While every goal has not yet been met and conquered, we have made progress and we are hopeful that success will come to our students as adults, the true test of education. 2 CO FIGHT SONG We're the Mendon Pirates That you hear so much about. We will show you how to score In basketball and shout Rah! Rah! Rah! We will dribble do-wn the floor. Then we'll show you ho-ow to score. Hail! Hail! For Mendon High — We're the best team in the land. GO! FIGHT! GO! FIGHT! WIN! VICTORY Victory! Victory! Victory! I HAIL, ALMA MATER Hail, Alma Mater, Fill our hearts with singing. Colors of blue and gold, Hear our voices ringing. Firm is our faith in thee Through defeat and victory. Hail Thee, oh Mendon High! On the job. Mrs. Maurer ... In the beginning. A bell opens a new year at Mendon-Unlon as it has done for many years. The lady responsible for the ringing of the traditional bell is Mrs. Maurer. Students over the many years look back on their high school careers with fondest memories of the lady who taught them all about English and William Shakespeare. Teachers and staff hold her in high regard. She not only teaches the subject matter, but she shows her students how to be productive, successful individuals. We owe Mrs. Maurer, a special lady, many thanks for her many years of unselfish dedication to her students and school. A special lady. 5 Hard at work. 1986 Clipper Staff Staff meets new challenges The 1986 Clipper yearbook staff took on a new experience this year. The staff had the challenge of designing each and every page themselves. Designing the yearbook pages meant greater creativity and self expression, but, it also meant spreading much more time and working much harder on a book that all of the Mendon community could be proud of. The staff consisted of fifteen students from the high school. Miss Julie Scott, the junior high language teacher, was the advisor for the 1986 book. She spent many hours after school to make sure all deadlines we've met and that the book stayed within the budget. The putting together of a yearbook takes much more time and effort than anyone can imagine. This book is a history of the 1985, 1986 school year and we on the Clipper staff hope you enjoy this addition of the Clipper yearbook. Enjoying themselves before the work begins 6 Herff Jones Rep Don Dickey How many pages are due by 4:00? Advisor Julie Scott smiles as another deadline is met. Julie is being sponsored by the Women's Civic Club, from Mendon. The American Legion Auxiliary Post 210 from Celina and the Women's Civic Club interviewed interested Juniors. Together with input from the guidance counselor and faculty they chose Julie as the delegate and Tracy Davis to be her alternate. If Julie would be unable to attend, Tracy would be the delegate. The purpose of Girl's State is to educate young women in the duties, privileges, right and responsibilities of American citizenship; with special emphasis upon the contribution women can make to the welfare of the city, county, state, and nation. John Emans and Dennis Kohorst BOYS STATE From June 14 to June 21 John Emans will be attending Buckeye Boy's State at Bowling Green State University. The Coldwater American Legion will be sponsoring John who will be participating in this annual event. In the unlikely event that John cannot attend Dennis Kohorst has been chosen as his alternate. At Boy's State John will learn about how a state should be run. Elections will be held, with many young people campaigning for their choice of office. Some will not be elected to the office of their choice, but there are many jobs available and they will find a suitable occupation. Boy's State is a place where the delegates will learn about the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilites of American Citizenship. Delegates will have an opportunity to learn the problems of government, with special emphasis upon the contribution men can make to the welfare of the city, county, state, and nation. 27 Underclassmen 28 29 Student Council: Seated: Superintendent Mr. Schacht, President Brian Boroff, Vice President Scott McMicheal, Principle Mr. Nuttle. Valedictorian, Terry Krogman and Salutatorian Tony Norris delivered well written speeches which reflected the sentiments of their fellow classmates. Each graduate proudly accepted the lambskin which signified the completion of twelve years of their lives. The students will now begin their journey as adults. Many will seek their fortune, through further education or employment. The student body, faculty, administration, and community wish each individual luck and prosperity with each endeavor. 53 CONGRA TULA TIONS! 54 55 GRADUATES Mr. Schacht is arrested. Reach into the grab bag and pull out what vou wish whether it be smiles and laughter, joy and happiness or misery and sorrow, tears and disappointment. Reach in and pull out friendship and companionship for a true friend will stand beside you at all times and no matter what happens whether good or bad there will be someone who will understand. Reach in and pull out freedom and securin'. Now are difficult times for us. We want freedom to do as we wish yet we need the security of home and we rely on it during these difficult times. Reach in the grab bag and pull out logic and reason. Now comes a time for us to mold convictions and make judgments. We must choose our path, discover our direction, and shape our future. We will exercise these powers and reach for the stars. Reach in and pull out inspiration and creativity. Inspiration to strive toward our destiny and to seek to discover a meaning and a purpose in life, and creativity to create a world where everyone can peacefully live the life they choose. And most important of all reach in the grab-bag and pull out love for love is the universal language and the basis of all understanding. Our life is like a grab-bag. There are manv opportunities for each and everv one of us. All we have to do is reach for them, grasp them, and then make the most of them. 65 66 Sports 67 Varsity Volleyball. The cross country team was started by a junior high student Jason Sutter, who was really interested in the sport of running. Jason with the help of his mother, Bev Sutter, organized the 85-86 team. Many hard weeks of vigorous training were needed to get the runners into shape before their first meet. The cross country trail was a rocky one for both runners and coach. The team worked hard and seemed never to let pain and exhaustion get them down, but instead they used it to help them overcome their difficulties. The meets came and went, with each one runner they became stronger and faster and ran with more confidence in themselves and their team. Not many victories were known to this Pirate Team, but with every loss it seemed to make the runners work harder through the cross country season the only victory came against Marion. When you have an inexperienced team with inexperienced runners running against teams that have been running for many years you can't expect them to do well from the start. The inexperienced runners bounced back stronger from each defeat all the way to the end of the season where they gave it their best shot and won. Not only did they win a race, but they also won the respect from other teams. It just goes to show that this Pirate team did NOT give up, but pushed their hardest at the end. There is a saying that fits this team of Mendon-Union.
