Mrs. Handy graduated from Menifee County High School in 1972 and was employed by the school almost immediately after graduating. She has served as secretary to the principal for the past thirteen years. Her duties go far beyond a receptionist. She also maintains all school records, and most importantly, she maintains the financial records for the entire school. We feel lucky to have such a reliable person in such an important position in the school system. We would like to thank her for the years of efficiency, dependability, and loyalty by bestowing upon her this special honor. 6 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION Mr. Richard Ratliff Superintendent of Menifee County Schools 8 STEVE BAYKO PRINCIPAL RUTH BRYANT DIRECTOR OF PUPIL PERSONNEL ANDREA LEACH GUIDANCE COUNSELOR JOE P. Tamie Amburgey Kendall Back Lori Back Connie Baker Bob Barton Lisa Berry Jeff Botts Sherrie Bowman Anita Collinsworth Tammy Jo Conlee Roy Byrd Harley Dougherty Shawn Dyer Kim Ferrell Lisa Ferrell Melanie Ferrell § § RISING UP AND LOOKING BACK § § This is the Senior Class of 1986. I keep telling myself that as I look at all of my friends. In reality, all I can think about is how everyone looked on our very first day of school twelve years ago. I've had a lot of dreams of my future over these past twelve years. I've shed a lot of tears and weathered a lot of disappointments. That's what growing ud is all about, though. Now that I've made it to the top, there are a lot of decisions to be made. I can no longer put things off by saying, There's always next year. I know what I want from myself. This is my last chance to make everything I do the best it can be. This is the most important chance for us to all prove ourselves as matur- ing adults. We are America's future. We make a difference. Being a senior is an important step on the ladder. It's the end of an era. When graduation comes, we'll begin a whole new life with a whole new group of people. It's like starting all over again. I know that when you're a fresh- man, you think you've got it made. I remember thinking that because I was in high school, I knew it all. I was wrong. I learned a lot from my friends and, believe it or not, from my teachers! You do a lot of growing up your junior and senior years. To the freshmen, I'd like to leave this piece of advice .... Please take it from someone who's been there. Slow down, enjoy life as it happens. Don't be afraid to listen to other people; it's better than having only yourself to listen to. And finally, don't rush through high school. The end comes soon enough! By Susan Smallwood Future Belly Dancers Spare me, Susan. Pushing the pencil has never been an easy job ! Wonder if there is a law against COMPUTER ABUSE !!!??? Tracy, you'll never make the team on the sidelines. Miss Universe 1837 BEING A JUNIOR When becoming a junior, we naturally expect more privileges. Before getting these privileges, we must prove we are ready for them and that we deserve them. We can do this by taking our responsibilities, which also come with being a junior, seriously and proving to other people that we can handle these responsibilities. By giving us these responsibilities, people are telling us they think we can do them and that they can depend on us. We will obtain the privileges that we have strived for and looked forward to all through school. One responsibility that we rarely think of is that of a role model. We should set examples for younger students. It makes us feel good when others say that they can't wait to become juniors and to be like us. This should make us look at ourselves and remember that what we do now may affect others in their future. We should also have self-respect. If we respect ourselves, others will respect us. If we are proud of the things we do, others will be proud of them, but if we don't care about ourselves, others won't care either. While juniors we have to start thinking about our futures and what we want to do. We must start thinking about college and careers. We have to start making a place for ourselves in the future because it won't be long before we are trying to make our way in the world. All juniors look forward to basically the same things: dances, ballgames, prom, and best of all becoming a senior. We want to enjoy ourselves while in school because when we graduate, our old friends may not remember each other and think of all the good times we've had. -- Melinda Bryant BEING A FRESHMAN Making up is the fun part. To me, being in the ninth grade marks the start of a very important journey, which is in four separate stages. Each one being very important to the total outcome. Whether it be good or bad, the outcome is entirely up to the student. The four years of high school are probably four of the most important years of a person's life. A per- son learns much more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic during his four years here. He learns how to get along with people and to make friends; and if he’s real lucky, he might have people in his class as good as I do in mine. That's only if he's really lucky. As in most things, there will be many ups and downs during the person's time here; but it all depends on the person as to how he handles it. With all the great teachers and students we have here, I don't see how a person could go wrong. There are many advantages to going to a smaller school like Menifee. You get to know the people better and you get more help from the teachers. If the student tries hard and properly spends his time, his four years here will be of great benefit in the future, and the friends he makes will be for a lifetime. —David Bryant BEING A SOPHOMORE I think back on elementary days and remember rid- ing the school bus home. Wishing I was in high school, I would sit as close to the big high school kids as I could. I now look around myself and find the surroundings of a high school. I am sitting in a classroom, a tenth grade classroom! I am a Sophomore! This year is the only chance I will have to be a tenth grader. My life is filled with childish fun, teenage excite- ment, and adult thrills. It is great to finally be an upperclassman. Being a sophomore, I can look up to the seniors and look down on the freshmen. Being a sophomore, I can say dingy sophomore things and say intellectual sophomore things. It is great to be a sophomore. Jenifer Back_______ Look out, Linda is learning to drive. Mr. Chandler never has caught me cheating. We know we look terrible, but we just got off work. A tremendous amount of work went into this year's yearbook. Approximately seven thousand dollars was needed to publish the yearbook. In addition to selling yearbooks, money was raised by selling ads to businesses in and around Menifee County. Thanks to a lot of hard work by the staff and the kind sup- port of businesses and individuals, more than the needed amount was raised. The staff began work in August and met the final deadline on February 13 to make this yearbook possible. The sponsors of the yearbook are Elaine Brown, teacher of the journalism class, and Mary Sue Snedegar, teacher of the Typing II class. 88 Photographers: Tony Nienaber and MarGenia Issac Valerie Culbertson Advertising Manager Loretta Williams Business Manager Susan Smallwood Assistant Editor Jennifer Brewer Editor YEAR IN REVIEW NEWSPAPER STAFF Pictured kneeling: Priscilla Baker, Sherrie Bowman, Susan Smallwood, Valerie Culbertson, Tammy Conlee, dacque Ferrell, Charlotte Tufono, and Martha Back. But thanks to several dedicated people we’ve seen this year through and put together what we consider to be one of the best year- books ever. I’d like to thank the staff who have put in many long, hard hours to finish this year's book. Also, I'd like to thank the advertisers and people who have purchased books, because without their support the book would not be possible. Because of their support, we have been able to maintain the size of the book even though our costs soared. Mr. Steve Bayko, our principal, Mrs. Chan Handy, his secretary, and the faculty have been very helpful and patient. Mr. Dennis Davis has been extremely helpful in helping us develop pictures. He donated photographic paper and chemicals to help us reduce the cost. I'd like to thank them for their time. Walsworth Publishing Company also deserves our thanks. Their representative, Mr. John Stanko, and his secretary, Juanita, were always ready to assist us when we needed help. Now, I would like to extend the warmest thanks to our two advisors, Mrs. Elaine Brown and Mrs. Mary Sue Snedegar. For without their experience and kind help we could never have done such a good job. For the past few years they have given much of their time and understanding, and this year has been no exception. Finally, I'd like to say thank you to the advisors and staff for having faith in me to give me the honor of being editor. The job has made my senior year much more memorable. I hope that you, our readers, are as pleased with this year- book as we are. 172 mWALS WORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY MARCKLINC MISSOURI (HA I _ . mWALS WORTH PUBLISHING COM PA N Y MARrCLINK MIHNOt'ftl V H A
