L' 'ra pt' Y'11't'rrty--.six THE SANDSTORM DRAMATICS One of the many new clubs formed at Menaul this year was the dramatic Club This club s program called not only for plays and acting but also for instruction in malce up stage setting and any number of things it takes to malce up a good play In all there were eight plays given this year The juniors began the season with the presentation of Clearing Skies on Novmber 2 The sophomore talent was shown in two one act plays at Christmas time Children of the Inn and A Painting for the Duchess sented by the members of the Dramatic Club The audience was much amused by the comical play Of All Things and then suddenly quleted by the battling production Murder on the High Seas Both of these plays were given on February 24 The third of this series The Howl of the Wolf was given February 26 The next production was a Spanish play La Careta Verde was presented by Mr Eli Martinez Spanish III class on April 5 The senior play Hot Water Henry was the grand finale and wound up a great season on May Z3 We feel that we had a great year in dramatics and hope that the Menaul Dramatic Club will carry on for years to come MUSIC The music department has made much progress this year under the direction of Miss Gertrude Barnes Musical activities include a sophomore mixed chorus a junior mixed chorus Junior boys quartet senior girls quartet and senior boys quartet and a school quartet Instruction is given in piano and voice The total enrollment of the music department is sixty four with seventeen piano students and two voice students The music and Bible Departments presented an original Thanksgiving program The libretto was written by Miss Marlon Dutton At Christmas time the music department collaborated with the English depart- ment in presenting two one-act plays with a chorus singing carols of different lands. The music department of Allison- ames under the direction of Mr. Ciraham Hopper gave a joint program with the Menaul music department one evening i March. Songs were presented by the various vocal groups with the assistance of the Menaul orchestra. The piano students gave a musical tea on March 29. This is an annual recital. The hrst part of the program was given by the Junior Mozart Club composed of ten members. This is made up of children who are taking private lessons. The activities of the club include opera stories songs piano selections and poetry. Hail! King of Clory, an Easter cantata was given by the music and Bible De- partments. This Easter story depicts dramatic and sorrowful moments as well as the triumphant resurrection. Menaul School has joined the State Federation of Music Clubs. N . x' 's s 'fl . , 1 J C THE SANDSTORM 1941 IVIENAUL GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION IVIGAA stands for health building and character building as well as for high standards in athletics Volleyball basketball tennis baseball track and tumbling are the main events of the year although archery has come to be quite popular among the girls too Any girl is pledged to the IVIGAA if she has earned twenty five points or more athletics a girl may earn ISO points for a block numeral or 350 points for a letter The constitution of the association provides for officers who assist our instructor lVllss Polly Pacheco a former IVIGAA member now attending the University of New Mexico TENNIS Tennis has been one of the chief sports at IVIenaul for the last two years Players have found that tennis is no softies game Tennis is coached by lVlr Wadlergh Last year both boys and girls entered the state tournament and the girls vvon third place for the school Prospects are fair for this year There is much interest being taken in tennis and many students have gone out for this sport We feel that if we improve we may be able to gam even a higher place in the tournament This year we have had no inter school tournament activities because of the weather but we hope to have later The tennis courts have been improved and we know that this helps very much We hope to have more good prospects in the years to come for our good old alma mater We hope that the students who go out for this tlmlling game vvill keep it up so that IVIenaul may have a place in more activities Page Forty eight for participating in any class team or in any tournament.
