Student Senate Every year, the Student Senate is criticized for inactivity. This year, the representatives and class officers reversed that image. Towards the end of the first semester, Mendel seniors organized efforts to overcome student apathy. Although the movement died out after Christmas vacation, the initiative was made. The Student Lounge opened and a few other reforms were made. As usual, the Senate did a great iob in organizing student activi- ties like the proms and Homecoming. Underclassmen played an important role in the Senate this year. The iuniors, for example, decided to form a Grievance Committee. Black Students Union For the first part of the year, the Black Student Union was inactive until the dynamic Mr. Lovett took command of the organization. uespn infrequent meetings, the group was still able to accomplish something. The Black Student Union made plans for a few fund-raising activities and a dance. The quasi-political functions of the group were handle by a committee of seniors. Efforts were made to expand membership to all segments of the Black community around Mendel.
