THE AUGUSTINIAN FAMILY The Augustinians, officially known as the Hermits of St. Augustine, are one of the four great Mendicant Orders of the Church. As their name indicates, they trace their origin back to St. Augustine of Hippo, the illustrious Doctor of the Church. St. Augustine, one of the best-known and best loved Saints, lived from 354 to 430. On Holy Saturday, 387, at the age of thirty-three, Augustine received the Sacrament of Baptism from the hand of St. Ambrose who had been instrumental in his conversion. Overioyed in the blissful possession of God's grace, Augustine dedicated his brilliant mind, firm will, and generous heart to the service of his religion and his God. After his return to his home in North Africa, Augustine established a monastic com- munity at Tagaste - the first Augustinian monastery. The principles of St. Augustine's re- ligious life are found in outline in his Rule. Hundreds of other religious communities besides the Augustinians follow his Rule today. Last year, the Augustinians marked the 700th anniversary of their Order as it exists today. The religious order received its jurisdictional form and organization in the year 1256 from the Papal pronouncement, Licet Ecclesiae, of Pope Alexander IV. Provision was made therein for the familiar organic structure: Prior General, Provincial Priors, and Priors of in- dividual communities. At present the Augustinians throughout the world number 2350 pri6SfS, 700 clerics, and 400 brothers. The T957 staff of Mendel's yearbook takes pride in saluting the Order and the reli- gious who have dedicated themselves to the service of God and humanity. They form an integral part of our family at Mendel, we, the students and families who receive so much from them, feel that we are an intimate part of the Augustinian family.
