad sales is a major part of having a yearbook. The funds raised from ad sales makes payment of the book possible. Garietta Williams was the Advertising Manager for the staff this year. She was responsible for selling the ads or assigning someone else to sell them. She was also in charge of putting together the ads pages in the book. Her job was very well done. Managing the money for the yearbook staff is an important job. Jeannine Craft was the business manager this year. She was in charge of taking care of the funds. It was a difficult task, but Jeannine did a fine job at it. She took up money from yearbook sales and from ad sales. Thanks to Jeannine's fine work, the yearbook staff had the money in the bank to pay the bills. The yearbook staff wishes to give special thanks to Rob Tyra. Rob was a member of the Journalism I class. Special thanks goes to him for the designing of the yearbook cover and artwork throughout the book.
