THE SANDSTORM 1941 lil' FOOTBALL The athletrc program here at 'Vlenaul wouldnt be complete wrthout good old football As usual Coach Hernandez had to burld up an eleven from rnexperrenced materral wrth only one regular and fue lettermen from the prevrous eason The Panthers had a successful season defeating four opponents losrng only two games and tymg three The Panthers showed a frghtrng sprrrt and good sportsmanshrp whrch rs greatly emphasrzed by Coach Hernandez Much credrt goes to our beloved coach who annually has the task of burld ng up a team to face the state s outstandrng teams The El Rrto Eagles were Menauls first opponents and after a hard fought battle the decrsron was a scoreless tre Then rn the frrst home game the Belen Eagles fell before the Menaulmen I3 to 6 The Fort Wrngate Bears were consrdered state trtle contenders untrl after a strff game they were defeated by the Panthers 8 to 0 The first defeat of the season was handed to the Panthers by our crty rrvals the Albu querque Bulldogs the score berng 380 The St Marys Cougars our second mter crty rrvals were checked by the Panthers wrth a core of 6 to 6 Coming back rnto form the Panthers proved superror to another of our nerghbor rrvals the Albuquerque lndrans and as a result they fell vrctrm by a score of 6 to 0 The second and last defeat of the season came at the hands of the Las Vegas Cardrnals who won an excrtrng game 25 to I3 After they returned from Las Vegas the 'Vlenaul grrdsters took the road agarn and gave the C-rants Pirates a 27 to IZ beatrng Our home boys concluded therr season rn another upstate tour agarnst the Taos Trgers A snow covered scoreless tre The Panthers pas mg attack was hrghly prarsed throughout the season ack Brandenburg dead eye and long range passer heaved them to the ends Players who placed on the all crty first team were the followrng Crrl Mrranda end Laudente Montoya tackle Fred Cruz half back ack Brandenburg quarter back Grlbert Chavez Ruben latoya Koger Velasquez and Roger Candelarra recerved all crty honorable mentron ack Brandenburg recerved honorable m ntron both ln the all drstrrct and state team whrle Cul Mrranda was placed on the all drstrrct eleven Those of the squad who wrll not return because of graduation are Ruben Tafoya Grl Mrranda ends Laudente Montoya Brll Henderson tackles oe Romero Grlbert Chavez guards ack Brandenburg Felrberto Sanchez Fred Cruz Elllama Atencro Pula Roybal backs Paul Montano our manager wrll be mrssed greatly because he too wrll graduate BASKET BALL Basketball rs a very popular sport and one of the lcadrng sports at Menaul For the last few years the Panthers have been handrcapped by therr srze but through hard frghtrng and cooperatron the mrdgets as they have been called on the sport columns have managed to make a name for Menaul rn state basketball competrtron The record of the Panthers for the past season was qurte satrsfactory Coopera tron on the part of the team and hard work on the part of Coach Hernandez enabled the Panthers to wrn twelve out of twenty games The Panthers defeated some of the drstrrct s strongest teams rncludrng the Albuquerque Indrans Lourdes and Belen The Panthers handed the Taos Trgers one of therr two defeats of the season Menaul defeated the Santa Fe lndran Braves one of the strongest up state teams 38 Zl In F 'TT 'W M T 'T ' TTT -'4MTi gm ,mmf 'lf-Q 'aa' f' - I '.
