The trophy is from Louisville Sacred Heart, where Menifee placed 2nd. The fileboxes became a team trademark, being lugged around school and to tournaments. By season’s end. the team had accumulated six thousand evidence cards, which they used during rounds to prove their arguments. Menifee County returned to varsity debate competition this year for the first time since 1962. Superintendant Hiram Walters hired Dan Omlor from the University of Kentucky where he had been assistant debate coach. At various times through the school year. Nan Adams, Dreama Morris, Diane Smith. Tammy Ballard and Mitzi Blankenship were active in the program. But Jeff Spradling, Gary Williams, Steve Powell and Steve Robertson became the four consistent debaters through the season. Menifee participated in major tournaments at Georgetown, Paducah, Covington, Nashville, (Tenn.). Louisville Sacred Heart, Shepardsville, Lexington Henry Clay, and Louisville St. Xavier. Season highlights were the University of Pittsburgh Tournament in Pennsylvania over Thanksgiving and the UK Round Robin at Christmas. By year's end, Menifee had won several trophies and achieved fifth place ranking among Kentucky schools. Spradling ranked eighth in individual speaking, with Gary Williams tenth. A major disappointment was the regional tournament at Morehead, in which Montgomery County eliminated Menifee in the finals. However, none of the debaters were seniors and prospects for 1979 looked good. 61 Bookkeeping Class On February 24. 1978, Mrs. Elaine Brown had as guest speaker for her Bookkeeping Class Mr. William Lamb. Manager of the Menifee Branch of the Trader’s National Bank. Mr. Lamb’s general topic concerned Three Bank Services. They include (1) opening a checking account. (2) reconciling a bank statement, (3) and savings accounts. Pictured at left: Mrs. Brown, Bookkeeping teacher, and Guest Speaker, Mr. William Lamb. Mr. Lamb addressing the class.
