S1 isTLrse-'visawliel ii 'r4i255LQlQfQg- C MENAUL SCHOOL FARM HE Menaul School Farm consists of two hundred sixty acres, of which one hundred are under cultivation. During the summer eight or nine boys stay to do the work on the farm. They help raise the different kinds of vegetables and fruit, and care for the stock. The farm furnishes some food for the school. It produces much of the feed for the stock with the exception of the grain. The hay tonnage has been decreasing slightly the past few years, probably because of the exhaustion of the soil which needs to undergo the rotation process. In the past years as many as I50 tons of alfalfa have been harvested. This past year approximately l25 tons were produced. Un the campus there are two pumps which produce approximately 700 gallons of water per minute. Willa the water from these pumps about fifty acres are irrigated. Another source from which w'e get our water for irrigation purposes is the conservancy ditch. Witlm this water about 36 acres are irrigated. Menaul has some very good Holstein cows. Last year they produced 71 650 pounds of milk an average of 8930 pounds per cow which is an adequate supply for the school. The past two years a nice drove of swine has been raised These are being sold at top market prices A few years ago the hogs were butchered here but now there seems to be more profit rn raising them and selling them at market price Until last year chickens were raised to supply eggs for the school but this year we did away with our chickens Nevertheless turkeys are raised The turkeys are rn Great demand during the Thanksgiving season Considering the cost of feed and labor which rs spent on the turkeys an aierage of about l 00 per turkey is cleared On the farm there are also two teams of horses which play an important part rn the work of the farm CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS URING the past two years the Menaul campus has been beautrfied rn many ways The old garages which were near the football field were removed and new tile and adobe ones were constructed between Teachers Hall and the Twin Cottages The piece of ground between Pierson Hall and Old Brick was made into a park Grass was planted and many trees were transplanted Un the north side of the park a stage was built where out of door programs may be given All of the adobe or sun dried bricks were made by the boys and most of the work rn the park also was done by them Field that had been abandoned rn the past because their uneveness made rrrrgatrng drffi cult and so made them unfit for planting have been leieled this spring and they will be planted X rth alfalfa and sugar beets This spring Coach Hernandez decided to improve the appearance of the athletic field Hedge and trees were transplanted all around the foo'ball field and track The space between the driveways at the entrance has been leveled and planted with grass and flowers to form a small park Flower Gardens also have been planted rn many parts of the campus V. 1 A ' ' . 4 .
