As their name indicates, they trace their origin back to St. Augustine of Hippo, the illustrious Doctor of the Church. St. Augustine, one of the best-known and best loved Saints, lived from 354 to 430. On Holy Saturday, 387, at the age of thirty-three, Augustine received the Sacrament of Baptism from the hand of St. Ambrose who had been instrumental in his conversion. Overioyed in the blissful possession of God's grace, Augustine dedicated his brilliant mind, firm will, and generous heart to the service of his religion and his God. After his return to his home in North Africa, Augustine established a monastic com- munity at Tagaste - the first Augustinian monastery. The principles of St. Augustine's re- ligious life are found in outline in his Rule. Hundreds of other religious communities besides the Augustinians follow his Rule today. Last year, the Augustinians marked the 700th anniversary of their Order as it exists today. The religious order received its jurisdictional form and organization in the year 1256 from the Papal pronouncement, Licet Ecclesiae, of Pope Alexander IV. Provision was made therein for the familiar organic structure: Prior General, Provincial Priors, and Priors of in- dividual communities. At present the Augustinians throughout the world number 2350 pri6SfS, 700 clerics, and 400 brothers. The T957 staff of Mendel's yearbook takes pride in saluting the Order and the reli- gious who have dedicated themselves to the service of God and humanity. They form an integral part of our family at Mendel, we, the students and families who receive so much from them, feel that we are an intimate part of the Augustinian family. Father General, residing at Vatican City, Rome, directs the fortunes of the whole Augustinian Family. As leader ot the Augustinians in Germany, Father Eber- hard proved his administrative and spiritual leadership through difficult years. He served in the United States from i923 to l929 as professor and parish priest. He has earned recognition as an author and preacher. Under his capable guidance, the Order anticipates an era of notable achievement and spiritual advance. Falher Seary is spiritual father To The Augusfinian Family wifhin The Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel. Founder and first Prior and Recfor of Mendel, he has endeared himself to all associated with our school. We reioice that he has been called to the high of- fice of Provincial. We are honored Thar he has chosen Mendel as his official residence. We are confident fha? The Order will prosper under l'YlS aeniol lnrurlnr-rSl'1lD. 2 xl - Zww . Like the priests in the Order, they assume the obligations of the vows ot Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience but do not take on the duties of the priestly office and ministry. They serve in various capacities as Intirmarian lBrother Anthonyl, as Sacristan lBrother Thomasl, and generally assist in work of the Order. Those who are interested in the training of future Augustinians may assist in this worthy cause by enrolling mem- bers in the Seminary Guild. Membership entitles one to a share in the spiritual benefits of the Order. Proceeds from the Guild are used to educate tuture priests and brothers. .1 Y S: 4 af l 'lf'- i l'5ft',z'5':'w' ilaiz ifeu . .. - -, Val: .. - t- ' ' 'L-1: - it I- lyf f 19- fr' 1 i ,+' i . w ,kj we F ' T fi if -'fir A T T X , y T f i i M' its l.ll ll V i li l i ,7q:513'9il'i .lfflfii W'i1'fffffPl?!iA'l1i i?4 X ll, ::r.l:.-.J ' ,, if -3, ,' ' V -15 V V51 xtty I ff I 1 1 f V 15' A .-V., ' Wfyyijiiirittth E i i i l l The Family plot ofthe Order of St. Augustine will hold the mortal remains ot its priest and brother members. But the Augustinian Family will not end with the grave -it continues in eternity! Those now serving in this life will one day be called by Christ to join their brethren who have already answered the Master's summons: Well done, good i and taithtul servant, . .Come ye blessed of My Father. . The evening ot this life will passg its shadows will fade be- fore the glorious light ot Heaven! ln eternity, all the Au- gustinian Family will be one in Christ, sharing the Beatitic Vision with Mary and their Holy Father Saint Augustine. IN MEMORIAM When first we planned our book, this page was to be a contents page for the remaining features. Little did we realize that we would insert a memorial page commemorating the death of one from the Mendel family. God saw fit to call to his eternal reward one of our own faculty, a priest of the Augustinian family, Father Prior. What better place to engrave our testimonial and remembrance of this devoted priest than on this page alongside the picture of the Augustinian burial plot at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. ' May this memorial remind us, whenever we leaf through this book, to remember him in our prayers. Let his memory inspire us to pray for all our teachers, living and dead. May his memory lead us to pray that many Mendel- men will one day offer themselves to the service of God as successors to such as Father Prior. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. FATHER GERALD PRIOR, O.S.A. Father Cavanaugh, in succeeding Father Seary, is keenly aware of the hopes and plans which Mendel's founder had for our school. Furthermore, he brings to the office of rector those qualifications necessary to guide Mendel in its second phase of development. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts from Villanova University, Father Cavanaugh pursued further studies at the Gregorian University, Rome, and at Catholic University, Washington, D.C. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Education by Villanova and took graduate studies at Tulsa University. Father Cavanaugh taught at Villanova University, 1937, before his assignment to the Midwest Province on the faculty of Cascia Hall, Tulsa. He was appointed vice-rector at Cascia in 1940. From 1952 until his coming to Mendel, Father was vice-rector of St. Rita High, Chicago. 