THE SANDSTORM Ameleen Fortu three NATIONAL DEFENSE ENAUL HAS TRIED to be of help to our governm nt along drfferent lrnes An extensrve program of sprrrtual physrcal and frnancral cooperatron wrth the Natronal Defense program has been carrred out A defense commrttee was appornted consrstrng of three faculty members and three students Thrs commrttee met at drfferent trmes to drscu s and decrde what plans were to be carrred out on the campus Thrs commrttee also took charge of a servrce held for the rarsrng of a new Amerrcan flag grven to lVlenaul by the Amerrcan Legron and planned the servrce held on Armrstrce Day to dedrcate the servrce flag Our greatest contrrbutron to our country has been our boys and grrls rn the armed forces We haye one hundred and seventy seven alumnr and former students rn the drfferent branches of the servrce rn the army the navy the arr corps and the marrnes Qur servrce flag has one hundred and twenty three blue stars for boys and grrl rn ervrce rn thrs country frftv three srlver stars for boys who have Gone overseas and one gold star for one boy krlled rn actron Some lVlenaul boys have teen deferred from seryrce to work on farms Physrcal educatron was requrred of all students throughout the school year All boys partrcrpated rn football basketball track tennrs or baseball and the grrls par trcrpated rn vollev ball basketball tennrs and softball Lnder the drrectron of the school nurse classes rn frrst ard were grven to the students Also under the drrectron of drfferent faculty members we organrzed a Vrctory Lorps wlrrch was made up of the followrnv drvrsrons Arr Servrce Sea Servrce Land Servrce Communrty Servrce Prodr.ctron Servrc and General Xrctory Corps Frnancrally contrrbutrons to Natronal Defense were made by members of the faculty and students through the purchase of defense bonds and stamps The students on the defense commrttee sold war stamps to the faculty and stud nts every Tuesday Over five hundred dollars rn d fense stamps were sold Scrap materral metal rubber and fat needed for war productron was collected under the drrectron of a f culty m mber Sprrrtually Menauls arm of preparrng every student for Chrrstran crtrzenshrp was more than ever the goal tow rd wh ch our efforts along thrs lrne were drrected Thus rt rs our hope to prepare our students not only for purposes of war but for the re ponsrbrlrtres of peace after the wer rs over v V' :jg 1 Y . , . . . THE SANDSTORM Nineteen Forty three MUSIC USIC plays a very rmportant part at Menaul The muslc department consrsts of the following groups the school chonr sophomore gurls chorr sophomore boys chorr Junror boys quartet semor grrls sextet Junior gurls sextet and orchestra These groups practice once a week Ten students take prano lessons Every sprrng there rs a concert grven by thrs department For the past two years the gnls have worn CXCUIHQ gowns and the boys have wom whlte shirts and dark trousers The concert this year was grven the seventeenth of April Some of the songs which were sung at the concert thus year were The Army Arr Corps Song Thr ls Worth Frghtmg For I Hear America Sxngrng This year the gurls wore black skirts and red 1ackets rnstead of evemng gowns The boys also wore red sweaters and black trousers and sport shrrts thus representing our school colors Vvheneyer possrble specrals are prepared by members of the muslc department to be sung at chapel services at places where the Gospel Team goes or at some church Jn town Many trmes quartets are asked to sung at the Spanish Church Gospel choruses are taught rn Sunday school by quartets or other groups which belong to the muslc department The sophomore cholr sang ln the Christmas play The WBYIOUS musrc groups sang for the Christmas program The senior glrls sextet sang a special for the Easter sun rrse service The Junior grrls sextet and junior boys quartet presented the Good Friday servrce The chool chorr and mrxed quartet sang specral numbers for the Easter evemng servxce The church chorr has sung for every church service once a month lVIus1c rs rndeed a wonderful thrng especially durmg war time because rt helps to keep up the morale of all of us and also makes our boys who are far from home feel that we are for them rn all they do Some of our Menaul boys who are rn the armed servrces request our smgmg some special hymns at our song servrces Sunday nrghts after vrsrtmg hour DRAMATICS NE OF THE BEST entertarnments here at Menaul rs the grvrng of plays Admlssron IS charged for the senror and Junlor plays The sophomore and dramatrc club plays are free and provrde entertarnment for the whole student body The hrst play given thrs year was the JUDIOY play Mr Cook Takes Over The second play was grven by the sophomores Letly s Christmas Prodigal The speak mg cast was asslsted by the sophomore chorus We found out that the faculty has much dramatrc abrlrty There were roars of laughter when they presented Surlalrle for Charrty Everybody was especially impressed with Mr Donaldson s actrng A comedy play was also presented later by the ladles of the faculty Thus was entitled Have You Had Your Operalron3 The two dramatic club plays Vuley and A Cerlam us!
