90 Track Club A new group was formed this year for students interested in track and field events. The Track Club was open to all students, whether they were on one of Mendel's Cross Country or Track Teams or not. Maior impetus for the formation of the club came from the officers of the group: Ray Dozier, President, Derek Powell, Vice-President, Charles Ireland, Treasurer, and John Hammermeister, Secretary. Aviation Club Up in the sky! Look! Is it a bird? ls it a plane? No, it's Mendel's Aviation Club on another excursion into the wild blue yon- der. Besides learning how to fly a plane, the club also sponsors classroom instruction. Members of the club learn all about the history of the airplane: from birds to glid- ers to rockets to Johnathan Livingston Sea- gull. The fundamentals of navigation is another topic discussed in the ground school. Of course, the group makes frequent trips to the airport, where a plane is char- tered and the club members try their hand at flying. Following the intensive instruc- tion program, each member is then eligible for his private pilot's license following a written exam. 92 Mendel's Winged Warriors, otherwise known as the Birdmen of Mendel, include top to bottom, Brion Eugene Bell, Terry Butler, Steven Supallc, and Tim Vaclav.
