The staff of the 1974 Monarch ioins the Mendel Administration and student body in honoring Mr. Lou Guida, a man who dedicated almost two decades of his life to Mendel. Mr. Guida retired this year as head football coach. Mr. Guida was Mendel's winningest coach. During his I4 year career as head football coach, Mr. Guida established him- self as the Dean of Catholic League coaches. His team took the City Champi- onship in 1968. Yet Mr. Guida was more than a coach. His dedication and love for Mendel has set an example for every member of the Men- del family.

Introduction To 1974 Monarch What is a yearbook? For one thing, it is not iust another public rela- tions media for the school, although it may serve that purpose. Nor is it an ego trip for students who try to get their picture on every page. Certainly the yearbook serves as a chronicle of our years in high school. Undoubtedly o yearbook will bring back memories, whether they be serious or humorous. Yet a yearbook is more than iust a history text. In the 1974 Mal gg, the staff has tried to capture in print and pictures the atmos- phere of a group of people working together for a common goal. Faculty and students striving for the same purpose, whether it be in studies, athletics, or other activities. The yearbook is a symbol of this unity. Fifteen or twenty years from now we might look through our yearbooks. We will, of course, laugh at our haircuts and appear- ance. And we will reminisce about old times. If the 1974 Monarch is successful we will remember all of these things and especially the unity of the Mendel family. 4
