E S A N D S NAHTONAL DEFENSE There are several Vlenaul graduates who are now rn the army nawy and an corps ln the nan we hare oe GITOD Harvey C-lbson Estewan Sandoval and Daxrd Sandoval from the clas of 1940 lrmmre Prrce and Roy Price both graduates of 1939 also Robert Smith and Ed Archuleta of earller classes are rn the navy In the army there are Gilbert Abeyta Gilbert Chacon Modesto Gonzales Enos Sena and Sam Lopez all from the class of 1940 Albrno Lopez who graduated from lVlenaul rn 1939 rs also ln the army Lours Donaldson our superrntendents son who graduated from the University of New Mexico rn 1940 and was teachrng at Farm School Swannonoa North Carolrna was called to the army Other lVlenaul graduates rn this branch of the servrce are Augustrn Erchwald Saul Martmez Leo Lucero Ernest Wheaton Ernest Rodrrguez and Bert Sandoval Harry Sandoval acob Pacheco Ulysses Garcra and uan Pacheco have Jorned the arr corps Alonzo lVlcCool another graduate IS now at March Freld Calrfornra He IS m the 19th bombing squadron and expects to be sent to Albuquerque this sprmg Some of these boy have vrsrted Menaul several trmes during the school year They seem to be enjoying camp lrfe and feel that they are getting valuable tramrng rn the Natronal Defense program CAMPUSIMPROVEMENTS During the past two years the lVlenaul campus has been beautrfled rn many ways The space between the driveways at the entrance has been more fully rmprowed wrth Howers and trees Also other flower gardens haxe been planted on the campus The piece of ground between Teachers Hall and the superintendents cottage rs now occupred by the Helen Porter Childs Nlemorral a burldrng which was recently constructed The central part of this bulldlng rs occupred by a large lrght hvrng room whlch will be used by the home economics department ln the north wmg rs the krtchen wrth three complete unlts a model bedroom a laundry and storage space The south wing contams a well equrpped cllnlc room a classroom for health and home nursrng classes and examrnatron room Both the floor and the celhng of the gymnasium have been remodeled The floor was sanded and warnrshed and the roof was reparred so rt wont leak and the cerllng was put rn to sate heat and lrght The space whrch he west of the gymnasrum has been plowed and alfalfa or corn wrll be planted there The boys are starting to dlg an rrrlgatron dltch toward thr held Last fall some of the boys under the superxrslon of Miss Hart and lVlr Pre cott constructed an outdoor hreplace and rmprowed the prcmc grounds east of the orchard 1 1 I L J I U V ' - u v V I v I l - Q . . . . u v - V I V v I . n D - A . THE SANDSTORM MENAULSCHOOLFARM The 'Vlenaul School farm con rsts of 760 acres 33 of y hrch are under cultr vatron rn alfalfa Menaul al o has a garden rn whrch are rarsed tomatoes cucumbers watermelons cantaloupes lettuce radrshes and a few other vegetable These are used to supply some of the food for the drnlng room The forage crop alfalfa rs used to feed the cow and horses durrng the wrnter months Last year we trred an experrment of rarsrng sugar beets to feed to the cows We found that the sugar beets greatly rncreased then mrlk productron There are three wells whrch supply l 700 gallons of water per mrnute Thrs water rs used for drrnkrng purposes other household purposes and for rrrrgatron Part of the crops are rrrrgated from the conserxancy drtch The school owns fourteen head of cows whrclr supply 8000 gallons of mrlk per year for the use of the school Menaul also has a drove of hogs whrch supply some meat for the school I years past we have sold all the hogs but thrs year we sold only part of them The remarnder we butchered for our own use Turkeys are very popular at lVlenaul especrally durrng the Thanksgrvmg season Even though they are a lot of trouble to rarse they pay for themselves Fourteen turkeys were used for Thanksgrvrng drnner at lVlenaul and the remarnder were sold to people rn Albuquerque and to a hosprtal at Thanksgrvrng trme The turkeys help to keep down the grasshoppers durrng the summer We have four horses whrch are used for work around the farm Some of the boys who do not pay for all then board 'rnd room work on the farm mrlkrng Cows and dorng the other farm work CLUBS Seyeral clubs were organrzed tlrrs year and each student was asked to Jorn one These clubs are Knrttrng and Fancy Work sponsored by lVlrss Bender Publrc Speaking and Debate sponsored by 'Vlrss Barber Archery sponsored by lVlr Bauer Dramatrc sponsored by Mrss Gerow lnternatronal Relatrons sponsored by lVlr Hernandez and Future Farmers of Amerrca sponsored by Mr Prescott Clubs haye been yery rnterestrng and the students hare actryely partrcrpated The Dramatic Club gaxe three hort plays and each play was judged on characterr zatron pronuncratron and actron The Publrc Speakrng and Debate Club entertarned the Dramatrc Club wrth a debate program Other club haye rlso had rnterestrng programs wirwf TTYA TTT' Y UTVTT -TT-T-A TWT , ,,-,, -,-,-,,e,,A..-.- . , . . r s .. -, v - r - T 5 ' ' - -. r - , . .Q . , , . v ' V I V D .
