Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1987 volume:

1 The 1987-1988 school year was filled with students and staff involved in daily activities just for the fun of it. Although, at times, students were not ready to admit to the fun times had during class all would say life wasn't too bad. Fun times were had during dances and sports events. School began with new staff and a new arrangements for junior I high. Time passed quickly and it seemed only days until Christmas break arrived. Students returned in two weeks to prepare for semester exams. The second semester went by quickly and it was time to get ready for final exams. All these things helped students have a year of activities just for the fun of it . . . just for the thrill of it. 2 SPECIAL MRS. B. When writing about this lady, it was hard to know where to start, So, I went to all her friends, for thoughts from their hearts. When asked for just a few words to pull together for this, Most of them sent back a very long list. From all of the thoughts presented to me, Following are just a few describing Mrs. B. Love, dedication, inspiration, and sharing, A SUPER TEACHER , good friend, and above all, caring. She is trustworthy, dependable, gentle, yet tough, Everyone said she helps them when the going gets rough. You could count on her to bring us goodies to eat, Ray's carmel corn was always a special treat. Celia's talent for crafts and painting is hard to equal. Almost as soon as one is finished, she comes out with a sequel. Throughout the years, the students were her principle concern, She provided the knowledge, so they could all learn. The students will remember her fairness a long time from now. Her commitment to teaching, deserves from us, a big bow. Whenever a special prayer was needed, to her, you just had to call, Then, she would send it on a Hot Line to GOD. Through many years of dedication Mrs. Celia Beougher served the students and community of the Mendon-Umon district. Mrs. Beougher's talents were appreciated in many ways. The learning disabilities program got its start through the special efforts of Mrs Beogher. Her dedication and the love she gave to her students and colleagues will be missed for many years Everyone's lives she has touched through the years, We'll miss her laughter and kindness, with a few tears. Now the time has come for her to retire, and from the school part. But, we want her to know that for her, a spot will always be reserved in our hearts. By: Marty Heck 3 Clipper Staff 1987 We hope you enjoy the 1986-1987 edition of the Mendon-Union Clipper. Hard work and dedication went into producing a fine product. We thank each staff member of their hard work and hope that you find our yearbook one of the best ever. From the daily chores of school operation to the planning of special events the administrators gave each their special attention. Decisions were made which shaped the atmosphere of the educational system making Mendon-Union a better place. Walls took on a special look as the administration oversaw painting and art work. Programs were planned which enlightened students life. These tasks and many more filled the days and evenings of our administrative staff. Principal; Casey Nuttle Superintendent: Jerome F. A special thank-you goes to the dedication of Dora and her staff. Bus driver: Kenny John Bus drivers: Larry Giese and Irene Thatcher A special cargo was carried to and from the Mendon-Union school by the bus drivers at Mendon. Students learn the basics of reading, writing, and arithmatic. School isn't all books and no fun. Special activities such as Halloween dress-up day, math- athons, right-to-read activities and World Book readathon add to the excitement of elementary life. Elementary children prepare for the continuation of school during junior high. Students hard at work. Even Geography can be fun. Terri helps students with spelling. It was a year filled with excitement and good times. Students shared common memories of hectic days which started with crawling out of a comfortable bed and ended with the three o'clock bell. Scholastically the school year was successful. The scholastic bowl team proved themselves to be stiff competitors. The marching band showed everyone that they deserved the recognition given a fine band. The choir demonstrated their fine talents through enjoyable concerts. Sports played a key role in making our school year a profitable one. TONY 37 From the beginnings in kindergarten through the end of high school, this year's senior class saw many changes. Little boys and girls, dependent on others, grew to be self-sufficient men and women. Clothing styles changed from cuffed blue jeans and tennis shoes to faded jeans and unlaced high tops. Hair styles shortened for the boys and became more free-looking for the girls. By the time their senior year came, sculptured hair, jams, and old-fashioned shoes were the new fad. Seniors anxiously awaited their day. Twelve years had passed from that first day in first grade, and on May 31, 1987 this years senior class became a part of Men-don-Union's memory. These students had spent many years preparing for their futures. From 180 days left in their high school career to graduation many decisions faced them Senior pictures had to be taken, announcements ordered, senior memory books filled in with autographs and interests before this eventful year ended. These individual activities were enjoyed by all. Class meetings were held where seniors chose the class motto, song, flowers, and colors. As the year wound down decisions had to be made as to whether or not graduates were going to college or finding a job. All these things ended an eventful and fulfilling high school career. 