Vloe Rollins, came the joy of seeing another line Tro- jan squad win the North Central Illinois Cionlierence championship. It was the seventh consecutive win for Lewis-coached Trojan teams. XVith the windup of the 1955 football season there was a great deal of recognition given to mem- bers of the squad. On the All-Conference first team were: Ray rlauch. Bill Brown. Bob Bradshaw. Elwood Schlesinger. Ken Gehler. Gordon Inman, Clayton lfrey. and Bob Bumba. lfred Hanley and Bill Dickey were on the second team. and Howard Becker re- tcix ed honorable mention. Ray .Iauch was placed on the All-State tirst team. and Ken Gehler. Ifred Han- ley. and Bill Brown received honorable mention. Much credit. according to the eoaches. must be gn en to the substitutes for their line work on both the practice and playing field. As a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. so it is with a football team and its weakest player. Coach Lewis was very much pleased with this years substitutes and the way they developed as the season progressed. The ex- perience. lor them. was invaluable. for it is from this group that many ol' next year's regulars will be thosen. Leiser COACH IOHN RICHARDSON took over the duties of coaching and teaching a group of freshmen this iS season. Most of them had never worn a football suit. On October 28. the freshmen played host to a strong St. Bede team. The game was a real thriller right up to th: end. The score at the end of the game remained at 0-0. a well-played contest. They came back the next week to beat a stubborn Rochelle team by a 7-0 score. The third game of the season was played at Dixon, and the boys received the short end of the stick by a I4 to 7 score. Side by Side l 85Al'l'l6ll'l g00t66J Mendotas freshmen then played another home game. this time with DeKalb. The freshmen were unable to take any advantage of their own breaks. and for the second time in the season they tied 0-0. The freshmen journeyed next to Princeton, where they were beaten 6 to 0 in a well-fought battle. The game was hard-fought and seemed destined to be another 0-0 game, but the Princeton Tigers came through with a touchdown. The windup of the Freshman SS football season came with a 7-0 win over the Hall Red Devils on Mendotas home field. The freshmen won two. lost two, and tied two --- a well-rounded season. The boys that played this year did a good job, and their experience should be of unlimited value next year. ayfee goofdaf L HXLJHIIW I IL IL ILLI IL NNIN LL R Ll L NLJII LIIL LI SIIL L IN Il L N L N IO I I Get a Kick Out of You L N IN LO LI FL LIIIILI NNLL IX NL OfL L LI L N L L Lk ISLL AL IL X LIL L NS LL ILILII LILIIT N I H I N IL OI VIOIIL N JFLL IXKILL XXL L LIII I L IL LN ILLII hlllgl L N N INtItr IN N IIILLJIIIL I N ITL LIIII ILL N IFLI L L if 1 VONI III L LX LXLII LL L 'xt N I K. While the weather stayed nice, we played hockey. We had quite a few girls go out for hockey. On October 7, 1955, the GAA had the dog house for the game with Geneseo. Then. for Homecoming. ,454 Mary Ann Rollins and Sharon Wfhitmore were co- chairmen of our float. For a theme they chose ll e'I! llivrlfi All Ozer Them. During the winter months Miss Dunlap arranged with the oiiice that the GAA could have the use of the gym every Tuesday from 5:15 to 4:15. This is the tirst year we have had the use of the gym and a lot of girls took advantage of it by playing basket- ball and volley ball. The annual Heart Sister Week was held February 6-10. The informal initiation was held February 15. Then on Valentines Day we had our banquet and formal initiation at the Methodist Church. There were twenty-five new members. It was a big success and everyone enjoyed herself. This completed our activities in GAA. Every girl had a lot of fun, even if she did get bumps and bruises playing the different games. BACK ROXW: Vl. Merriman IT LOOKED AS THOUGH the Trojans were in for a disastrous season, as playing with only one hold- over from last year's starting five, they lost their first five games to taller opponents. Hard work and team spirit told the , , story, however. and by the end of the season the Trojans had clinched third place in the N.C.I.C. Conference. Mendota's Trojans opened their season on No- vember 29 on the home court. Earlville's Red Raiders downed them by a 56 to 35 score. Many weak points were detected by our new Varsity Coach, Verdie Altizer. We traveled to Ottawa the following Friday to play Marquette Highs Crusaders. Marquette had a slight edge on us at the end of the gameg the final score was 56 to 48. The next night found Mendota playing hosts to a straight-shooting Morris team. Although the Tro- jans staged a terrific fourth-quarter rally, -- in which they outscored the Redskins 26 to 15 - they were forced to bow down to the opponents' heavy lead and accept the 76-63 defeat. For the second time in the season Mendota With a Hoop and o Holler fljamify Z?a:5LefLa! traveled out of town. St. Bede's Academy was the destination. Mendota put up a terrific battle, and at half-time our boys were trailing by a mere 3 points. As the game wore on the superior height of the Bruins began to pay off. The final score was 71 to 55, with St. Bede on top. On Friday night, Dec. 9, Mendota played host ro the Marseilles Panthers. For the first time in the 55-56 season, Mendota emerged victoriousg the final score was an impressive 73-45. The following Friday night saw the Trojans, now in stride. travel to Princeton and hand the Tigers a 63-61 defeat. The game, an exciting overtime thriller, did much to build up both fan enthusiasm and team spirit. Marquettes Christmas Tournament was the next scheduled event, and Mendota drew the heavily favored De Pue Giants as their first round oppo- nents. De l'ue's 75-64 loss came as quite a surprise to many. Morris. who earlier in the year had de- feated us by