20 DEAN OF STUDIES Father Robert Verstynen, O.S.A. B.A. Villanova, MA. Catholic U. Guidance, Religion. She has been a part of the Mendel family since opening day. Our school will be indebted to her always. Librarian, Miss Oedzes Secretary to Rector, Mrs. Swallow Attendance Recorder, Mrs. Dunphy School and Student Records, Mrs. Grapenthin CFFICE STAFFS and LIBRARIAN mm! MAINTENANCE and CAFETERIA Above: Mr. Lindbloom and his cafeteria staff. Left: Mr. Vail and his two lads. The Vail family is a vital part of the Mendel picture. Little Connie, our iunior twirler, is the star. Mr. William Vail is our capable mainten- ance chief and engineer. He supervises the smooth-running work crews around school. Two men who form the nucleus of Mr. Vail's maintenance group, Mr. Joseph Braz- zo CLD, and Mr. Louis Boudreau KRD. CLASSES Appearing with Father Rector are the top ranking Mendelmen as of the first semester standings. Seniors John Donohue, Joseph Gaiewski and Jean Klawitter. Juniors: Robert Normant, Robert Frank and Robert Staib. Sophomores Ken Bacon, John Meier and Ronald Sciepko. Freshmen: Charles Scott, Jon Kapecki and William Keating. All of our 1440 students are graded according to the Honor Point system. Scholastic grades and student rank, along with many minute details indicating student achievement, are exactly computed by IBM calculations. The present curriculum of studies at Mendel has been designed in accordance with the high standards of Augustinian education and has the full approval of the State of Illinois and North Central Association. A boy who meets our standards and requisites for graduation is sufficiently qualified to enter any university or college. To meet the changing needs of students, Father Verstynen, Dean of Studies, is setting up an Honors Course for next year. This course will be aimed at challenging the more intellectually gifted boy. Father Verstynen's unique effort is prompted by the expressed desire of leading educators throughout the country to identify those students who give excep- tional promise in the fields of science and engineering. ln this way, Mendel Catholic will be serving the needs of our community and our country. A noble ideal of Catholic home life is beautifully portrayed in this picture of the Starr family. ln the sanctuary of the home, the family study circle functions under the gentle supervision of loving parents. Before a child becomes a member of a class, or is assigned a place in a classroom, or is graded for achievement, he has learned from devoted, self-sacrificing parents the value of study and discipline. Our parents have the great responsibility of being the child's first teachers. lt is their ingenious task to instruct each child in the rudiments of learning without discrimination or distinction, O Jesus, behold our Family prostrate before Thee. Once more do we consecrate our- selves to Theegour trials and our ioysethat our home, like Thine, may be the shrine of peace, purity, love, labor and faith. Do Thou protect and bless all of us, absent and present, living and dead. 31 CLASS Russ Abolt Nice-Pres.J Charles DeBenedetti CTreas.J FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS Charles Scott QPres.J Robert Peterson CSecy.l First Row: J. W ACTIVITIES The Coordinator of School Activities, Father John McNabb, O.S.A., is shown talking with Student Senate officers, Larry Peterson and James Dean. The Student Senate is the mainspring for all student functions at our school. Every club or organization, to be a vital part of school life, must receive its charter from the Senate. The Senate, which consists of representatives from every section, spearheacls all movements which will im- prove teacher-student relationships. lt seeks to advance the good of Mendelmen-on or off campus. The Monarch staff takes this opportunity to thank Father McNabb for his vigorous efforts in behalf of stu- dent and alumni activities. We feel that it is due in great part to his zeal that Mendel Catholic has so ably sat- isfied the varied extracurricular interests and desires of our fellow students and graduates. ah Group prayer and the evening meal are two social activities which contribute greatly to family unity and to vidual members, Many families, like the Regans, find that the supper table affords an appropriate setting for Babyhood is not too early an age for children, like little Kevin, to experience the joy of harmonious family acquired in infancy will last a lifetime. In spite of limited funds Father was able to equip and field teams in all sports. He secured the services of qualified Phys. Ed. in- structors and coaches of proven ability. IN MEMORIAM Thomas De Vries DIED MAY 2, 'I957 We place This memorial To Tom here in order that his classmates may recall his friendly, good and unassuming demeanor. Tom's was a very sudden passing, and we were all saddened. For the second time The finger of death came into our midst To beckon one of us To final iudgment. This sudden visitation reminds all of us To watch and pray. May Tom's death be a reminder To us To live better lives each day. LeT us make our own The ambition which was expressed by Tom in his biography as a freshman, I hope to become a maior league ball- player and after death To see God face to face. May his soul rest in peace. SENIOR WRITEUPS BARON, ROBERT 12242 EMERALD AVE. C285 AS- SUMPTION B.V,M. Honor Society 3, Intramurals 1,2, 3,4, Swimming 1,2. BASILE, DAVID 10845 S. WHIPPLE C435 ST. The statt wishes to express its deepest gratitude to Milton, our school photog- rapher, tor his many generous services in our behalf. Without him, this book would never have been a success. The statt recognizes only too well its lack ot professional ability, but what is lacking there is made up tor by our desire to give tellow stu- dents a bit ot history to carry with them.
