g L... my 3 fi . Q c l A 1 gi si. , NN 0 . 'Q I gi P.F.C. XVM. GEIS, Mendel Graduate More my faint faefzrl witla grief, but wifb ffefighf' This February, for the first time, the savage reality of war came to Mendel. One of our Mendel men, PFC William C. Geis was killed during a helicopter mission in Viet Nam. At the news of Bill Geis, death, Mendel was silenced with sadness. In our grief, however, we were confronted by a strange delight. Bill Geis was not an ordinary young man for he made an unusual sacrifice. Already with our Armed Forces in Furope, Bill Geis volunteered for Viet Nam. For Bill, volunteering was nothing heroic. He did not feel that a married man or father should go when he could go a young man with no ties. A father or husband might leave someone alone to this world. Bill Geis would not likely admit it because for him it was an ordinary thing, but he exhibited an unselfishness and concern for others that often seems lost in this self-interested world. XVe hope that the students at Mendel find example in his selflessness. Those of us who are a part of Mendel are proud that we have shared a small part in the brief life of this young man. Wfe pray that in our own small way, we might have helped to instill this self- lessness which is the strength of our Church and Country. . .
