BASKETBALL STANDING: Managers Phil Patterson and Charles Crump, Coach Gene Thorn, Duke Montgomery, Frank Smith, Stan Hutter, Jim Haygood, Lanny Butler, George Early, Tom Keesee, Horace Hull, Syd Butler, and Dave Boone. The basketball team of M. U. S. had a very favorable season, gaining momentum at the season ' s end and a high regard from the other teams. Highly favored Messick and Hollywood fell to the Owls in the latter stages of the campaign, along with Bellevue. Second-place Humes and mighty South Side both edged M.U.S. , but not until a long, hard struggle was completed. In the tournament, we again drew Humes. The scrappy M.U.S. quintet persistently held the mar- gin down. Finally with 15 secondsremaining, Haygood sank four consecutive free throws to knot the score at 41-41. Two overtime periods followed, netting a 43-43 tie, Haygood again firing the important basket. In a sudden death playoff, a free throw gave the Baby Tigers the victory. For his 20 point effort in this game, Jim Haygood was selected on the all -tournament team. Further recognition came to the eighth grade Captain when he was selected for the second team All-Memphis five. It is with confidence that we look forward into the future. 27