39 If You Think ... If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think that you dare not, you don't, If you'd like win, but you think you can't It's almost certain you won't. If you think you'll lose, you've lost, For out in the world you'll find Success begins with a fellow's will — It's all in the state of mind. If you think you are out-classed, you are; You've got to think high to rise; You've got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. Life's battles don't always go To the stronger or faster man; But sooner or later the man who wins Is the man who thinks he can. — Author Unknown. A LITTLE BIT OF JAPAN Natsuko Soto Natsuko Sato came to Mendon from a suburb in Tokyo, Japan. While attending Mendon High she became involved in student life. She became a part of the choir and the basketball team. Although Natsuko was quiet she enjoyed the excitement of being a fan at sporting events. Natsuko met many new people and made friends with them. Her difficulty with the language didn't seem to stop her from fitting into school life. While our new found friend was only here a short time many students and staff accepted her as one of our own. 40 Special times at Mendon highlighted another exciting year. Student life was made more enjoyable with Halloween dress-up. Participants dressed in their favorite costumes to entertain anxious overlookers. Homecoming festivities made student life more interesting. Queen candidates, escorts, and the student body became involved in the fun. Juniors honored their senior guests with a masquerade party. Giant masks transformed the gym into a ballroom. The special times ended with the senior's final farewell. Graduation drew another year to a successful close. Who said Shakespeare was here? On January 20 anxious junior and senior high students cast ballots for the queen and her attendants. Afternoon announcements revealed the Homecoming royalty: Teresa Now, Tracy Davis, Pam Williams, Paula Stant, Heidi Laux, and Jennifer Fox. The following weeks were filled with anticipation. Students anxiously awaited the announcement of the senior girl would reign over the dance on Saturday night. 1987 Basketball fans watched as outgoing queen, Debbie Grieshop, crowned Pam Williams as the new queen. The queen and her court posed, as proud parents snapped pictures. Pam Williams and her escort, Jeff Snider, led the court to the royal seats where they reigned over the festivities. 43 Queen, Pnm Williams 1986 Queen Crowns 1987 Queen Jennifer Fox and escort Scott Edgecomb Heidi Laux and escort Danny Stant Paula Stant and escort Steve Baldauf HOMECOMING Dancers enjoy a quiet moment Which one do you pick? One in every crowd. Spirit week is a week full of tun and excitement to raise the school spirit of the student body. The cheerleaders, both J.V. and Varsity, spent many Saturday afternoons and endless hours after school organizing this special week. The week started on Monday with Sweat day and the motto Make the Wildcats sweat. On Tuesday students saw the best of the worst, as the student body participated in Nerd day. Also the upperclassmen bought the freshman and sophomores as their personal slaves. On Wednesday, the Hawaiian in all of us came out as we saw the best of the beach bums. Also, the freshman and sophomores had their chance at revenge as the upperclassmen were auctioned off as slaves. Thursday was the day of the Varsity girl's tournament so everyone dressed in their Sunday Best. On Friday, everyone showed their school spirit by dressing up in their best blue and gold. Everyone participated in the musical chairs either as an active participant or as an observant watcher. Later that day, the student body participated in the pep assembly, organized by the cheerleaders. Here, names were drawn to cream the coaches with whipped cream filled plates. The whipped cream filled plates were rubbed on the faces of our favorite coaches. How did it feel Mr. Nuttle, Mr. Humerickhouse, Mr. Woeste, and Mr. Rasawehr? Was it a sticky situation? 