a 76-63 score, had won their round and were to face us Thursday night. Thursday night found the Mendota quintet in fine form as they clashed with the Morris Redskins. The outcome of the game, a 60-55 win for Mendota, sent Q Ray -lauth storing a layup in the first quarter against tht- Dt-Kalb liarbs. Mendota edged Barbs 6-l to 62, No. 55 is Hill l'ii'own. They were defeated in their opening game with St. Bede by a score of 28 to 22. The second game Playmcnes was a close contest with Ottawa that our freshmen team lost 36-34. Hall of Spring Valley handed our team their 3rd straight loss with a 34 to 16 score. Princeton was the next opponent and they too defeated our freshmen team. by a score of 'll to 2-4. Ottawa followed up their earlier season victory with a 51 to 32 win. Mendota was edged in her sixth game by a 29 to 27 score at the hands of the I.. P. Cavaliers. St. Bede invaded MHS for the seventh game of the year and defeated the freshmen -49 to 51. Stung by their earlier losses of the season and with the help of some added material. the boys handed Hall a 55 to 47 defeat. for their first win. Amboy was next in line and the Mendota team rolled over them with a 5' to 55 score. Princeton came to Mendota hoping to repeat the easy 41 to 24 victory which she accomplished earlier in the season. They were denied this victory and handed the short end of a 55 to 43 walloping. Although the team didnt turn in a flawless sea- son. their win-loss schedule shows a definite in- crease in playing ability as the season wore on. Mr. Davies OUR SENIOR YEAR is coming to a close rather rapidly now. and we all look back on those four wonderful years with their many memories. At times it has been a struggle for our class, especially this year when we had so much money to raise for the year- book. The three people who will never forget this year are our class officers. Roger Gulick as president, Dolores Budach vice-president, and Nancy Dana as secretary-treasurer. These people took great responsibility in leading the :lass through the many activities of the year. I don't think some of us will ever forget the times we have worked at football and basketball games. Selling popcorn. ice cream. pop, and candy seems a very hard way to make all the money you need for putting out a yearbook. Our faithful candy sellers. Leon Stremlau. jerry Galloway. john Boyle. and Wlayne Etheridge, who worked every noon. certainly deserve a big thank-you from all of us. XY'e also should thank our tine advisors. Miss Breese. Miss Suivan, Mrs. Doenier. Mr. Doenier, and Mr. Davies, foriall their counseling and advice during this year. Miss Breese has been a great help in get- ting our yearbook out. XY'ithout her co-operation .ind guidance it would have been impossible. Marilyn Bansau and Dennis XY'ood as Queen and King of Homecoming will never forget this year. We were all verv proud to have the Queen and King from our class. Pat Mtfionville and -lohn Hood were Memories are Made of This .cle enior gfazki 0196 the senior attendants. S1111 In lf'lt'lUl 't was the theme of our float for the Homecoming parade. A lot of us surely had fun working on it. There were some other very busy people at Homecoming time also. The Student Council members. jean Elsesser. president, JoAnn Vogelsang. vice-president. Elizabeth Nims, secretary-treasurer, Bruce Boyle. Don Parks, Barbara Tentler and Dorothy Larabee. worked hard decorat- ing the gym for the dance and getting the parade lined up. Our senior boys will have many wonderful memo- ries of their days in high school athletics. This year. for the seventh time, our football team won the conference title. Ray jauch was named to the All State team. Ken Gehler. Gordan Inman, Elwood Schlesinger, Ray jauch, Fred Hanley, and Clayton lfrey were named to the All-Conference Squad. There were quite a few boys out for cross country, basketball, and track also. who helped make the sports season at MHS successful. Isabel Bruck and Nancy Dana were doing their best. cheering for our boys at the football and basket- ball games. They put in long hours of practice and came up with some new cheers and .1 lot of real good school spirit. GAA has always been .1 great interest for our senior girls. This year Marilyn Bansau was president and -IoAnn Vogelsang was vice-president. Deanna Childers and jean Garrity served as members of the Board. Many other girls will remember the many happy hours they spent after school. UL.: '..f1l'T tiass play. Dolores liudath, as yiee-president, Dorothy Larahee, as seere- tary. and Naney Xwillard. as degree ehairinan. There were eiuite a few seniors in the mixed ehorus and ehoir, Donna Kilhurn, Pat Mefonyille. and Deanna Childers will never forget singing together as a trio, They worked xe-ry hard and sounded well together, Donna even did some solo work, The seniors on the Hi-Light staff will always reineinher their experientes as reporters, They all had a great interest in the work they were doing. As a result, we all enjoyed an interesting Hi-Light. Irene Rieh. Isahel Brutk, and Phyllis XY'.1tson took interest in sywet h this year and we-nt to Speeth Con- test. Elizabeth Nims. Bill Burke. Bill Greenwood, and Connie Chandler did a fine iob in the Contest lilay this year. Allred Vitkery was the inake up artist and Phyllis XY'.itson was there tu yironipt when she was needed. Both plays were direeted by Mr. XY'arren and sup- ported hy a tine east of amateur attors and aetresses. Re-ealling our junior year. we re-mernher how hard we worked on our prom. We all agreed it was fun spending a night in Gay Paree' eating and daneing. Our otfiters, john Van Horn, president, jean Garrity, xite-president, and Isahel Bruek. seeretary-treasurer. were responsible largely for the sueeess of our play and prom, Now in turn, this year we were guests of the iuniors at a xery lovely prom.
