Francis X, Cavanaugh, O.S.A. His background in the Augustinian education Held is impressives Bachelor of Arts, Villanova University, Bachelor of Science in Ed- ucation, Villanova, where for a time he was a professor, Vice- Rector of Cascia Hall, Tulsa, Vice-Rector of St. Rita, 1952-l956, Rector of Mendel, i956-i959 and presently prior of Austin High, Detroit. Well known are Fr. Cavanaugh's efforts in sharpening to keen edge Mendel's system of academic achievement. The Mon- arch now acknowledges his contribution in this twin dedication. Rev. Martin J. O'Neill, OSA. Before taking his place in the forming of Mendel's history, Father has, since his ordination, been actively engaged in Augustinian educative enterprises. After finishing his graduate vvorlc at the Catholic University of America tovvard a Master's Degree in Sociology, Father was assigned to St. Rita High School, in Chicago. He next was appointed to the first faculty upon the founding of St. Monica Seminary in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. By Provincial appointment, he was assigned for a three year term as Procurator of Cascia Hall, Tulsa, Oklahoma. And for the next twelve years he acted in the capacity of Prefect of Studies and Assistant Head- master at Cascia Hall. Since i959 he has held the office of Rec- tor at Mendel. Under his capable and experienced leadership, Mendel has continued to advance in its contribution for the educa- tion of Catholic youth. REV. ALBERT HILLEBRAND, O.S.A. Vice-Rector. ROW 3: N Ahrens The Monarchs' football rocket looked fairly launched in its pre-season play . . . the Mendel men wrecked the Ramblers from Gordon Tech Ctheir engineering may be betterl by tallying a l2-2 decision over their North Side rival . . . and at Lane Tech Stadium by out-doing a dazed De Paul squad by an uncontested 22-O. Opening the season itself at Eckersall . . . the Mt. Carmel caravan rolled to a l4-O halt over our big team . . . and considering the close rivalry the score was only part of the defeat. Out after lions' meat hoofing around as the Leo nine luse dictionaries on punsl, Mendel's own Monarchs pulled to a l2-O lead, only to slip back to a l2-l4 lag at the half. A quick T.D. by Mendel was mainly smashed by two T.D.'s of Leo . . . the scale tipped 28-18 in favor of the felines. Trying to buck and bronco-bust the St. Rita Mustangs was not to be an easy iob, in spite of what will was there . . . Mendel's third successive set-back was a convincing 26-6. The load of the Loyola defeat Q2-ol could only be somewhat lightened by a go-go 103 yard run out of his own end zone by Pete Andreotti. lt only takes one sparkling, shifty play to make a game worth while. ln the Homecoming victory the Monarchs hit their pay dirt in the regular season. The shaggy, scraggly Wolves from Ignatius way were duly skinned Q6-O. With chins to the grindstone and the ground . . . to salvage what could be saved of a fast-waning season . . . and to slack a hunger for something more than Rice . . . mud covered Shewbridge Stadium proved to be no place for our lighter team to take another win . . . yet only a slim six points edged us out when a Brother Rice Crusader galloped eighty yards ifor his lady-love, we wonderl. There still are goodly rivals in them 'thar Beverly Hills. All in all there have been better seasons, percentage wise as the books all say, with three wins outweighed by five losses. The first was his birth in Lawrence, Massachusettes, on March 18, 1906, The second was his ordination on June 11, 1935, in the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. The third was his death on April 24, 1962, at Mendel. Half of Mendel's history as a school had been fathered under Father Winn during his six years as Prior for three of which he was also Procurator. While stationed for fourteen years at Cascia Hall in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he was likewise Procurator and Prefect of Discipline. From 1950 to 1953 he was procurator of St. Rita High School. In 1953 Father was made Procurator of St. Mary's Church, Rockford, Illinois, and in 1956 took up the couble post of Procurator and Prior of Mendel Catholic High School. When Father Winn passed the last milestone left in the life of a priest, he had only to receive what rewards were his from the Eternal High Priest, Jesus Christ. Rev. Frederick J. Winn, OSA Therefore, we must pray at all times for the souls of the departed, for thus shall we be charitable, thus shall we be kind and merciful, thus shall we ourselves escape an un- happy death.