47 Only Julie knows where the camera is. But mommy told me never to let it go to my head. Ghouls, ghosts, gobblins, and various other costumed individuals crowded into the gymnasium to frighten and entertain an anxious audience. Students who wore costumes paraded on the gym floor while a panel of judges chose the best costumes. The class with the most participants was awarded a delicious cake. Halloweeners in grades seven through twelve were judged as a group. Overall winners for the best costume were cone-heads Nicole Brown and Valerie Engle. Farmer Brown, Molly, and Bossie, alias Holly Steiner, Brian Boroff, and Puka, took second honors, while Mike Dicke, dressed in drag, copped third place. HALLOWEEN FUN On May 16th the cold dark walls of the Mendon High School Gym were transformed into a Midnight Masquerade. The gym was filled with the sound of today's recent hits, played by the Z-Man. Everyone enjoyed getting down to that high tech sound. At midnight the dance was history and everyone went to the Lake Front Racquet and Health Club in Celina, until six o'clock A.M. Conditioning started the season for two hours everyday for a couple of weeks before our first game, while others were getting back into the swing of school again. It was a struggle to keep our energy level up when there were three matches to be played against a tuff teom in the M.A.C. or F. A C. The record was not indicative of individuals success one such success was the win over the New Noxville Rangers our first win in the M A C. in several years. The Lady Pirates were led by Seniors: Terri Clay, Julie Boley, Tracy Davis, Patricia Krick, Teresa Now, and Pam Williams who tried their hardest to keep team spirit up though out the unfortunate season. The J.V. team started out with a few setbacks, but in the end they made the most of their situation meant they had a better season than they had expected of themselves and the coach As their season progressed each team member learned to play together to make a team If they keep playing as a team it will be an even better season next year. Although they didn't win many games, they played with heart throughout the whole season. Starting practice in November, the girls had to adjust to their new coaches. Coach Miller, and Coach Sutton. After a month of practice the girls opened their season and continued their good play until the end of the season. Kneeling: Paula Stant, Sharron Godwin, Shaune Kline, Heide Laux, Emily Ziegen-busch. Standing: Jennifer Fox, Annesa Hamilton, Jill Emans, Holly Steiner, and Coach Ann Sutton. It helps if you leave your eyes open, Michelle. Emily drives down the lane. Missy brings the ball up court. 66 Kneeling: Paula Stant, Tracy DAvis, Sharon Kill, Teresa Now, Pam Williams, Holly Steiner. Standing Coach Don Miller, Diana Trisel, Michelle Derossett, Jennifer Kill, Kelly Duff, Heide Laux, Jill Emans, and Asst. Coach Miller. 67 Kneeling: Asst. Coach Rasawehr and Coach Humerickhouse. Standing: Brian Boroff, Tom George, Scott Edgecomb, Eric Goodwin, Doug Frey, John Hesse, John Crider, Mike Koesters, John Emans, Mike Heck, Danny Stant, and Scotty Mayes. Looking for the open man. 68 Boy's Basketball This year the Pirates went 4 and 17, but the record doesn't reflect how hard the boys worked. Starting the last two weeks of October they were in the gym at 6:00 in the morning for conditioning, preparing themselves for their first game against Crestview. After overcoming many obstacles in the middle of the season the team performed its best at Ridgemont and from then on they didn't lose their composure. The J.V. record was 5 and 14. They were hurt because key players on the J.V. team were needed to play half of the varsity game and at times were greatly at a disadvantage. The Heckster intimidates the Blue Jays. Somebody stop that ball. Trapped with no place to go. 69 Girls Softball The 1987 Mendon-Union High School Girls Softball team completed their regular season with a 5-6 record. They were led by Coach Linda Wilson. Teresa Now led the team in hits with a batting average of .533. Most stolen bases went to Tracy Davis with Jennifer Kill following closely behind. Sharon Kill came away with the most RBI's, while her sister Jennifer was voted best defensive player. Kari McGillvary was chosen most improved player for the second year in a row. Although their record was 5-6, the girls ended their season with a feeling of accomplishment and hope for the coming season. The Junior Class of Mendon-Union I ligh School is thankful for its educational chances. The class, over the course of many years of work hopes to graduate and use their skills for the betterment of society. During the 1987 school year, they oversaw the planning and building of the 1987 prom — Midnight Masquerade'', nothing that the class did would have been attained without the help of the teaching staff and many friends. The class of 1988 wishes the graduating seniors good luck in the future and thanks them for all the memories. Getting into the swing of things was no problem for the Sophomores as their second year of high school was soon underway. They faced many new roles and responsibilities. The classes may have been a little tougher, but the pressures from the upperclassman were not as great. They found that they breathed a little easier when they passed the older kids in the hall, knowing that because they were SOPHOMORES they would not get picked on (or at least not as much). Many found their sophomore year as an in-between year. They did succeed in finding their place as the year progressed. This was done by closing the memorable doors to the past, while at the same time opening many new doors to an exciting future. Students started the year on the bottom of the totem pole, but worked their way up before long. They soon realized life as a freshmen wasn't so bad. Although the freshmen year seemed like starting all over again, the time flew by quickly and they were soon anticipating the thrill of being a sophomore. Come on guys!
