THE SANDSTORM Nmeteen Forty-three THE SCHOOL YEJXR l94Z I943 AT ALLISON jAME.S SCHOOL HIS YEAR THE SCHOOL has attempted to dovetail its program with the war effort in every way possible The school store has conducted several campaigns for war stamp selling among the children with the result that to date more than SIOO worth of these stamps have been sold The school has also par ticipated in the fat savings campaign by sending out government published leaflets to the families of the children represented on the campus and also by saving as much fat as possible on the campus itself More than a ton of scrap iron has been picked up around the campus while the tm cans coming from the school krtchen have been turned over to the bottling works in Santa Fe for making of caps for bottles Persistently throughout the year the student council has been working together with the staff in the Save Serve and Conserve Program which the Federal Government has set up for schools and evidently the successful working of this program is indicated by the fact that equipment is being better treated and there is less breakage about the campus than and cultivating of a School Victory Garden which consists of nearly 20000 square feet of excellent soil We hope to raise a large enough root crop off of this plot to provide us with root vegetables for a large portion of this coming school year Several adjustments have been necessary owing to the war effort this year with only three men on the staff instead of the usual six the other three being replaced by women It is gratifying to note that the program is continuing just as efficiently and perhaps even more so than in the past in spite of the disproportionate percentage of men to women on the staff This year there has been a total enrollment of 107 of which 94 are on the roll at the writing of this report These figures compare favorably with figures of the past Approximately 40 different communities in northeastern New Mexico and southern Colorado are represented rn this enrollment and the largest percentage of church members is made up of Catholics while second largest is made up of Pres byterian During the week of Inspirational services held in March under the guidance of the Rev ulian Duran of Chimayo a number of students took a dehmte stand for Christ for the first time while the great majority of the student body were strengthened in their faiths which they had already professed prior to these services Throughout the year this year the staff has been particularly on the lookout for opportunities to improve the program at the school The hope of the school staff is to bring the educational program down to the level of the needs of the children who enroll at Allison James School rather than constantly to force the children into an educa tional program which in no way meets their particular needs usual. At the present time, the entire school family is concentrating on the laying out Page Twenty three
